- A rope tow I threw together at Kevin Springs.
Ingredients:
11hp Honda engine
Some kind of 4 speed junkyard industrial transmission
Trailer axle and wheel for the return pulley
Napa belt to drive transmission
Junkyard 26" bike wheel
Weld together and connect top and bottom with a pile of rope (3/8" poly, soon to be replaced with 1/2" poly)
Kill switch to shut down motor in case of entanglement.
Transmission is needed to slow down the speed of the rope.

great design. i just built my own rope tow based on your setup. I used a 6hp engine, snow blower transmission, and a 26in bicycle wheel for the drive pulley. Thanks for the video, it helped me out a lot with my own project!
best thing I've ever seen, making one of these
Great stuff
Get the kids started young
Cool project
This is real cool !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@henri4046, Nice! post a video.
I'm going to keep an eye out for old snowblowers.
the 6hp motor worked well, although i never used it on any super steep hills. I would imagine a 5hp would work too, although you might need to use a greater gear reduction so you have enough torque to pull a skier up the hill
outstanding!
Hey cool nice way to make your own
awesome
Some kind of old industrial transmission made by Western Mfg Co.
The junkyard is your friend.
Pulleys are just wheels
Horizontal shaft Honda motor
Google is your friend
thanks for the reply. im not sure I completely understand, do you mean using different size gears or the snowblower transmission when you refer to using gear reduction?
What was the optimum size drive pulley for the rope and estimated RPM?
how did the 6hp engine work? im thinking about building one with a 5hp briggs and stratton horizontal shaft and need some input. thanks
what kind of transmission is that and how did you connect the ends of the rope? thanx!
where did you get the engine?
What is that transmission you used? More pictures of the unit would be appreciated. Thank you!
it's a Western Mfg. Co. industrial transmission that I stumbled across. I only use 1st gear in it as the higher gears are too fast. If I had to do it no, I would only use pulleys and use trial and error to get the speed right. The motor needs geared down as it'll run the rope way too fast at proper operating rpm. It's time for you to start tinkering in the workshop.
@@farmerkevin thank you. I’m going to try building one and was curious what you used to power the pulleys.
For Sale????
Willing to sell setup?
Make me an offer I can’t refuse.

lol Kevin Springs hahahahahah
This is the the lazy mentality of modern parents & lazy kids that spawned the "skinny jeans" market. We used to hustle back up the hills with our muscle power.
You're calling this guy 'lazy' for designing, engineering, and building a rope tow? And your logic for this is because he should be using his muscles to climb up himself? Also, what the heck does skinny jeans have to do with the rope tow this guy built?
