- Neil Treacy is joined by Johne Murphy on this week's RTÉ Rugby podcast, ahead of Ireland's Guinness Six Nations opener against England.
We look at some of the big calls made by Simon Easterby in his team selection, starting with Sam Prendergast who gets the nod to start at out-half.
Joe McCarthy misses out through injury at second row, replaced by Ryan Baird, and Murphy discusses how that could impact Ireland's game (9:30)
We also look at the other big call made on the right wing, as Mack Hansen holds off pressure from Calvin Nash (20:20).
Murphy gives his take on how Ireland are better placed to hit the ground running that they were in their scrappy Autumn Nations Series campaign (29:05) , while we also look at how Easterby's Ireland are likely to continue flirting with a high penalty and card count, as they look play the game right on the edge (32:16).

3 players 30 and over in England and France squads. 12 in Irelands. Just a couple of changes like Izuchukwu for Henderson and Osborne for Henshaw would make the squad look better
Ross.. shut up will you 😂 I’m sorry I was find it so funny when armchair experts come on and act as if they have the full coaching experience like the likes of the irish team do or any other team for that matter you do you know that the South African rugby team had the oldest team at the World Cup and they won, for something big tournaments and big moments you got an opinion you don’t actually get to say something as if it would be factual which is what you’re trying to do
@ and look at the variation in squads that SA have picked since the RWC. Other teams seem to be looking forwards in terms of their selection. We don’t seem to be to the same extent which could bite us when it comes to replacing Beirne, Henderson, Conan, Furlong, Aki, Henshaw, Lowe, JGP, Healy etc. or are they all going to be as good in 30 months time. History would suggest not.
I’d sooner have henshaw starting than out of the squad. Actually amazed he’s not starting on form. Osborne is good but he’s not on henshaws level yet or any of the starting back line for that matter
@@volleyunit I don't mind Henshaw over aki but Osborne gives better cover than either of those at 23
@ Osborne was outstanding in that 2nd test win in SA. Bok pundits were saying his aerial display was the best they'd ever seen.
He was dangerous coming into the line everytime he got the ball.
I'm not convinced Keenan offers enough in attack. He's very solid in defense but his aerial game isn't as good as some would have you believe.
Nothing against Hendersons legacy..... but when was the last time he played very well?
Agreed, bizarre selection. He's an average club player, maybe it's to get one Ulsterman in the team.
Agreed. Based on form I would've gone with Ahern.
To call the LOs when Ryan went off and to add that extra weight at scrumtime and mauls. He's a good ball carrier in the tight but he knocks the ball on too much.
Come on, boys, 🇮🇪 💚
I think debate is good and we all have opinions. Now though it has been chosen and we all need to back our boys. Blue/red is irrelevant. Green is all of our colour and that’s what we need to focus on now
Complete joke Nash isn't on the team.
Ok Pajo
Who would you take out of them team for Nash?
I really wish everyone would stop acting as if they have all access coverage to what happens in training or what happens behind the scenes we don’t know maybe he had a bad injury or a small injury and it’s pretend she going to get worse. Maybe he wasn’t training correctly you need to stop acting as if you know everything that’s going on.
@SmcdMcd-d2k well said, I'm no coach so I never would disagree with selections. I'd give my opinion prior but after that I know others know better.
Definitely in class form. Better than Mack. But Mack offers more outside of the typical winger role. Mack still not right since the injury
The two currys are gona target him big time
I really think we're not contenders this year, I think we'll be struggling against England on the opening day, to be honest, I can see Scotland getting a result from us the way we played in Autumn, and if we've lost a couple going into France, they could easily get a result against us. I'll be happy to be proven wrong, and rugby is a game of small margins, but that autumn performance left a lot more questions than confidence, not sure why the press seems so confident!
I seem to recall a certain Irish fly half (let's call him "Ronan O'G.") whose defence was so poor that he either had to be shifted to the wing or David Wallace had to babysit him every time the opposition targeted his channel. That weakness didn't stop Munster fans from worshipping him as a pure ledge etc, so are they really sure they want to go down the road of making the same criticisms of Prendergast? Sam's defence will certainly improve with time and is a small price to pay for the long-term gain of integrating him into the team ahead of the next world cup. We have a special talent here who deserves to be indulged
Mate the poor mouthing coming from the munster lads is mind bending. ANd the stuff they ignore is hilarious if it wasn't sad. Consider this, in 18 years munster have gone from top of europe, 2 stars, leinster were a joke, and in 18 years from the day declan kidney left for the top job, the munster brains trust in suites have run the team into the ground! in a mere 18 years, leinster go from joke to the best run team in the world with the best academy in the world and 4 stars! while munster have gone from top of the tree to frankly a sad case. Its not even a joke cos jokes are funny like. ANd all that the munster lads ignore, avoid snigger and point fingers everywhere at everyone rather than ya know... get together and ask... what are the guys in the suites doing? Nope... blame Leinster, blame the IRFU.. blame the media.... 🤣
Dagathire least munster have won urc.😂😂😂😂😂😂

