I’m Filipino and I have family in Hawaii. I always get asked if I’m local cause I’m big and dark lol. A local out there was saying it’s hard to find true Hawaiians since Filipinos and Japanese have lived in the area so long and adopted the culture.
The tiers, at least in Oahu. I'm not sure about everywhere else: Tier 1. Native Hawaiian. Most are mixed with something else, but having Native Hawaiian blood makes you top tier. If you're mixed with Hawaiian, then your other ethnic group doesn't really matter. Tier 2. Other Polynesians (Samoans, Tongans). Local Filipinos (Ilocanos). They usually live in the hood areas like Kalihi and Waipahu. Being brown helps these groups. Tier 3. Local Japanese. They're like the white people of Hawaii. They're the wealthiest ethnic group, but Hawaiians still view them as locals because they mostly live humbly. Hapas- if you're mixed with Hawaiian, then you're tier 1. If you're Asian and white mixed, then you're in this tier (3) Portuguese- spicy white. Been in Hawaii for many generations. Seen as locals. A lot of them are mixed with Native Hawaiian, so they go up to tier 1 if they are Other Local Asians- Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese, etc. Tier 4. Micronesians and new Filipino immigrants (mostly Tagalog & Visayans). They're mostly poor. Locals aren't fond of them because they seem to be taking over, but they're still seen as better than whites. Other new Asian immigrants- Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese, etc. Tier 5. Local whites besides Portuguese. Tier 6. Japanese tourists. They're the most loved tourists but you'll find some locals who don't like them. Tier 7. White tourists. Not loved at all
What is the feeling toward Black and South American people in Hawaii? I have never really heard anyone speak on that and I’ve long wondered as someone who would like to visit someday and am not a member of any of these aforementioned groups haha
It's a level thing Native Hawaiians who have more then half of Hawaiian blood in the bloodline is native but the bloodline has to go way back to like the 1700s or something your ancestors come from Hawaii. Hawaiian is kind of a term for someone born and raised in Hawaii with less then half Hawaiian blood diluted bloodline. Kama'aina someone who's from Hawaii but they're whatever ethnicity (i.e. Japanese boy born and raised in Hawaii) Haóle which means No Breath coined by Hawaiians originally about the missionaries who landed in Hawaii (Captain Cook times) but over time it has become more focused on meaning white people. (Each race has nicknames for people from Hawaii) All in all I think we're pretty welcoming just don't come to Hawaii with the mentality that you can do whatevers because there's alot of cultural places here with history that still mean something to us. If people see those places getting disrespected or our animals (i.e. Turtles, Monk Seals, Dolphins) Locals get pretty nuts. 🤣
Haole always meant "foreign" in 'olelo Hawai'i. It is a very old word that already existed in Kumulipo. It does not mean "no breath", that is a popular belief but its not true. Hā is loaded with a lot of connotations. It's like the life or mana of the land. Putting the word into context, the word implies that the thing in question is not of the land.
What I was taught is pidgin came from the Asian locals that was working the rice fields. They used pidgin as a “shortened” language since they were under watch and wasn’t allowed to talk. “Haole” means no breath, basically it means you have no breath of life or ha. And yea pidgin comes and goes, we live vegas and only use pidgin at home or when talking to our friends and family because even if it’s English per se we are still not understood when talking to someone lol.
The tourism industry makes Hawai'i so desirable and makes mainlanders and foreigners want to move here. Thats one of the major reasons cost of living is so high: desirable by HAOLES.
I went last year. An elder I was talking to was worried about us Asians in the mainland being attacked for Covid. Told her I'm more worried about the elders being attacked for it. Cause they don't target someone that fights back
Mahu is the best alcoholic drink ever! but you can only get it here. you gotta ask for it with “the hammah boto” tho, that stuff is POTENT! I’m hawaiian/Filipino 🙌🏽🤙
I do the same thing when I go back to China. I don’t speak in an American accent Cantonese. I start speaking China Cantonese/the dialect from my mom’s home town. It just comes naturally, not forced
I think Pidgin is just a mix of a bunch of languages used to communicate with people that don't speak the same language. Cause there's a bunch of pidgin languages around the world
5th gen here in Hawaii, actually the Hawaiians were hit hard because they chose not to be vaccinated. They are the highest non vaccinated percentage of people in the state, even though the monarchy was very pro vaccination after they were decimated years ago from foreign diseases.
5th generation here, the hawaiians bred with everyone. Its the culture. Everyone got fckd by the colonizer diseases. Its why they were able to fck the hawaiians up and its also the reason for "kill haole day". Theyre immunities are mixed.
Moke (Hawaiian male) or Tita (Hawaiian female) : a local person that isn't afraid to get into fights. Kanak Attatcks: Food Coma; after you ate a plate lunch (from L&L Drive Inn or Zippy's)... you just want to fall asleep on the bed or crash on the couch. Make (Mah-Kay) Die Dead: to Die
