Feedback works exactly the same way a delay's feedback setting works. Just imagine it's a delay, but the length of the delay is the length of the looper. If you set feedback to any number under 100, the loop will fade out a little each time it plays. New sounds you play into the loop will take their place and also fade out over time.
A really important aspect of the looper that not many people are thinking about - you don't have to think linear anymore. In other words, creating a loop that has no definitive or has a more ambiguous start and end time. One can think of samples as circular - where there doesn't have to be a definitive start and end. For example, you can bring in a sustained note at the "end" part of a sample and wrap it back until the "start". Or you can record a silent loop and start adding synth and efx patches, pads, random notes....at any point in the cycle creating a loop that, as I said, has no definitive start and end time.
Definitely! I think it would be nice to have the option to turn that off though. It can be a problem when trying to lay down a loop of chops in a mute group, as the end of the loop doesn't cut the last sample. I've resorted to sampling silence and putting that in the mute group and hitting it at the end of the loop.
Looper is great for transitions when playing live other instruments. In my case : 1. I start playing a pattern on the digitact 2. Record on the SP looper the last 4 or 2 bars 3. Stop playing the Digitakt or lower the volume 4. While the looper on the SP plays I start playing another pattern on the DT with volume lowered by one or more elements and then raising it 5. Delete loop on SP and continue playing on Digitakt
They added this in update 3.0. Make sure you've updated but then when in pattern select screen, press copy, select pattern, press pattern select to leave pattern mode, and select pad to copy to, then hit copy again and it will bounce that pattern to the pad
3:00 You can use the bus FX all you want, but when you're overdubbing it's applying the FX to everything. You're working directly with the loop buffer, so if you turn on filter/drive it's going to start driving the buffer. If there's already something in the buffer you're going to get a dramatic gated effect if you don't time it perfectly with the length of the buffer. And if you don't shut it off after a single loop it'll degrade the buffer really bad on the 2nd pass. Because you're working on the buffer directly. That's why bouncing to a pad is so fast. Because you're not actually doing anything. Everything is modifying the buffer in realtime, and when you bounce to a different pad you're just copying the buffer.
Great tutorial fam, and I started using Looper yesterday with my OP-1 Field, and I love it!! I knew the bare bones basics, but I appreciate you breaking down all the little helpful things, thank you homie!!🙏🏾✊🏾💚
This thing is just so feature packed at the moment. I hope Roland just does a giant bug fix update in a while since There are quite a few bugs that need resolving still and new ones. That would make me enjoy the instrument sooo much more!
I create a hihat loop or a sample loop in the right bpm and start with this. So you don’t need the metronome. I know in the settings you can rout the click on your headphones only but this way you can start with a nice loop and go on with all the other sounds. Mute sample pads doesn’t work at the end of the loop. When the last chop is longer than the bar it will play overlab with the one of the loop (obvious because you don’t hit the next pad to cut it of like you have in the sequencer). I solved that by setting the last ssmple chop to gate. The rest of the samples can cut each other of.
I haven't tried any of this yet as I'm still learning my way around the unit. I got it in January but don't really get enough time to practice on it but the looper feature looks very useful. I'm really considering the J6 too as I know very little when it comes to chords and after having a play on one in a store I found it quite inspiring.
I really like RC505 (wish they had a portable one!) Is there a way to use the 404 looper like that? (Keep everything going, record other MIDI sync devices without stopping?)
Thanks SPVidz. I need to do the update once I get back from being out of town. Bummer that you can't apply effects in real-time to the loop. I was looking at getting a 505 just for the loop capture function so glad this update came.
Two things: 1. I think you need to just adjust the level of the kick drum "layer" to stop clipping, since each "layer" will be adding gain to the overall signal. 2. Great tutorial, but you forgot to mention that once your loop is all done AND playing inside the Looper, you can use Ctrl 1 to loop certain bars of the loop in real-time.
Does the looper work without metronome and without being locked to a BPM? I am really hoping to loop something without stopping the flow of what I’m playing, especially when jamming. Otherwise… why not just record in pattern mode?
A person could quickly build a whole song with the looper. Just save the different parts of the song to separate pads. You could even try out different arrangements this way...a great sketch pad!

I used the new looper feature... recorded a loop and then copied it to an empty pad. Jumped out of loop mode onto the pad i copied the loop to but i have significant volume loss on that pad when i play it/hit it. And not just that specific pad, but tried this with other empty pads, same result. My settings on the original loop feature is at 127 level, feedback 100%, play rate 100%, BUS looper, Routing MIX. Anyone else experience this? What am i missing.
Forgive my very noob question [still witing on delivery of my SP so learning what I can in the meantime] but why would one use the looper instead of just making a pattern the usual way?
Its a little faster and you can get more feel into it because there is no quantise. Its basically just another nice option to have. Pattern mode is still my go-to for putting down beats
Maybe this is a dumb conclusion but it seems like Pattern/Project BPM is not linked to Looper BPM, and that once using the Looper you cannot change the BPM via Tap Tempo. Is there a way to change this? I'd like to manually tap in tempo changes rather than adjust via the knob so I never have to stop looping... Maybe the box just doesn't do this. Strange that it doesn't because you COULD do this with the OG 404 Delay Loop technique... I'm so sad Roland seems to have completely killed that old trick...
When you bounr ur loop it creates a sample with the lioper bpm (hence the correct tempo), you can then play your bounced loop with bpm to sync it to a pattern tempo that's different from looper tempo

Aah! So it seems the recording buffer is also used for the undo / redo and overdubbing feature. Maybe they could make that one optional in system settings, that way it would double the recording time for the Looper. If that would be possible I would definitely go with that option, because undo doesn’t seem to be very useful in a live mixing situation (like mentioned in the other comment on changing projects with for instance the Digitakt or other external devices). Because for creating patterns or bounced samples I prefer the already available options including Skip Back. @BKDTR explored the looper on his channel, too. A discussion there made me look a little different to the overdubbing feature (would still prefer it as an option). The fact that it can be used as a ‘sample-based’ delay when keeping overdubbing activated and a lower feedback setting will gradually lower the volume on each cycle. This would become even more useful as an FX Looper… need to give that one a try. And in that case leaving the busses 3 and 4 activated shouldn’t always be a problem… 🤔
