  • GIMMELWALD - THE MOST SURPRISING VILLAGE IN SWITZERLAND - A UNIQUE TRADITIONAL SWISS VILLAGE😊
The rustic village of Gimmelwald, clinging to a cliff above Switzerland's Lauterbrunnen Valley, is just this side of paradise.
When told you're visiting Gimmelwald, the Swiss assume you mean the famous resort in the neighboring valley, Grindelwald. When assured that Gimmelwald is your target, they lean forward, widen their eyes and - with their lilting Swiss-German accent - ask: "And how do you know Gimmelvald?"
Smart travelers know to seek out the offbeat spots, avoiding resort towns and focusing instead on gems like Gimmelwald. This traffic-free village hangs casually on the edge of a cliff above the Lauterbrunnen Valley, 30 minutes south of Interlaken by car or train.
This sleepy village has more watering holes than mailboxes. Here, white-bearded elven old men smoke hand-carved pipes while keeping an eye on the occasional farmer who passes by on a mini-truck towing a rickety wagon of hay. Stones called Schindles sit like heavy checkerboards on old roofs, waiting for nature's next move. While these stones protect the slate from harsh winter winds, in summer it is so quiet you can hear the cows tearing up tufts of grass. Only a vast sea of mountain air separates Gimmelwald from the cliffs that rise on the other side of the valley. Small avalanches across the valley resemble distant, momentary waterfalls. Kick a football wrong and it ends up on the valley floor, a quarter of a mile below you.
Every year, the residents of Gimmelwald systematically harvest the steep hillside in front of their windows. Entire families cut and collect every inch of hay. After harvesting what the scythe can reach, they pull the hay from the nooks and crannies by hand. Half a day is spent on steep rocks harvesting what a machine can cut in two minutes on flat ground. But it's tradition. It's like breathing. And there's only one right way to do it.
To breathe the Alps and really hold it in, sleep high in Gimmelwald. Poor but pleasantly stuck in the past, the village has two guest houses, a decent pension, a happy inn and a few chalets rented by the week. a black-tinted chalet with eight balconies, immense views and a few tables shaded by parasols on its small terrace. Evening fun in Gimmelwald takes place in the hostel, where young Alpine hikers are eager to share information about the surrounding mountains.
Gimmelwald's main source of income is tourism, and the village has a small hotel, a former guesthouse (now a British hotel), a bed & breakfast and the Mountain Hostel. Gimmelwald was prevented from developing into a major ski resort by having it declared an avalanche zone, which is only partially the case. In summer, Gimmelwald is mainly visited by tourists from North America and in winter it is mainly visited by European and Swiss tourists for winter sports.
