hey , i would like to ask you something , behind the alternator there is like a blackish sirop , its probably an oilleak , but do you know where this leak is from? i own a 730i and have the same only behind the alternator-side , so the right side of the engine...
I watched your video on removing the water cooled alternator. Very helpful as I also have a 2001 X5. The only problem I have when I pull the alternator forward is it hits the power steering hose preventing me from fully removing the alternator.... How do you remove it with the power steering hose in the way???
I have a BMW X5 2003 4.4 and followed the video which is pretty good. I came to the point that required pulling the old alternator out... and no matter what i have tried... it appears to be stuck. Any suggestions?
I will be buying a 2001 BMW and the sunroof makes a noise and it doesnt open, the moonroof is out of track so do you think it is an easy fix and about how much do you think the replacement of the little motor that opens the window would be? any help plzzzz

Hello Marisela,
Based on the information and symptoms that you described, you would need to replace your whole moon roof cartridge/assembly. Seems like your sliding guide cables went off track and have chewed up assembly. Good news is that you dont need a moon roof motor since it tries to slide glass back.
Removal process is not hard, just time consuming. What model/year bmw are you going to buy?
I just replaced an alternator on a 540i 2000, everything went good but after 15 minutes began to overheating. In the process I disconected an oil cooler located under the alternator but I put it back. So has something to do that i disconect that whith the overheating?

How to you remove the coolant hose from the housing of the alternator without damaging it.? It was not included in the video. And that's the last piece connected to the alternator.
If you are already working on your alternator, I would recommend installing new hoses. Having said that, just cut old hose and install new ones.

I have a 2003 X5 3.3i (e53). Does it have the same water-cooled alternator? If so will the procedure roughly the same? It looks pretty involved.

Hope it fixes mine. I have the same problem with that message.
First off, good job replacing that water cooled alternator. Did you release all the air pockets from the cooling system by bleeding system? If you didn't, then you have to take that extra step. Seems like there are some air bubbles present in your cooling system.
Did you had to put a new gasket or seal for the new alternador?

Hello does this car have a hose that carries antifreeze to any part of the system? I ask because I have a very tiny drip of a collant leak and no one seems to be able to find it. I see the coolant on the ground but the mechanics are saying they can't find the leak. The car sits for days and it's a very tiny puddle smaller than the center of my hand but it's still there. Any ideas?

Actually there's two versions an air and water cooled. I have the water cooled version, it appears to be the same procedure. Really appreciate the video, I thought it was more difficult than it is.

I already went through 2 alternators: original one and a used one off a 740i. Today I am installing a new reman. bosch, ebay. Some ppl can rebuild these. A giveaway of a bad alt. is the x5 going into trans failsafe mode, battery dead. Can unlock your cluster option 9 and read cars voltage, should be 12-14 volts when running. I just hate wasting the coolant for this job. Bmw sucks..haha

@@bimmermerchant my x5 4.4i has been sitting in my driveway for about 4 days now. The battery died but I had it recharged today. . Nownu am waiting for my remanufactured Bosch water cooled alternator to get here...
***when disconnecting the cable from the front of the alternator, and after removing the 17mm nut , there is a slim 12mm nut behind the 17mm that also secures the cable to the alternator. I dont know if all the water cooled BWM alternators have this nut but in your video yours clearly didnt have one and mine did...... I tried like hell to pull off the power cable and couldnt. Come to find out, that there is a slim 12mm nut that holds the cable to the alternator that you cant see. I had to use a mirror to see it.

James Gilbert Sorry, don't know what you mean by 'hits power steering hose'. Alternator should slide forward, we didn't have an issue with hose.
+bimmermerchant Youll have to unbolt and drop the power steering pump down or move it forward if the hose in in the way. use a coat hanger or large zip ties to suspend it off part of the frame so as to not put stress on the connections to the hoses.
