  • Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #554
While tooling around the remote and desolate White Mountains on the California/Nevada border, I stumbled on a little cabin that turned out to have a very interesting provenance: it's where the students of mysterious, elite Deep Springs college go play cowboy in the summertime!

FYI Deep Springs 'Ranch' was a location actually shot and cited in the 1942 Robert Cummings movie, "Saboteur". On the personal side for me, it was where my grandfather died in 1972. He was a maintenance worker at the college and had a heart attack or stroke or maybe just slipped on the rocks of a pond while trying to net a floating trout. I think he would like the idea of netting a trout as his last act!

LoL... I spent about a week out there at the college in 1987 while my ex was drilling behind the college. Swimming in their pond and eating lunch with the students. Those ”kids" were extremely intelligent, so much so that I was lost to their conversations. But on the other hand they seemed to have a hard time with normal everyday tasks like cooking, cleaning, maintaining a tidy appearance. I believe teaching them daily life's functions was part of the school's purpose. At least that's what I observed then...perhaps different now.

You're so right about the hug from Mom, I have so many memories as a child and cream of mushroom soup, I swear our Moms could make anything and we'd eat it, not like these spoiled kids these days with picky appetites, we where made to eat what she made or go to bed hungry. Yes I've gone to bed without dinner before and I'm still here, I hated eating beets, my Step-dad was mean as hell and that night I couldn't leave the table because I had already started to eat, and we had to eat everything mom made, I sat there from 5:00 until 10 something drinking the last few gulps of pink milk from taking 1 bite of a beet and washed it down with milk.. that sucked.. I still hate beets for that reason, he ruined for me...

@@Regina0964 Ew beets! I remember no matter what my mom made there would be a plate of white bread and a jar of peanut butter for my dad to have with dinner. And yes you ate what was made or you didn’t eat at all. Luckily we didn’t have to clean our plate like you did. If we didn’t like something on the table we didn’t have to put it on our plate. That said we couldn’t just eat extra of what we did like if we left something off the plate.

    • @soonerorlater9297
      @soonerorlater9297 3 года назад

@@Regina0964 We had the same "step-Dad" Regina, except mine loved beets & he hogged them all for himself. (smiles & hug) My Mom was the "mean" one who would play that "eat or else" game. I was like you, I would be the one sitting there trying to hide food in the napkin or feed it to the dog or "accidently" drop it on floor... (hug).
      GOD BLESSES ALL.
Footnote: And...you R right. To this day, I still don't eat that stuff I did not like as a kid. The trick? The trick is to BREAK the cycle. With my Son? I would find out what he did not like & my logic to him was "just try one bite"...."If you still do not like it, fine, you do not have to eat it". I did the REVERSE with some foods, too. I would find out what "candy's, cookies, "garbage"...he liked & I would FLOOD the house with them. To this day? My Son doesn't eat alot of crap that's not good for him. Funny how reverse psychology will work, sometimes. (wink) Oh, and for the "record" my Son still does NOT like those foods he hated as a kid.

The giant cans of cream of mushroom are used for the gravy on top of the pork chops that they cook. It is the short cut, quick and easy way to have a more flavorful additive to whatever meat they have been cooking. It’s that simple. I’m guessing, maybe. 1- can of cream of mushroom soup
1 or 2 potatoes washed and quartered or chunked

1 or 2 onions quartered or chunked
      Aluminum foil or lid

Put the chicken quarters in the pan or casserole. Arrange the potatoes and onions and celery around the chicken quarters. Season. Top it off with the cream of mushroom soup. Season again. Cover with foil or lid. Simmer for 45 minutes or so . Chow down.

Two things: A college education is never a waste of money. The second thing is, as other folks have stated, the cream of mushroom soup has many uses as an enhancement to things such as gravy, casseroles and I suppose if you were just absolutely starving you could eat it by itself but then in that case I agree it would be gross. Also, on a traditional cattle ranch, the cabin would be used as a line shack.

I wish you would have gone in there. I was there around 2001 and they were arguing about going co-ed I guess 20 years later they decided to do it. We got a tour of the whole place and met a lot of the students it was very interesting. Tuition is free but you have to work 20 hours a week if I remember correctly. The students and faculty run the place together.

I went to a disguised high school. Went all over the east coast and the mountains.
Oh 1 thing the was to get into the high school is being high and court committed.
The high was a joke but most of us were in the morning.
We were juvenile delinquents and about 30 in a graduate class.
    I was # 1, 1982

My son and found an old ghost town in the White Mountains north of Deep Springs. Don’t know the name of it but it had 20-25 old buildings and several mines. Passed by Deep Springs College and always wondered what kind of college would be out in the middle of nowhere.

Wyman creek road looks like an interesting drive, also looks like its changed course a couple times over the past decades. Made me chuckle, here in the city you get one straight stretch of road with three name changes in as many miles, and heres wyman creek road thats got at least 5 dead end branches and drifts all with the same name.

Can of mushroom soup and chicken condensed soup can both be used . Use Mushroom soup for pork chops and have stove top pork dressing is pretty good stuff and I don't like mushroom. Then use condensed Chicken soup over chicken and use turkey stuffing too. Who knew growing up poor farmer kid is seen by elites as college education that was day in life of most farm kids in my day .Be safe Sarah be careful on your many adventures . God Bless one and all be safe get vaccines thank you all.

We got to visit deep springs and got a tour around The year 2000. One thing you didn't mention is that the students participate in running the place along with the faculty. The students pick new students and they hire and fire faculty. At the time they were arguing over whether to admit girls and I understand that it's still going on. The faculty will be okay with it and the students will say no and then next year the reverse happens. I think one year they both agreed on it and then the alumni sued. Anyway yes it is an exceptional school and I really enjoyed my tour. I just don't understand how they could be so far from girls.

I really hope you have a thing that uses grayish powder. Come on, I love musroom soup, more fresh mushrooms added. Fire in pasture to brand cattle or castrate. I would have loved to have gone to a college like that Deep Springs. Cook?, What?, Nope! There is a remote school in high desert in Az. where they send elite girls with behavioral problems. Cost a butt load to attend. The ranch I worked for in their reproduction section donated two very nice horses to the school. It was really beautiful place, but hidden. Would have loved to view Deep Springs.
