    This is one of the best instructional videos for this that I have found.
    One question though, my cat Maggie comes when called just fine inside and I can reward with a treat.
    However, once outside she doesn't come when called very much and has little interest in the treat. Even in the yard where she has been many times.
    I think outside is just too stimulating. Any tips on getting her to come when called outside?

      Thank you! What kind of food did you try for the training? What about high-quality wet food or cooked chicken hearts? Some cats respond more to play or cuddle/praise than to food. My cat Yozora makes a lot more progress in training, when I praise & cuddle her a lot.
      For example when we did the Water-Training. She wouldn't go into the water for any food. But when she got showered with attention, praise & cuddle, she started to like water...haha. Now, when she goes into water, she starts purring immediately, since she knows, that she gets a lot of love. For my cat Otani was food more than enough to motivate him.

I tried chicken hearts, 3 different kinds of high quality wet foods, tuna, lower quality foods, dried meat, other low quality treats, ground meat.. he likes some of them but is definitely not excited enough about them that they would work for outside training. He likes attention, but I'm not sure if that will work for training outside? When he is tense, it doesn't seem too distract him enough. I think I need to be very patient haha! Really thank you for your great training. I have been trying to "exercise" my Baba cat for his health. 1.Still can"t figure out a "treat" to begin with, for training at home. 2. When we go into the garden of the temp house we are staying in, too much stimuli in the beginning, then he gets bored and wants to venture out under bushes and places i cannot access. From 2 months of observation: he has no interest in WALKING. It"s about getting fresh air, being intrigued by birds and other animals" smell rub, and desire to go into bushes which signals to me that he is hungry. Then he knows to go back into the house , where i feed him strictly, because I want him to know that only food is available if he comes home, since we are preparing to move.

      Well, I guess the training will only be successful after you move. Since without feeding a cat outdoors on a walk, it not so easy to train them...especially in an area with a lot of stimuli.

    Hi!! I just adopted 2 wonderful kittens that are so curious and I plan to walk em outside but first time I tried they wanna walk on separate directions. So stressful with a short leash. This video will be very helpful!!
    Do you hold 2 extending leash handle on both hands or is there a way you can attach them on a belt so you have free hands?

    • @TravelersGarden_dgdr
      @TravelersGarden_dgdr Год назад

      Glad you like it.
      In my video at 12:47 I answer your question about dealing with 2 flexible leashes.
      I wouldn`t use a belt as a solution, it`s not practical for several reasons. Using a regular leash to put 1 flexible leash over the shoulder & head (as seen in the video) is better.
      Also you only should have 1 flexible leash attached to you (over your shoulder & head), the other one has to be held in your hand. Having both flexible leashes over the shoulder & head is a bad idea. I tried i & it leads to way much work (leashes tangle up quicker).
      When I had 3 cats & walked all together, I also only had 1 flexible leash over the shoulder & head...the rest (2 flexible leashes) where in my hand. (You can see that in my videos as well.)

    Hi! Thank you very much for your videos, they help a lot!! I'm training my cat with your tips.
    I have a question, how can I teach my cat to follow me when he has his harness on without him escaping? When I'm in front of him it's easier for him to escape from his harness. Do you have some tips?
    Thanks again for everything, you have the best channel, everything here is very clean!!

    • @TravelersGarden_dgdr
      @TravelersGarden_dgdr Год назад +1

      Thank you very much! Glad my videos are helpful for you.
      What kind of harness do you use?
      The only way a cat can escape from a harness is, when it walks backwards & the owner pulls the leash at the same time. Without the leash pulling, the cat can`t get out of the harness.
      So, you can very easily avoid this problem...don`t pull the leash, when the cat walks backwards. Instead follow the cat & keep the leash loose, it won`t walk backwards for long (it`s not comfy for a cat walk like that, so they will turn around quickly...meaning its butt will face you & then you can stop it with the leash).
      When it walk backwards walk to it quickly, but still calm (don`t panic, don`t scold the cat etc...just calmly talk to it.). Squad down & pet it to calm it down.
      Usually cats walk backwards out of fear...so, calming down is most important. If you have a fearful cat, take a cat backpack or even better a pet buggy with you. It can just into that, when being afraid & then you have way less problems of a cat trying to run away out of fear. (I have both things shown on my channel...the pet buggy is the best for fearful cats. Push it next or infront of the cat...keep it open, so it can jump in any time.)
      If the cat walks backwards out of protest/dominance, then you need to train it better to be ok with the harness & leash (at home & then outdoors). Positive motivation is important. Don`t pull the leash to make it follow you. Use the leash only for stopping a cat to get into danger, stopping it from running away etc.
      Make also sure, that your cat doesn`t get stuck with the leash or harness on a bush or similar...that can make problems (panic, getting out of harness etc).
      Wish you a lot of success.
      Rita

