I took a test drive of the River's Indie last week! Here are some takeaways: Firstly, the looks. Yes, it seems bulky, but not as much as it appears in the pictures. It's quite common for Indians to normalize the big appeal and road presence of their bulky vehicles. The styling is unique-not too sharp or dull. The proportions are simple and right to the limit, with a slight touch of modern design elements in lighting and flush fits. Overall, looks-wise, it does turn heads when you're on the road, similar to how the Ather attracts attention with its unique sound. Then comes the performance. The torque and power mapping are very precise, connecting the rider to the road very well, thanks to its intelligent throttle mapping and seamless belt drive technology with bigger rims. The rush mode can easily make the rear wheel spin if not properly vectored, and the acceleration is impressive for such a bulky machine. There's not much difference between Eco and normal modes, except that the initial pickup is capped a bit, and the throttle feels laggy after 40 km/h. The brakes are good enough but not the best when compared to the Ather, possibly due to its complex combi-brake tech coupled with the regen mapping, which needs a bit of improvement. Comfort! Yes, it does offer superior ride comfort, thanks to its soft suspension setup, the bigger seat, and the ergonomics/frame, making it highly practical for both young and elderly people. However, when loaded with a pillion rider, there is a bit of compromise with the rear suspension. Handling is easy to navigate through traffic, with a very agile and responsive handle. It does feel heavy with a pillion rider, possibly due to the bigger rims in the front, but it's manageable. The cluster is very simple and provides important information which is relevant to the rider. It’s not as fancy and smart as the Ather’s, which might depend on user expectations. However, I think the cluster is one of the main reasons for Ather’s higher price tag, while the Indie offers a cheap and simple solution for its practical point of view. Overall, it’s a good product with unique and practical USPs for the Indian market, which can put it on the map. Given that EVs are always only as good as their battery, it’s notable that Ather and River share similar battery pack architectures in terms of cell form factors, battery pack location, packaging method, thermal management (PCM-based), and enclosure design. However, the only measurable qualitative difference is how intelligent the BMS is, which defines the lifecycle and safety level of the battery pack. Indie offers a broader range of features and covers most utility requirements of a typical Indian mindset, catering to a much larger pool of customers compared to the Ather 450X. The only way Indie can sustain the competition is by offering competitive pricing (which it is currently, possibly as an introductory price) and building its service hubs and charging infrastructure, which is of high importance considering current market trends.
@@bravo6177 everything is good except availability. People are tired. Most are going with Rizta now. River has lost their definitive edge over ather because 450X is no longer the main competitor. Rizta may not be as good as Indie, but only the top variant of Rizta is competing with Indie. The base model starts at 1.1L.

Personally i think the Indie is well rounded package... With performance, power and bulk...the only problem is that their service network isn't effectively up and running and they haven't yet expanded to many cities...while Ather has been the master at making the 450 range fun along with the charging infrastructure...i would love to have the Indie...i am not a fan of connected features so the Indie definitely for me 👍👍
Why do you not even consider Hero Vida as an alternative, when you mention other ev scooters towards the end of video? Is it that bad, I was considering due to the discounts they are offering. Suggestions?
Because we don't have media units from Hero. The only time we rode it was last year and faced software issues. Hero worked on those issues but never got back with a media unit.
I don’t know who needs this much space which indie has to use as a daily driver. 450x has enough space and it’s master in ride quality in throttle calibration, road stability, and warp mode is just 💀.
I mean indie really looks like cargo scooter the first time i saw that scooter didn't knew the brand but thought this is some kind of cargo line of some brand
Until eclectic technology can achieve at the very least 250 to 300km on single tank/charge, with kerb weight below 140kg. They are just fancy toys. Plus there is hours of waiting/down period for single charge, And no charging infra. This century is probably not electric.
@@powerdriftofficial I'm not trying to be a di.., But government already forced 100cc to have fuel pumps, fuel injection, BS6 emissions choking, unnecessary electronic... @@Leon-vp3vb Calm down. It will not take a century. The growth/adoption will compound, it can seem slow in the beginning but after 3-5 years EVs will be everywhere. Why are you so worried about 300 km range & other technicals? These are built for a specific mass user group who will mostly use for local/city use, daily errands like office/business commutes & grocery visits etc. They are not auto-enthusiasts, racers or travelers, and do not care about high power, top speed, fast cruising, vibrations etc. I have seen even village relatives eagerly waiting to grab one, once prices become more affordable, the richer ones are already using across cities, towns & villages. They will be cheaper after the initial investment, and as production, adoption & charging infra scale up. Battery tech will slowly but surely evolve. I assume this is one of those technologies which once proven and reached a critical mass/scale, there is absolutely no going back. At max 10 years to reach majority % of units on the road.
Had River adopted the Ather charging standard, they would have had a massive leg up on the fast/public charging on the Ather Grid network from the start. This incompatibility of fast charging standard among the 2W EV makers seems short sighted.
