- I made this video to be a both humorous and informational video about both Hayao Miyazaki and Hidetaka Miyazaki. I did it in a versus format to make it a bit more fun an engaging. I hope you enjoy!

Hidetaka Miyazaki: Work is gritty, post-apocalyptic dark fantasy; seems to be an upbeat, happy dude. All of the poison swamps.
Hayao is indeed miserable, i genuinely don't enjoy the movies knowing how negative he constantly is, he's a stuck up old bag of sadness.
Hidetaka is the biggest Gigachad in the games industry, he's a very chill and happy guy, doesn't care if others criticize him/his work or try to imitate his work down to T.
Honestly it’s very interesting how they are so different yet have such different outlets

I still always find it funny how the man who creates movies full of hope and childlike wonder is incredibly grumpy, hard, and pessimistic. The one who makes worlds full of suffering, despair, and unimaginable horrors is a kind, humble, and childlike man.
Honestly, I think that’s part of what makes Hidetaka’s work so good. The worlds he makes aren’t grimdark out of pessimism, they’re like. That to serve the themes of triumph in the face of impossible odds. I honestly think that Hidetaka Miyazaki is one of the best game directors out there for making theme, setting, and gameplay work together.
It's such a wonderful example of just because someone's work looks depressing, doesn't mean they are depressed. And the other way around! The contrast between the two Miyazaki's is to great, it's kinda funny. They are like diametric opposites.

Hidetaka Miyazaki said he wanted to make games that captures his experience of playing 1980s PC RPGs in English when he didn’t speak the language, and those RPGs were obscure even if you spoke English. You could easily get locked out of completing and keep playing for months without realizing it.

I've heard the same about old fantasy movies.
In any case, I find it interesting how the soulsborne games have this very "jamais vu" feel to them. In a sense that they feel like "western" sword fantasy, made by someone with a different cultural background. Something familiar, but also new and strange.

@@mahtimonni97 I really dig that about Dark Souls etc, and Elden Ring. The 'typical' Medieval Europe setting, with a lot of themes of godliness/divinity (that feel vaguely Christian at times with the cathedrals etc, especially in Demon's Souls where the deity is just called "god"). But through a Japanese lens. Bloodborne as well, that Victorian/gothic setting but through a Japanese lens. It's just... artistically striking? Idk how to describe it.
Hidetaka's games are bleak and oppressive but contain an underlying theme of hope and self-overcoming.
He understands that there is nothing more profound than hope in the face of overwhelming hopelessness.

Do you also know that Miyazaki's father beated his son with belt, but delayed his attacks, so son couldn't avoid them with rolling? That's why he tried to parry, but whiplashes can't be parried.

Few people know that one day Miyazaki finally learned to evade and memorized all of his father's patterns. Then his father started to deal ten times more damage, frantically rush around the room and also use fast combos mixed with delayed attacks. However, the father knew it isn't enough to surprise his son, so all his belt attacks have gained an area damage in case Miyazaki decided to roll behind him. And even when Miyazaki thought he can drink some Fanta safely, father's belt attack instantly reached him across the room.
No miyazaki is translated as shrine cape. 宮 (miya) meaning "temple, shrine, palace" and 崎 (saki) meaning "cape, peninsula".

Both of them are passionate in their work, but they are also men of their own times. Hayao saw ruin and prosperity in the aftermath of WW2, and Hidetaka saw prosperity and ruin through the near end of thr Showa period and the market crash of the 90s.
Also Death's Door is clearly inspired by both men.

I’ve heard Hayao has a very… 'strong' personality and can be kind of unpleasant to work with and is a harsh parent. Idk if I’ve ever heard anyone say anything bad about Hidetaka. He seems to just be a lil guy.

In terms of inspiration, have you noticed that like 40% of the games that was revealed during Summer Game Fest was pretty "Souls-like". And now every good game of 80 score and up has this gameplay mechanic.

I mean, elden ring sold millions and millions, many companies want some of that cake. Of course there is influence but a lot of them are just greedy companies jumping on the trend. 90% of those games are going to be shit, look at lords of the fallen.
Not only that, but it seems the majority of GOOD 3rd person RPG games nowadays are also soulslikes. Lies of P is a good example, that's GOTY for me and it's heavily inspired by Bloodborne and Sekiro.
Hayao is little misunderstood tho. Because even tho he says grim stuff what he really means is that the world is corrupted, like for example that quote about Manhattan, he just says that all of this monetary system is fake and the worst kind of people chase money and build these abominations like Manhattan to showcase their false god. And he just says that he would like to see that to transform to original form where there is nature and peace. Also that quote about anime being mistake be says that in the context of anime that he makes is really expensive and for many many years they were barely breaking even, also the process itself is really draining and Hayao is really involved into his projects, so considering his age I think he is just tired of this work, and just making normal movies would be easier, cheaper and probably at the end making more money.
I think it still comes off as highly judgmental to say those kind of things. Some of the things he says feels like the rumbling of an old man who only sees things as black or white and choose to shut himself down to any kind of changes. Don't get me wrong everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion and obviously nothing is wrong with him saying what he feels. But I don't know, saying these things this way is definitely not inspiring at all for me. That's okay though his work is highly inspiring!