      @@TravelersGarden_dgdr Wow... thank you very much for your response!!!!
      I use the harness from "rabbitgoo", is it maybe bad?
      And about the leash, I have a "flexi 8 meters long" (I think it's the same as you use!). But the problem is that the leash provokes a little tension and it pulls a little, so I need to keep some of the cord in my hand. And because of that, the cat could more easily escape!! Oh, sorry! I forgot to say that the cat is comfy in his harness, he plays, eats and jumps with it! So maybe is it the mix leash + harness that creates a tension in the leash?

    • @TravelersGarden_dgdr
      @TravelersGarden_dgdr Год назад +1

      Glad to help.
      I think there is a problem with your flexible leash...because the tension should be barely noticeable for the cat & definitely shouldn`t be pulling the cat.
      As you can see in my videos, my flexible leashes don´t pull on the cats or harnesses...it`s just a very slight feeling that doesn`t bother them.
      You may be using a wrong flexible leash. The length is not the problem (I have 8m as well), but it needs to be right weight class. i use weight class "S" for adult cats & weight class "XS" for kittens.
      The weight class is important...if you use the wrong one, the tension is way too much for cats (Since e.g. "M" & "L" is for average & big dogs.)
      So, how much does your cat weight & what age is it?
      Depending on weight you need either S or XS. XS has only a length of 3-4m (8m doesn`t exist for XS).
      So, please check the weight of your cat & the weight class of your flexible leash.
      As for the harness. It`s not one that I would use, but I think it`s not the cause of the cat slipping out of the harness...except it`s put on too loose. Only 2-3 fingers should fit between neck & belly.
      But again, I think t`s most likely the flexible leash being the wrong weight class for your cat.
      Best Regards, Rita

    • @TravelersGarden_dgdr
      @TravelersGarden_dgdr Год назад +1

      P.S.: When my cats go backwards, I don`t even have to make the flexible leash loose (I just don`t push the stop button) & it doesn`t have enough pull to make the harness slip at all.
      So, the tension is really minimal...or that`s how it should be.

    I have a question, i live with my 13 year old cat in a very, very small appartment With not much to do for a cat. Me and my cat walk in the hallway everyday, he is not a scared cat but can be cautious. My cat had 6 years outside experience, I want to harnas train my cat so he can go outside. I saw a lot of harnas training videos with owners who who can go right outside with their cat from their home but i cant do that because i live in an appartment, we have to go through a hallway, walk down the stairs and then go through another hallway and then were in the outside garden. There's also automatic doors, which i have to open by pressing a button, he is not used to automatic doors. he always thinks someone is coming from the other side of the door which makes him a little cautious.
    My question is how can i harnas train him while living in a appartment?

    • @TravelersGarden_dgdr

      Well, I live in an Apartment in the city as well. I have to go down a stairwell from the 4th floor.
      I carry my cats down with a cat backpack or carrier. I don't let them walk down the stairwell, because the neighbors could spook my cats...plus some neighbors have dogs & they don't always have the best control over them.
      So, that's what I recommend for you...carry your cat in a safe backpack/carrier till you are outside.
      Also bring him into nature...because in the city is too much going on & your cat may spook. I drive with a bike to bring my cats into nature.
      Sometimes I also use a Pet Buggy.

      Thanks Rita! I have two 14-month old cats (sister & brother) who I just started taking out for walks in our backyard with harness & leash. They love exploring the backyard and it’s their first time going outdoors so they are fascinated by everything. I tried taking them out together but they end up going in opposite directions so I’ve had to take them out one at a time. I would love to be able to take them out together so they could have more time outdoors and being together. I’d also love to be able to have them be outside with me when I’m gardening without having to worry that they’ll jump the fence into the neighbour’s yard. I know I need to spend a lot more time training them in basic skills (come when called, etc) and now that I have found your channel I will watch more of your videos. I seem to be able to access English captions on some of your other videos. I wondered if a short double leash would help to get them to walk together? Or retractable leashes? I am just using 6-ft nylon leashes so far. I probably will only or mostly only ever take them out in the backyard because we live in the city and don’t have a car.. unless I can train them to get comfortable in a bike basket. Thanks for your help and for all the valuable information you share on your channel!