I'm British, but my slang changes depending on who I'm talking to. If I'm interacting w/ my American friends, it's more American slang. But my boyfriend would tell me when I go to London to visit my friends and I come back to my home town, I sound posher, I never noticed it but apparently I do 😂
Portos Bakery. Downey California. I have all my Hawaiian, Japanese , korean, Chinese , porteges , Samoan brothers and my Black brothers. Mexicano Beverley hills. Frank Martinez Downey California ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
1970 growing up in Downey California my neighbors would call me Hawaiian. As a kid I loved surfing and still surfing. Remember people asking if I am Hawaiian. I would say, No i am Mexicano and the white guys would ignore me. I don’t care, still surfing. Downey California ❤❤❤
He said he’s from San Diego so it makes sense he talks like he’s from the plastic side of Los Angeles. Even if he spoke well, you would still be able to hear the intonation. To claim Hawaii, you have to be born and raised in Hawaii. These are the facts.
Think of Hawaii that is 10yrs behind todays modern economy. We don't want any over developements and sudden increase of population. CA for example and now longtime Californians are moving out due to taxes, population and income and all sorts.
L&L in California is part owners by kardashians 🥴 but I have to agree with Joe. Vegas have really good lunch plates hawaii. What’s a plus is plates are large portion 😋
🤣🤣🤣it's used as a derogatory term now. It really means no breath. "Ha = breath of life and "ole" none or absence of. It was given to the white sailors who were mistaken as gods or ghosts in ancient hawaii.🤣🤣🤣 and yes, now it's used like the "karen" term or also like saying dumba**🤣🤣🤣
Growing up in Gardena California my Hawaiian brothers. Bobs Hawaii and Gardena Bowl David was a kid remember seeing that fool. My Hawaiian brothers told me story of the island the Japanese, Chinese, korrean, philipino phlipino phlipino and protégés I remember talking about white boys giving me hard time, they said, Hawaiia was worst. You have no idea. Racism in Hawaii Rowland non - white was worst. You were not allowed.. holies Downey California ❤❤
In Alaska, the native word for white person. A direct translation to white man is Gus-uk normally is not a mean things. It's just a quick secrecy way to excuse your Gus-uk friend like 'they don't know any better'
Oh wait. It can be mean. Like this person doesn't know Jack shit about anything. We also say things like "they're funny" but it means they're slow, or it's hard for them to comprehend things. So it's not a complement if a native grandma calls you funny. (it's not really used by city natives)
I'm a big dark Cambodia foo. I get mixed up with so kinds of mofos. I was sitting outside home Depot smoking a cig and had a dude roll up and asked if I do tile and shit 😂
hello jknews, steven segal is being mentioned because he was accidental gunman suddenly on the crow movie. drinking beer for hawaii is not natural but pina colada and margherita. the sick is probably seasick on a boat canoe or ship. the french connection united kingdom word on and on is it from the chip on shoulder and the hawke on their heads. the coral does need sea water to be soft and keep planktons for fishies to find food. the silver on his fingers are nice and the pandora pieces are dangles. elle for spam is comments in our email box
There's also tiers of the "real" Hawaiians and locals. The cities where most of the hotels are and restaurants are. Are mainly " white Hawaiians" there real Hawaiians just not the true representation of Hawaiians. There mostly nicer, more calm, and look more touristy and talk more proper. Once you start going to the Westside or the north shore side. Then you'll meet the "REAL" Hawaiians. All the Tongan Hawaiians, samaoan Hawaiians, your typical , 6, 3 280 lb local braddah. The most nicest people you'll ever meet in your life, but absolutely no tolerance of disrespect. That's where you'll here them start talking a little funny. (PIDGIN) but us locals always welcome the tourist but just show aloha and everybody show aloha back. Cheehee also if you want a quick look at what a real Hawaiian acts look up tumua, he's a local comedian. And also haole is not a bad word lol open to any questions that went unanswered.
I’m Filipino and I have family in Hawaii. I always get asked if I’m local cause I’m big and dark lol. A local out there was saying it’s hard to find true Hawaiians since Filipinos and Japanese have lived in the area so long and adopted the culture.
So are you blaming your Filipino side for faqing that up
Big? You mean under 6 ft?
Same with me, I'm a 6'2 filipino and I also have big ear spacers.
There’s a difference between a local and a Native.
@@isthisquynhnhi right. A native has a Hawaiian bloodline. A local is born and raised.

For cooking pig for luaus, they do cook a pig in the ground but they don’t serve that pig to the guest. They have one made prior to the luau.
Bart is actually hilarious 😂

This would’ve been a good teaching moment to tell them it’s “moo-soo-bee” and NOT “ma-soo-bee.” Automatic tell if they’re local or tourist.

Hurry up we wanna know about Luna. Should be first priority.
I think that Ainoko was meant to be "あいのこ(the middle)" rather than "愛の子(a child of love)" concidering the intonation.
Rip terra