To the point of both of them having personalities that are opposites of their work (grumpy pessimistic Hayao making wonderous and happy stories and jolly, positive Hidetaka making ruined, decaying worlds with the faintest glimmer of hope imaginable), I always like to bring up the phenomena of fandoms acting in the same way. Fandoms for happy, colorful media are often ruthless and depraved (Steven Universe, MLP), while fandoms for dark and horrible things are often positive and joyful (Fear & Hunger being a great example)

“80 hours of gameplay” I’m on 600+ and 2 days ago I found a new weapon, in a new dungeon, from killing a new enemy. Studio Ghibli movies are amazing and the amount of detail and passion in every frame is astounding. But the fact that every step in Elden ring feels so full of life, with a quantity of 600+ hours… I can’t act like this isn’t an unfair comparison
Also dark souls 3 boss designs are infinitely better than any character studio Ghibli had designed I don’t care what anyone says, the bosses are all way too cool and iconic.

I think I give Works to Hayao for variety. While there are core feelings to what makes his work feel like Hayao Miyazaki, Nausicaa, My Neighbour Totoro, and the Boy and the Heron feel very different to each other. Where in Hidetaka’s case, there are a lot more parallels in his stories, sometimes a bit too much. The world of decay can only feel fresh so many times.
Sekiro's story felt fresh to me, it didn't rely so much on the decaying world narrative

I really wouldn't agree with "The Works" section of Hayao miyazaki. His works aren't targeted towards kids. Characters aren't easily separated in good or bad such as Eboshi, Howl, Baba, Jiro, etc. His themes are very prevalent but also subtle. Such as envitomental or consequences of techonogical advancements. Despite not growing up with his films, no other film gives me nostalgia or magical feeling than his films.
He's also the co creater of Ghibli and, while there are other directors like Isao, he is the biggest contributer of its success. Studio ghibli is considered the equivalent of pixar or Disney (Though this is more coporate). Studio Ghibli is recognized worldwide.

Hmmm I feel like hiyos work is a lot more deep than just kids movies. They all talk about war and people trying to survive in it.
Big fan of both, but you’re selling Hayao short on the first point. There’s a ton of thematic depth in even his most simple, childish movies and he’s pretty unique in how he breaks traditional story structure and character dynamics. You’d be benefited by watching them and focusing on more than the surface narrative
Ironic that the guy whose worlds are full of child-like wonder and eye candy can have such a dour outlook on life, while the guy who made Bloodborne is surprisingly optimistic and wholesome.
I honestly expected for there to be a death battle between the two and we'd see their irl stats and feats to see which is more likely to win
suprising how someone who creat hopeful and inspiring movies and animation can be quite pessimistic, while somone who made some of the darkest and hopeless story in videogame is among one of the brightest, optimistic and happy people.

I grew up on the Metal Gear Solid games. I still love them, I didn't touch Dark Souls until I was 17.
When I finally finished it, my entire outlook on games was changed. Going from hours of cutscnes where everything is explained in painstaking detail to bloodstains and item descriptions was extremely jarring but I'm commited to MILF ideology now. Man I Love Fromsoftware.
I've killed everything from Demon's Souls to Elden Ring except for the DLC for ER. I'm working on it but it just came out yesterday.
Nice. For me Demon's Souls completely changed my taste in games, back then I mostly played stuff like Uncharted 2 and Battlefield 3 but after DeS I spammed Souls games for a decade. Nowadays I play more varied stuff but I still love Souls ofc
Hayao's childhood and teenage years are the reasons why he's like that. Imagine living through the nukes and all the post war period, with the country and its people in complete shambles. Peak humanity degradation, no wonder he wishes to be away from it
Not to mention his father beat him with the belt made it slow so he couldn’t dodge and when Hayao memorized the patterns his father jump from place to place to beat him up even made sure he couldn’t dodge his attacks
I don't really have a strong opinion. I love Dark Souls, and Elden Ring is great, but I don't know much about Hayao Miyazaki. Until now, I didn't know much about Hidetaka Miyazaki. I suspect Hayao is a better person than we hear about, but I'm pretty much won over by what I've heard about Hidetaka. Aside from that, I'm neutral.
I am really disappointed that for the average gamer, Hidetaka's storytelling is for people with the internet. In reality, the story simply is not given, it is shown in locations and items. You need to be an archeologist and deduct the story by yourself.
It would not be dark souls if they told you the story straight, I get your pov but if you are playing the game you can read the items and if you don't wanna bother yourself just read/watch it online
I am a big fan of games that have a relaxed story. Games like hollow knight or zelda. Technically the story to you becoming elden lord/lord of cinder is the games story which means every person will experience a unique story.
i personally loved the lore from elden ring but i gotta admit that the way it is presented through item descriptions isn't the most satisfying way of consuming a story. i like the visual storytelling aspect and i kinda get that it would be hard to give that much lore in another way besides item descriptions but i'll still rather go and watch lore videos than read the items. one could argue that if we had them in cinematics it would take away from the action and immersion but i feel reading the items has the same effect. i also understand that miyazaki has the theme of overcoming struggle to gain fulfillment in all aspects on his game but for me it wouldn't hurt making the story and the quests a little easier to follow. that's basically my only nitpick in elden ring, even though i still consider it a 10/10 masterpiece.
You dont need the internet you can piece together the major plot points with some investment. You need the internet if you want piece every single detail.
@@kevo300 there are people making maps with all the events and lore, cooperating with other creators and there is still not a clear enough image of the story. yes we all know the ring shattered, the demi gods fought with no winner and then we came in and got all the pieces to become lord and set a new order but the further you try to go deeper than that, the more convoluted and unclear the story becomes.
If i had a penny for any time a man named Miyazaki revolutionized his industry, i would have ... something something phineas and ferb reference.