      Thank you for your kind words.
      It is usually difficult to get untrained cats to listen well in a city/village enviroment (the own garden too). Many noises, smells (outdoor cats marking in the garden or around the fence etc, they don´t even have to be in sight, the smell is enough to distract a lot), dogs, strangers walking by etc.
      It`s better to go with untrained cats in nature areas (forest, wild meadows etc), far away from streets, any human dwelling (farms, houses etc.).
      But it`s not impossible to make untrained cats listen ok in the own garden...it just will never be 100%...more likely a 60-80%...depending on how much training is done & character of the cat.
      If a cat is already trained well, it isn`t a problem to get them to listen to nearly 100% in city/village areas.
      As for training them individually: Unfortunately that can screw up training / goal you want to achieve. Because they will get used to being outdoors alone (without other cat)...meaning they will even less pay attention to the other cat, because they learned not to need the other cat outdoors. So, it will make it more difficult to bond them outdoors, they won`t depend on each other/ walk together as a team.
      if you want them together outdoors, train them together outdoors....always.
      As for the leashes: 6ft is way too short for walking 2 cats...or even 1 cat to be honest.
      13ft (4m) is the minimum for 1 cat. For 2 cats I recommend 26ft (8m). And it should be 2 flexible/retractable leashes...not normal ones. For savety reasons (for gentle stop method if they bold, I explain that in another tutorial) & because it`s more practical.
      Only trained cats should be walked with normal long leashes (at least 26ft long).
      The flexible leashes need to be for the right size/weight of the animal...It is usually size SX or S for cats...check in description of leash for what kind of weight the leash is meant to be used. If you use size that is too big, the pull the of leash will be to strong.
      Also: Every cat should have their own leash...never tie them together or use a double leash (which are 2 leashes connected). Because that will make the cats hate walking together...because one pulls the other around. Cats really dislike getting their leash pulled, they usually react with defense behavior or fear.
      The leash is only for safety (them not climbing fence, crawling into holes etc), not for pulling them to follow the owner.
      Use very tasty treats (not normal dry food or something...something special, which they go crazy for...e.g. freeze dried meat treats...like chicken hearts, lamb hearts etc., or freshly cooked meat, chicken hearts etc.), motivate with friendly voice (if that`s possible for you), squat down to make yourself interesting & give them a lot of praise when they come (voice praise, cuddling & treats).
      In the garden: Train them when it`s the quietest outdoors....no neighbors outside, dogs walking around etc. The less distraction the better.
      But not at night/when it`s dark or twilight. Early mornings are best in my experience to have quiet in city/villages areas.
      As for managing their energy level: Playing with them indoors for 10-15min& exhausting them will help to keep them more mellow outdoors (less crazy running around etc). Just till they are trained well outdoors...then you don`t have to exhaust them before a walk.
      Walking them together: Use treats etc. to make them both follow you. If one doesn`t listen (doesn`t move in your direction), wait & try more. If a cat walks into another direction than you, stop with leash....but don`t pull. Just keep the cat were it is & keep calling/motivating it to come...with treats, squatting down etc.
      it`s practical to go always the same route in the beginning....so in the garden e.g. you go always go out of the door & then to the right & along the fence...around the whole garden. If they do that well, you can let them explore more the middle/the rest of the garden.
      As for them not jumping the fence: if the fence is jumpable for the cats, they will jump it, if you don`t supervise. Regardless how well trained they are...they might not jump it, if you are present/next to them (I trained my cats to do that), but there is absolutely no guarantee that they will not jump it, if you are not paying attention/further away. Cats aren`t dogs in that matter....they won`t respect a fence as a limit.
      If you want them to respect the fence, you need a tall enough fence that they can`t climb....and then you don`t need leashes to begin with.
      As for having the cats around when you do garden work: I don´t recommend it, if they can jump the fence. You won`t be able to pay attention to stop them, if they try & tying them with the leash to something won`t work either. Firstly that`s dangerous (they can get hurt, if they run & the leash ends & they get whiplash), second if a leash is completely tense, they can just go backwards & get out of the harness.
      So, either actively go on a walk with them (meaning always pay attention/have your eyes on them) or build a not climbable fence to have the freedom to do something else when they are outdoors.
      Bike rides: I trained my cats to get used to a bike basket....alternately you can use a bike trailer (pet bike trailers on amazon e.g. which can be changed into a pet buggy too, which is great for walking more than 2 cats).
      As a tip: If you can`t change your fence (because of your neighbors etc.), but still want freedom to do something else with the cats outdoors....you can build a catio/cat enclosure... it doesn`t only have a fence on 4 sides but also a secured roof. No cat can get out of that...and there is no limit to the size of something like that. On the internet you will find many different ideas how to build that.
      Best Regards, Rita

      thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I think a catio might be the best option for them, at least until I’m able to get them trained better to walk together.

