    My only concern about the acrylic platter is cleaning the vinyl with a static brush. Does the vinyl grip the platter securely during this cleaning process? I static/dust clean my vinyl this way EVERY time before I drop that needle, as I'm sure most vinyl enthusiasts do, and I'm a bit concerned that the platter may be likely to keep spinning while the record may slip causing it to be scratched up by the platter. Does the acrylic platter grip the vinyl well if at all? I'm hoping someone can confirm this concern of mine.

    The RT85's not having a built-in switchable preamp is actually a plus to me, as most if not all built-in preamps aren't really all that good, and it eliminates just that much more electronics for the signal to go to before going to a good preamplifier, i.e., a dedicated external one. The RT85 is for those who either already own a phono pre-amp or are okay buying one along with the RT85.

      A felt, cork, or rubber mat will also get dusty or dirty without proper care. Acrylic is great, your resonance improves and bass gets tighter. You’ll really notice it with a higher quality cartridge and speakers. Just keep your dust cover on when you’re not using your turntable and give it a quick wipe with a clean lint free cloth before setting a record on it.

    i would consider if they would ship it to europe.. i was already going to choose the 85 model anyway. I don't like built in preamps. It sacrifices the sound quality. Sometimes less is more. EDIT: i noticed they now do ship to europe but the total amount is a price i would pay for a better model like a technics so given the money i would probably choose a brand new mk7 from technics.

    When it comes to build in pre-amps, the point should go to the RT85 for NOT having one. Notice all turntables with build in pre-amps is found in the lower end consumer class (unless they are manufactured and sold by vultures, but that's another matter). Also notice that they all use the same chip in the pre-amp as a lot of cheaper external pre-amps, and that particular chip is a limitation on the sound quality, no matter what components it's otherwise assembled with. Pre-amps can be turned off some may argue, but though being turned off the signal still passes through the pre-amp on most turntables, which affects the sound in a negative way. Therefore a turntable without build in pre-amp, will always be the winner, and the cost of the build in pre-amp can be used on improvements on other points, or save you a few bobs you can use on a decent pre-amp, or better; A vintage amp/receiver which have build in pre-amps (no chips/IC's) that beats the crap out off even half expensive modern pre-amps, while the amplifier also sounds better than a lot of modern plastic, bluetooth, usb junk.
    As a total newcomer build in pre-amps are okay as long as it is on a cheap turntable (AT 60 for instance). Never spend too much to begin with, because you will wish for better after a while, and having spend too much on a turntable with build in pre-amp can kinda stop you from taking the next step. But you'll know that as you learn more.
    Build in pre-amp is for the beginner, and those who just want an easy way to listen to their vinyl. Some may feel it's good enough and stick with it, but if your ears are any good you won't stay pleased with it in the long run. That's the simple facts though some may not like it. And that's why the point should go to the RT85.

      Aw, man, I was planning to get an Audio Technica with a built-in preamp!

    • @TheSoundrookie
      @TheSoundrookie 3 года назад

      Hello Andrie.
      If you are looking at your first turntable to see if vinyl is for you, the Audio Technica LP 60 can be a good choice. It's very easy to set up and use, and you don't have to think about alignment etc. It's also a good choice simply because it's cheap, so it won't stop you from spending more if/when you wanna take the next step. It's an okay beginners turntable for it's price. I of course recommend that you listen to advice from more people than just me, because ears and opinions are different, but personally I wouldn't recommend going with the LP 120. It cost too much compared to what you get, and as you can see in many videoes here on YT, I'm far from alone on that opinion. First of all the build in pre-amp doesn't sound good, and since the signal still passes through the pre-amp when it's "turned off", many people chose to open their turntables and remove it completely. You will also find videoes showing that people have put rubber rings on the tonearm because it has a ringing resonance. The weight of the turntable is not due to quality, but to a heavy platter they put in the bottom - All the plastic around it still vibrates and pick up resonances - You can also find videoes confirming that. It's rotation precision is dissapointing for a direct drive etc etc. At first glance, one may get the impression that it offers a lot, but do your research and use your ears, and see if that impression lasts. I'm quite aware that I probably piss off a few people by being so straightforward, but as you will see, I haven't said anything that you cannot easily get confirmed. Either by taking one home you can get rid off again after testing, or just by looking at videoes.
      If you on the other hand are getting back to vinyl, or are looking for a replacement/step up from the one you have, my advice is go for a turntable without build in pre-amp. If your ears are just reasonably good, you won't be satisfied with a build in pre-amp. Sadly it is an aftermarket/beginners/lower consumer class thing.
      Hope this is helpful.
      Stay safe.

      I was thinking of getting the 81 but don’t want to sacrifice sound quality by having the preamp built in. At the same time I don’t want to spend the $ up front for an 85. Was thinking of getting the 82 and just upgrade cartridge and platter over time. My receiver is a Denon AVR-1910 so doesn’t have a phono input. I don’t have a preamp already so I’ll have to buy one. Thoughts on all this?

    • @TheSoundrookie
      @TheSoundrookie 3 года назад +1

      Hello Dirt Therapy.
      Since the Denon AVR-1910 is a surround receiver there's another problem when it comes to hifi. For home cinema it's great, but the signal passes through the surround chip even on bypass, and that chip doesn't do soundquality any favors. My thoughts are that you can choose to do one of two things. Either go with the 81 because it's fine for a receiver like that, and if you like the surround option that can be the way to go. The other thing you can do, if you are going for hifi stereo, is to go with the 82 as you mention, and get a stereo receiver with build in pre-amp (can especially reccommend a 1970's model since they have awesome sounding pre-amps, and sounds great in general).
      The thing is that you have to make a choice between hifi and surround, unless you go with a stereo receiver and a seperate surround decoder with the rest of the speaker channels build in. That way you can have both.
      Hope this is helpful.
      Stay safe Mate.

    And I too can testify that the Ortofon 2m Blue is worth the upgrade. If you absolutely can’t afford the higher price for it, then get the 81. But I can tell you that it’s worth saving up for the 85. Your ears will thank you!!!

    Im 62 and id be fine with the RT81, I prefer rubber mats, dislike acrylics platters as I feel they are over hyped, and I dislike the appearance of exposed drive belts - Theres no need for a nice table to have the belt exposed it offers zero advantage either sonically or mechanically and makes it look like some kind of half finished shop project. Assuming a quiet motor and accurate platter speed the two things that make the most difference are the cartridge and the preamp used.