I'm not Irish. I've watched both of them play for clubs and country. Crowley offers more than Prendergast atm and Crowley has only just turned 25 so not sure why you're bringing up the next world cup in the first place. Crowley will only be 27 by then and he still hasn't hit his ceiling. In his first season starting for Ireland, they won the 6 nations and drew a series in SA against arguably the best side of all time.
Prendergast plays for Leinster. It's much easier to look good playing for the most consistent side in Europe.
Look at Carbery, he was average at Munster but is ripping it up for Bordeaux.
@@DAGATHire You might want to ease off on all the 'best in the world' stuff there lad. Toulouse are the best team in Europe and have the stars to prove it. If Leinster win this year, great, but they'll have needed a Springbok and All Black to pull them over the line and still be a star behind. If they lose, it's the same old story of the best finalists in world.
Prendergast and Crowley are both excellent 10s and long term Ireland have options in at least that position thankfully because there are other positions on the pitch where it's far more unclear what the succession planning will be. I've mixed opinions on this selection. I thought Crowley would start because he's been there before and he's v capable, with Prendergast coming on at some stage depending on how close the game is. Prendergast is light, his body has a great deal to develop. I don't think his defence is notably weak at all. Given time, his physique will change.Right now he's an obvious target. I don't want to see him getting severely injured at this stage of his career. He's often times used as a second receiver by leinster, it's different at test level. That being said, if the game is getting away from him, Crowley can turn things around (like he did against Australia). Shoe on the other foot, I don't think Prendergast can close out or turn a game around *yet* . For that reason, start Prendergast but if the game is getting away from him, be ruthless and make the necessary change.
First game of the 6 nations is so hard to predict at the best of times. England are a very good side and they're still building. They were v close against NZ in November. If they click, they're good prospects for the championship. I think the game is going to be v tight. I hope we can do it, home advantage counts for alot. Should be a great game and I hoping both 10s have great outings for the next few months.
Prederast is great and will be, but now is not the time-he was not good against Australia or Bath. He’s not ready in my view.
Prederast 😂😂
Not a single Irish rugby pundit has pointed out the shortcomings in Prendergast's game and how Ireland will have to alter their game plan to make up for them. Prendergast is physically and defensively weak, in the Autumn they tried to hide him out on the win whenever the opposition had the ball. Are we going to have to do that again, will it mean pulling the centres across to cover the 10 channel potentially exposing us out wide? England have loads of pace and power and will absolutely target Prendergast, seeing as he was sat down by Finn Russell, he is going to have a far harder time with Marcus Smith. If Ireland do adapt their game just to accommodate him then they are saying that he is not good enough yet to be out there but they are going to play him anyway.
What are you talking about! That's all they ever talk about dave. They never let up questioning him, they constantly question him, They only reason they all collectively back him is because Andy Farrell is backing him. And the media are riding that same opinion COS its Farrell's opinion. I personally think its dangerous but not for the same reason as you. I think if Prendergast goes out and shoots the lights out. Crowley is basically going to be sidelined and second fiddle permanently. I would really really hope that BOTH of them get good amounts of rugby under their belt cos we have not gone into a world cup with 2 decent 10s in donkeys years.
just because Sam starts thats not a slight on Jack or even frawley.this game is swings and round abouts.its not a science and jack may well start more in the future.the important thing is both and frawley sre quality tens.look at england it was farrell, ford and now marcus. back in the day there was ward and cambell and then rog and humpreis and rog and johnny.i am a munster fan and i wish jack started but this can change, sam may be exposed as the six nations is a step up on november so i feel one has to see the big picture.no one owns the jersey so best wishes to sam.
Spot on. I'm not Irish and I've been saying the same, there's zero criticism of his obvious weaknesses, the term 'PrenderGOAT' is being thrown around now Smh. Prendergast was ragdolled on more than one occasion against La Rochelle. He always loses ground in the tackle, handing momentum to opposition sides. Crowley is a brilliant impact tackler. Prendergast was also blocked down twice in that game and threw an intercept that was disallowed. England will target his channel all day this weekend and they'll know he labours and telegraphs his kicks too much.
My prediction was Ire by 2pts but I could see England edging this one, especially seeing McCarthy is now out. He's badly needed against a physical English side. I can see Crowley being brought on early in the 2nd half and showing he's still no. 1 OH for Ireland. Prendergast started against Aus and Ire were losing when he got subbed so I'm not sure why he gets to start seeing as Ireland won after Crowley came on.
I do think this is a real possibility. England's selection of both Curry brothers suggests they're going after him, as well as trying to slow down Ireland at the breakdown. Not positive it will work, but certain this is part of the game plan. *I'm an England fan by the way
Munster fans tears. Delicious

Yeah they pick players from a team that is unbeaten all season rather than average mid table nobodies, imagine that.