      Sorry to hear, that some of your cats died of dog attacks. It's the best to go on walks, where no off-leash dogs are, at least at the beginning.
      You need to teach them to be calm, when they hear dogs barking. E.g. riding the bike around your area with them in a safe & closed bike basket or carrying them in a cat backpack. Give them food, when they hear a dog barking. Wet food is the best in the training. Dry food or treat stick don't work outdoors, especially not when cats are scared. Also give them a massage & calm them with words.
      When that works, you can start walking them on leash...but again, calm nature is here the best spot. Not around streets, strangers with dogs etc.

      @@dimmyliu722 Watch the video. There I say that cats shouldn't be walked in city or villages areas for the first couple of times. They need to be in nature / a forest to be trained first.
      Go out on days, when the ground isn't soaked with water...at least for the first couple of times.
      Cats get used to wet ground, but only if they are used to going outside on dry ground first & listen well.

      @@dimmyliu722 Thank you! Was happy to help. I have a lot of tutorials about training cats to walk on leash. Also what mistakes to avoid etc.
      You also find "live" training videos...e.g. from my 2 new cats, when they had their first walk as kittens etc.
      Everything is here: ruclips.net/p/PLz2-JM3q5bi5HOXzWspq3x3Wobga6A8c2
      How old is your cat?
      I can understand if it's irritating, when the training doesn't work as fast as you want...but you always need to remember not to take the actions of your cat personally. If a cat doesn't listen outdoors, it doesn't do it on purpose to upset you. The cat is either scared, stressed, overwhelmed by everything or simply doesn't understand what you want from him. It's not the cat's fault. Have patience for him.
      Also use the right tools...meaning a leash that is long enough. If the leash is too short, then the risk of you getting quicker impatient is a lot higher.
      You also need to train your cat to follow you on leash at home first...only if he does that very well, take him outside.
      And of course picking the right spot for the first walks to train him.
      I can tell you from experience, most cats will not listen in city & villages areas if they aren't trained in nature first. Some cats will even go in complete panic attack....my new Bengal was like that. She needed *months* of training in nature...only then she was ready to get walked around the house (it's very calm here, but still...was too much for her.).
      Now she walks very well around the house.
      Again, it's easier to be patient, if you try to understand why it isn't working & when you think about what *you* can do better to make it work better. When it comes to training cats...80% is the owner & only 20% is the cat. So, the owner has the most influence on how things work out.

    What are you doing in case of dogs?

    • @TravelersGarden_dgdr
      @TravelersGarden_dgdr 2 года назад +1

      Depending on situation (on or off-leash dogs, behavior of dogs), I keep them behind me or close next to me or I pick them up. Or I let them go into a cat backpack or pet buggy.
      One of my new cats, a Bengal cat, is quite prone to spook...so with her I always be rather safe than sorry & let her jump into a backpack or buggy, when off-leash dogs come.
      I have videos about this topic. Some show even live how I deal with meeting dogs.
      Look into my playlist about "Walking cats."

    How to protect cats from fleas
    While taking them in a walk ?
    And how to help them to stay clean ?

    • @TravelersGarden_dgdr
      @TravelersGarden_dgdr 5 лет назад +1

      I don't use any chemicals or other stuff to protect them against fleas. My cats had in our almost 10 years of going on walks only once fleas. They got it, when walking in a city-area (which we avoided from that point on). As long as you go into nature there is basically zero chance of getting fleas. (I don't let my cats get into contact with any other cats, dogs etc.)
      Cats clean themselves, so there is no routine for cleaning needed. Occasionally I clean their paws with warm water when it was muddy outside. If you want to help out your cats, you can take a cloth which is a little wet with warm water & clean them with that.
      If you want to get your cats used to water/bathing (with a stress-free method), you can do that too. I have 2 Tutorials about that. Look into the pinned comment for that. (I don't bathe my cats with shampoo or similar, I just let them walk in pure water once a week....but again, it's not really necessary, I do that because my cats started to enjoy being in water after they were trained. So, it's basically just for fun.)