While the other, is Adrenaline, excitement, pride, and cockiness.
I love watching characters make mistakes and now making mistakes when I play. two sides on the same coin
Really goes to show the ones trying to project so much happiness are the ones suffering the most. I mean just look at Robin Williams. Most people that suffer try to cover up their pain with happiness. Some people embrace it and learn from it, and become better people as a result. I think that's the biggest difference between these two men. Everyone suffers. It's just all about how you choose to deal with it.

I really wonder if Hidetaka read Gormenghast at some point. Because when I first read that book about two years ago, I realized that it absolutely oozes soulslike vibes in terms of worldbuilding and dialogues.
I remember hearing somewhere that Hidetaka once said that his style of writing was in part based on his childhood experiences of reading fantasy books in English when his English wasn't actually good enough yet to understand everything, resulting in a very cryptic and fragmentary narrative. I wonder if Gormenghast was one of those books.
When the day comes when either of these men pass I will rewatch every studio ghibli movie and replay the souls games
It took me 3-4 hours of lore videos to understand that i don't need any of it to enjoy the wild ride
As a general rule, Hayao's movies make you think you've understood everything but in reality you've not grasped even a third of the complexity while Hidetaka's games make you think you have understood nothing while in reality you probably know more or less everything due to their simplistic narratives.
Hayao is an artist through and through, the more I learned about him the more I respect the man. He has a code of ethics that he fallows not what's hot or trendy, had a long life and saw a lot of horror.

Hidetaka history as a game developer and as a true master of his art is truly inspiring the way he has such a detailed thinking of the worlds he builds are fascinating especially in the realm of game development and variety of ways to experience his craft, however once you're understand Hayao life is when you kinda of understand his view of it and why he does what he does, the man is harsh molded by time and by war and yet he find's a way to transform all of his experiences as a human being into art, his movies once you know the man make even more sense for his views on war, ecology, childhood, japanese mythology a deep dive into his career shows such a complexe character the man is a hard headed grump but I kinda get it the guy wants to make art but inevitably becames a international hit and I don't believe he ever wished for that perhaps he even hates that, anyway Hidetaka creates characters and world's as harsh as possible but has always a way to win a way to satisfy yourself, Hayao on the other hand was molded in a world as harsh and cruel as Hidetaka's but his world is very real and he tries to be the one that will make our world a little bit more tolerable, they really have a lot in common even in ways that we don't expect.

Cynicism is a defense mechanism for many people. When it has no bounds, it can turn into spitefulness.
Hayao may well be a decent person, but perhaps he feels the pain from his younger years and tries to shield himself from things that could hurt him again. If he crosses a line, it might be because of a deep wound that won't heal.
This is not an excuse, just a possible explanation. I don't know the man, I could be reading him completely wrong.
I want the next Soulsborne world to be written in partnership with Hayao Miyazaki this time. Two opposing philosophies joining together to make this world could be interesting.
As an artist and a huge fromsoft fans, this is hard, this video is for fun and all and there's no need for picking a winner

I have a theory, that the majority of Miyazaki's films are more connected then we think. With multiple species of animals and similar architecture showing up in different movies. While you could say that its down to creative creative similarities. The inclusion of the fox squirrel kind of breaks this idea.

I think Hayao Miyazaki is just tired. he's old and was born during a really miserable time, and animation can be unbelievably soul crushing to both do and direct. Remember, the man is 83 years old.

Loved the films of Miyazaki, loved the games of Miyazaki, it's hard to choose between Miyazaki and Miyazaki, but I honestly love Miyazaki more because of the things that his art gives to you and also because he loves my country, so Miyazaki is the final choice.

Both Miyazakis are absolute legends. They both came from nothing to masters of their craft.
i relate this to something i see in music often, hayao is like the arctic monkeys of music, a master of their craft to be sure, but with hooks for the masses. Meanwhile hidetaka is like the guitarist for some avant garde technical death metal band with 7 minute long solo's and 600 different 1/8th notes a minute all arpeggiated perfectly, but the only people who love it are people who are already in the community (metal nerds for this example)
