Great reference to McMillan’s book ‘You only faster’. I read in 2013 the day before we ran Boston and it was when training for a marathon and understanding who I am as a runner really clicked. As you noted, I am an in the Endurance Monster category and love the longer runs, but had to force myself to do speed. Fortunately I now have come to really look forward to the speed work! I am excited to hear you signed up for Barcelona - I now have a training partner for Tokyo!!
My running background: a late entry into the sport as a Junior at a DIII College (Luther College). Coerced to join the team by a friend who was a coach. I had no real background and I recall clearly the day Coach Wettach said… “Craig, you’re not really good at anything, but you’re okay at a lot of things… how about you try the decathlon?” (That’s how I recall it going down anyway…might be blurred by the years that have passed!). Now I opt for endurance events… and rather enjoy it!
Thank you!! Good luck on your goals!! It’s not the glasses (I wish it were!) it’s an insta360 go 3s camera and you can overlay the stats from Garmin after. It’s so cool!
Thanks for commenting! And that’s a great suggestion. I did think about Eugene. But I ran that one in about 2017 (and loved it!) and I like to run new marathons if I can. There are so many good ones out there!!
I ran terribly! Injured in training so under prepared but felt obliged to run because I had a charity place and sponsorship. Got round but made injury worse and didn't run for a few years. I'd like to run London again one day to put things right
Did you know Dublin marathon started the year before London marathon and the organisers of London marathon came over to Ireland to find out how it was done. Also the new thing is that Oat milk is not supposed to be good for you and many people are going back to dairy again. This is the new advice. Then again they said eggs and coffee wern't good for you and then did a you turn on them too. :)
I didn’t know any of this! Thank you! I literally only just started on oat milk. Like, 2 or 3 weeks ago. I was having a few stomach issues and so I tried something new. I think you’re right though. They keep changing everything and I think as long as diet is varied and everything is in moderation then that’s all you can do ultimately! :)
Wasn't quick enough on the Internet to get into Manchester either. Going to do Newport (south Wales) April 13th. Can I improve on 4:05 at Manchester (April) and 3:56 at Chester (October) aged 62? Maybe with a bit more speedwork!
Yeah it’s like getting tickets for Taylor Swift! The good thing is that about 100,000 people will be running a marathon in the uk that day! (London and Manchester). You’re definitely going in the right direction!! Great work!! Sub 3:50 maybe? :)
That thumbnail just gave me a Don’t Dead Open Inside moment from the Walking Dead. If I forgot my watch I would have scrapped the whole session, which I know is ridiculous. If it’s not on Strava then it doesn’t exist.
What do you think about running 2 marathons 12 weeks apart? Some people say that we can carryover some fitness from the first marathon into the second … others say 12 weeks is not enough? BTW if you’re looking for potentially fast half (Josh Kerr runs it every year) consider San Diego Holiday Half on Dec 14 👍
@@DrProfX great question! And it definitely got me thinking about my own plan. If you want to carry over fitness then I think you actually need less time. Maybe 8 weeks. But it’s all contingent on you being recovered. Otherwise you probably need longer than 12 weeks at my/our age. I only had 8 weeks between Mesa and Carmel this year and that worked well. But I don’t think you can do that every time. Ohh San Diego is a place I’m desperate to go to!
@@global-runner Full! Looking to try and break 2:42 and grab a Berlin qualifying time. This series has been awesome to follow. Taking lots from your training plan and musings for my own training.
13th of April, Linz, Austria. Not the biggest race, not the nicest route. But it's the Austrian championship race next year, so there will be runners at your pace!
Hi GR Great video. I think you use Garmin so uploads to Strava can be automated though may be you find that too intrusive? And for me it is definitely the coffee. I am in Venice at the moment 😊
@@3Unique I never liked daily uploads to Strava. I found myself obsessing over other people’s training. But i have to say that my feed is full of runners from all around the world now and i love watching where everyone is running. So i may have to reassess that philosophy!

I’m glad I didn’t mischaracterise you mate!! :)
I'll be in Houston for the full. Ran the half last year and had a nice PR. Relatively flat with some nice long stretches.
Great! I hear good things about the course. And you must agree if you got a PR!

@@craig.a.murphy I love this!! Background is so key to all of this I think! Thanks for sharing yours. Appreciate it.

Did you consider Eugene marathon at the end of April? Better timing with Canadian winter, less travel time and usually good weather conditions.

Doing as I’m told! :)

Thank you!! I really appreciate that!
My first marathon was London 2003 too 😄
Love it! That was the year Paula ran 2:15 if I remember correctly?

That’s the fastest one I found! But it’s a touch early for me…!

Glenmore??
100 & 200 m will make your hamstrings scream, so be carefull!
I will be. The shorter ones are more stride effort than full-out. I’ve learnt my lesson. :)
