CBS Evening News finds a new tune

- You may have noticed something different about the broadcast Tuesday night. "CBS Evening News" is introducing a new theme song. But first, Scott Pelley looks back at the old music that signaled the day's top stories.

I'm really gonna miss the previous theme. It had a magic to it and while I understand how times change, there won't be a theme quite like that of the CBS Evening News anywhere.
The classic theme was reintroduced on August 29, 2022 in a remix version composed by Antfood.

CBS is switching back to the 2011-2016 music starting tonight (8/29/2022).

It's really not new. It's the previous one they had. I was mad when the went to a new one but happy now that the old one is back!

The late James Horner finally got some credit for "The CBS Evening News." Horner's theme was used during the Katie Couric era from 2006 to 2011. Scott Pelley didn't mention it when James Horner died in June 2015.
They probably should have played the James Horner theme on the June 23, 2015, broadcast, the night after his death, in his memory. James Horner said in 2006 that the "CBS Evening News" theme was one of his most difficult projects ever. He did a fine job.

I liked the two theme songs from the Dan Rather era better: the 1987-1991 theme (which Pelley brought back in 2011) and the 1991-2006 theme
Remember well it was just the teletype but just dead air in the later era of Cronkite. Heck they deviated when Katie C was anchor.
I like to see CBS Enforcer replay for the local stations myself.

CBS News' theme songs are among some of the best theme songs ever!
So glad they went back! The other one they've been using for the past couple years was good, but there is nothing like what they are using now.
The one from the late 80's was the best! And when it came back in 2011.

The 2006 is forever my favorite, followed by the Scott P one and now the current one. But that current one matches Norah O so perfectly!
James Horner's for me was the Best CBS ever got.
ABC News debuted their well-known theme in 1978, but it was John Williams' "The Mission" (aka the NBC News theme) that pressured CBS News to finally take the plunge.
Bob Israel composed ABC's iconic theme music, known for its four-note motif, when "World News Tonight" premiered on July 10, 1978. John Williams composed the iconic "NBC Nightly News" theme ("The Mission") in 1985. The huge success of NBC's theme music prompted CBS to go with an Oscar-winning film score composer when the network decided on a new theme to accompany Katie Couric's 2006 debut. The late James Horner was hired for that gig. In 2012, ABC retired its long-time theme and followed the other networks' leads by hiring Hans Zimmer.

John Ackerman no. The old theme made you almost feel as if something bad was going to happen. Jeff glor refers to it as “The Droopy Dog Theme”. Now I understand it’s the news but a more upbeat theme is nice to have to make the viewer feel less worried. I would use the old theme for the CBS overnight news

I think this *will* be the new sound of the CBS Evening News--it still lives on with small variations. That's normal. But the core of the theme sticks around!

From an European perspective, this theme makes like you are going to watch a ceremony or a gala. Except for the PBS NewsHour intro, all other major networks news’ theme sound like a gala and feel old...

CBS News should have adopted a technopop version of their sounder that uses the radio network's hourly newscasts.
I like it. It has a "Disney" sounds to it.

I don't like the current new theme song. It's too hyper. I think it's stolen from the theme song used during elections. I also don't like how the CBS news is peppered with commercials, especially for drugs. There is only about 14 min. of commercial free news at the very beginning of the newscast. After that, the viewer is bombarded with commercial after commercial and then a short tease for an upcoming 1 min. segment and then more commercials. Since CBS news is owned by a huge conglomerate, it would not be unthinkable for them to drastically reduce the commercials. I personally view the evening news as fast food with not much nutrition and not much news.
