The British had no intention to keep HK or they would have granted the people of HK British citizenship.

@@tftfgubedgukm7911IMHO reading with the advantage of historical hindsight I think Margaret Thatcher was caught off guard when she effectively gave away all rights or thoughts of saving the people of The Crown Colony to get the new Hong Kong airport built. Again my opinion Beijing was never going to let Hong Kong continue as a thorn in its side.

Love is a many splendored thing: Lovely and intense as Han Suyin, Jennifer Jones garnered an Oscar nomination. Her dark beauty reflected sunshine and sadness in this tear-jerker! Both William Holden and Jennifer Jones were pitch perfect in their comprehensively defined roles. As Han Suyin, she essayed the role [of the nurse] exuding power while maintaining a sense of seamless coolness. The enormity of her skill is electrifying to watch. Grey shades have dimensions and layers necessary for a character to shine. Her character is reluctant, a brooder, strong, and yet, shy and reticent. Ms. Jones had an ability to handle abstract concepts and find ways to articulate them in a manner that other could understand. This gave her an edge over others. The theme of Love is a many tells one that "you have to leave behind all that you have lost, to embrace what you have left". There is beautiful interplay of emotions and dialogue between the protagonists. The film is poignant and an emotionally-charged watch. You will never forget "Love is a many splendored thing" as a movie and the theme song will haunt you now and forever. A true classic!!!

I spent my teen years in this then British HongKong from 1957 to , until I got drafted by the U S draft board ( # 47 -Wisconsin ) in 1969. William Holden was super famous over there during that era . Every one in this movie performed excellently , including in the movie of Suzy Wong's World .

@@helenaville5939 not really, there were plenty of wealthy Chinese and Indians. Most of the servants were grateful for the work as they may have fled from the terrible communist civil war and revolution. Some will have used their earnings to help them further on their way to emigrate to countries like the USA. Life is not as simple as black and white. It is far richer and this film and book tries to discuss these themes.

    🌠CELESTIALI🌠
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND PASSIONATE ORCHESTRATION OF THE OPENING OF A FILM MUSIC SCORE THAT I HAVE EVER HEARD. WHEN THE VIOLINS REACHED THE APEX OF THE GLORIOUS
MELODIC PHRASE AT .36 SECONDS, IT REMINDED ME OF THE LINE WRITTEN
BY EDWIN MARKHAM: ..."What the long reaches of the PEAKS OF SONG, the rift of dawn, the reddening of the
rose." The treatment of the theme
    was PURE RACHMANINOFF!
The composer and orchestrator of the
film score, Alfred Newman, was of Russian heritage himself. His father was born Mikhail Nemorofsky and his
    mother was born Luba Koskoff.
The actress playing the role of a gadabout was fantastic in this part!
She "stole the scene," as they say in the film industry.

In real life, Bill Holden fell in love with Hong Kong when he first visited the city during a Korean War USO tour. He owned an apartment there and visited the city many times. In a 1970`s interview when asked what were some of his favorite cites, he replied "Hong Kong, in the years following WW2.

I've been familiar with the beautiful theme song for decades - almost ever since I first learnt to listen to music. But it was not until about a year ago when I realised that the film was actually produced in my hometown Hong Kong !
It's not quite the romance that brings tears. It's the scenes of the bygone yesteryear that stirs up such profound nostalgia. I sorely miss Hong Kong - British Crown Colony (!!)

    good evening
    (Stop here, cinema welcomes you)
    Classics... timeless in world cinema
Today we will be with the beautiful romantic immortal movie
    (Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing)
Love and its wonderful things is one of the classics of love cinema in the world.
Starring (William Holden, Jennifer Jones, directed by Henry King)
An American film produced in 1955, based on a true story about two lovers whose hearts were touched by love. The story is about Dr. Han Suen, a Chinese father, a British mother, and journalist Mark Elliot, an American national.
It was written by Dr. Swain in a love story published in 1952 under the title Many Wonderful Things. The success of the novel and its publication as a best-selling book during the period of its publication prompted film production companies to adopt it in a film project directed by the veteran Hollywood director Henry King, who began his career as a director in 1915 and established himself as an accomplished director of romance and presented many cinematic works. Love and its wonderful things were another one. His great movies.
The movie starring was entrusted to the great actress Jennifer Jones and the Hollywood star with a charming presence on the screen, William Holden, noting that Tyrone Power was a strong candidate for this role. At the time of the film’s production, the press was talking about the incompatibility and harmony between the two stars on a personal level, which sometimes reached the point of openly hating each other. However, the professionalism of the work made them, the moment the camera turned, become one of the most wonderful lovers on the cinema screen, and they immortalized a romantic work that is an icon in the cinema of love Until this moment, it is still shown on TV screens on Valentine's Day, and it continues to inflame the feelings of love among lovers and make their moments of tears for the lovers' tragedy.
The film, as well as all artwork, was met with streams of support and rejection, one of the streams of rejection was to nominate Jennifer Jones for the role, given that her look does not tend to the Asian form, not even her character composition, and despite Jones' beautiful performance of the character of Dr. Swain, the decision to choose her for the role was widely condemned. The biggest motivator of the rejection was the love relationship between two different races, eastern and western, which was met with great rejection and disapproval by the European and British society in particular. This relationship was linked to the issue of adultery between two married people in the first place. These matters may not raise interest today, but they represented a major problem and challenge to the values Societal at the time of the emergence of the love story realistically or at the time of its transformation into a literary and cinematic work. But the film, with its emotional charge and its wonderful romance, was able to transcend all these narrow ideas and launch to contemporary horizons that transcended the production time and stripped the recipient of all this racism to melt in the crucible of love, forgetting everything outside it, and it remains immortal throughout the ages in the memory of ancient generations and present a living presence in the memory of generations contemporary. The wonderfulness of the film and the wonderfulness of the love in which it is not understood and appreciated only by lovers who loved and lost or who lived the experience of true love.
All the elements of the film from script, directing, montage, acting performance, wonderful photography and production management were a group of pearls that Sami Fein woven with his soundtrack for the film, which he put as a melody for a song bearing the name of the film, which topped the song list in 1955 and is still an immortal icon in the world of love songs to be a wonderful contract in good Cinema of Romance and Love. It was a film about a love story in its purest and most civilized form, despite the external cultural and civilizational conflicts and the internal conflict in the heart of the two lovers. It was one of the most unforgettable love stories in the world of cinema. Although it is a story of tragedy, and a story of a very short life in which the two lovers did not have enough time to be together, but that time was enough to realize that true love is a wonderful thing, and that it is the essence of life.
The movie has a rating of 6.5 on IMDB
He was nominated for eleven awards, eight of which were for the Oscars, winning three of them
It also won the Golden Clubs Award for Best Film
My sincere appreciation to those with good taste
