I’ve got a dumb story about over weight on a bumper pull. So I was hauling an decent sized mini excavator (I think it was 15,000lbs don’t quote me it was a while ago) 20 or so miles to go wash it off before returning it to the farmer I borrowed it from. I was pulling it on a 30 ft tilt bed bumper pull behind a Ford F-150. On my wag back an officer sitting in the weigh station pulled out and pulled me over for a tail light out on my trailer. Didn’t even mention that I was pulling the whole setup with a Ford F-150. Almost no one cares about bumper pulls. I really enjoy watching your videos, and learn a lot from them. Would you be willing to do a video in the future covering trailer loading, towing, and safety? I’m new to having a truck and would be interested.
The last time I talked to the CHP motor carrier unit the guy told me that the law changed recently and now anything combo (truck and trailer) over 10k requires a CA number and DOT if for hire. I asked more about it because that would mean every landscaper running around would need that and he said yes. I guess I’m glad we live here where it’s small because that’s ridiculous.
Laws differ from state to state. In some states if you have a pickup 3/4 ton or bigger its automatically plated as commercial even if you dont own a trailer and its just ur daily. Another example is in some states you have to have a CDL to haul a Camper over a certain length, while in others its related to weight ratings. And in some states you can drive and operate a "Toter Home" with a 50+ foot trailer and be grossing close to 80k with a regular drivers lic.... In other states you can triple tow Recreational vehicles. like a truck pulling a camper pulling a boat. Everyone is an expert on the internet... LOL
Dirt perfect has an indiana commercial vehicle inspector series that explains all of it really well. In indiana you can drive a semi and haul if you own all of it without a cdl but probably only if your not making money.
Things are so much different put west it's crazy to me, around here the dot would never even pull anything but a semi over, we run a f350 dually with a 30ft goodneck with tandems under it and haul a 650 John Deere dozer and a 14,000 tractor all the time, idk what the laws say but they're not bad on us here, California really blows my mind seems hard to be a working man out there
The only thing I haul anymore is when I'm lucky enough to find some 100+ year old wood to make guitars from. In the past I've got some old mahogany piano's from the mid-1800's, various logs from old log homes and other maple, ash and even pine from old furniture. The biggest score was 2- grand pianos, in really rough shape, that had Brazilian rosewood sound boards! A close second was 4- 9 foot tall pocket doors that were 2 1/2" mahogany from the 1700's. Gibson's prized '59 LP Bursts were made from very similar stock. 8) Don't think I could live on the other coast where you are. Couldn't deal with all those Dem-tards. Around here we watch out for and support each other. That cameo of Callahan a week ago or so was cool. He's getting big fast!! 8) LOL --gary
As long as they are not stealing or collecting welfare and they are safe and their equipment is safe I don't care. These new trucks can haul over 10k so easy. Old laws need to be updated.
The trailer has to be rated for the weight they're hauling also, and there are quite a few people who don't know the safe and right ways to haul heavy equipment
I have to risk it for the biscuit every day. I'm type 1 diabetic I'm not allowed to get a class A in California so every time I haul my mini ex or haul cattle I'm "breaking the law"
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe they can't weigh live stock because the move around in the trailer and they would never get a weight. As long as your trailer is rated under 10k
@@nickp786 I'm lucky enough not to know humboldt county doesn't have much for scales and they haven't messed with me while hauling cattle yet. I would de rate to a 10k trailer but all my trucks are flatbeds so I'm already illegal anyways
@@nickp786 Oh make no mistake, DOT will weigh cattle trailers. I had a step dad that ran bull haulers. Broke more than a few scales that way.
It’s definitely clutch to have your own place to dump, but it’s crazy cause wood chips all the dumps take for free cause they turn it to mulch and they’re making good ass $$$. But, yours is perfect, free, re-use it, be done with it 💪🏽 Appreciate all the information, I know every state is different, but it’s all useful 🤙🏽
Not sure but I think there's a distinction between hualing for money and hauling to jobsite where you make money. It's been a while so I'm not sure. Also ag laws are different. When we haul farm equipment to do our ag work we are exempt. CHP at a seminar said he would not stop us and it would not hold up if he did. It might be interesting to know where that line is. Fingers crossed that's for the heads up.
Guy bought a corn head out of state. His farm truck (1 ton dually) with his tandem dually GN trailer. Which is legal without CDL, DOT, ELD… within 150 air miles of home. But the @7000lb corn head he bought for farm use. He got stopped 40 miles beyond his “range”. Big fines, parked, had to hire CDL to drive it @50 road miles… But a half ton pickup, bumper pull 10k trailer.that barely might be legal with corn head. Instead that rig could handle 3x the weight safely. He gets fined, tickets….
haha i agree with your trailer theary! When I run my 15kGVWR bumper pull technically i need a class A cdl to pull the damn thing because over 26001 lbs. But like you said its so low key haha it doesnt get noticed. goose neck is like a huge red flag though lmao.
CHP considers guys hauling their own horses to a roping competition for hire. If there is any possible way for the person to make a penny its considered for hire. They go in waves when they crack down on it too. People can skate by for a few years then all of a sudden everyone is getting nailed in a 6 month window. Just like guys with service boxes. You could go years and not be messed with then the next thing you know they're stopping every service truck and putting it on scales.
Technically anything other than the stock bed makes it a commercial vehicle in DOT eyes and is subject to go across the scales. This is information that was told to me by a highway patrol DOT cop.
@@manny53o they told me it was based off weight unless the bed was for hauling cargo. Essentially like uhauls. @@johnnysouza5601 according to the DOT officer who taught the class it doesn’t matter if it is a Toyota pickup as soon as you alter the bed it becomes a commercial vehicle. Who really knows what the laws are. I guess each officer interpits the law differently just depends on their mood 😂
@@AlwaysBored123 it is and thats why I left it 2 years ago. The politicians there have no common sense . I worked in agriculture which is a major industry in California. The state is literally pushing farms out with all the regulations they put out. They give them no water, changed labor laws even though farmworkers pleaded for them not to, banning a lot of older diesels, and a they were trying to bill farmers for the ground water they use even though most deeds include mineral rights and the farmer pays to install, repair, and maintain their wells not the state.

Here in Georgia I see landscaping companies running a 250 / 2500 pulling a trailer with company name all over the truck...no DOT number. They are kinda invisible, but illegal just the same. There's one I see pulling a tractor on a GN trailer...no numbers. With my flatbed F350 and GN trailer, I run as legal as you can get even when I'm hauling my personal stuff. I have a nice story. Context is im 17 currently and have been working for my fathers masonry company for 3 years now. I do all the basic things like make mortar, carry bricks and blocks, and operate and work on machinery. My favorite thing to do is tow machinery and materials ; skidsteers, mini excavator, Pallets of block, brick, and lumber some times. My father started teaching me to tow when I was 15 1/2 when I had my permit. I started on an old 99 F350 with the 7.3 PS and a 5 speed manual. Personally my favorite truck. Time for the actual story one day I was transporting maybe 16k lbs lbs of trailer weight 1 pretty large bobcat mini excavator, mud box, and a pallet of brick. After a while I pull up to a sheetz to fill the truck and mini excavator. I play Clash of clans on my phone and I look up and there’s a state trooper looking at the truck, mini excavator, then me. He walks up to me and says “nice truck”. At this point I’m sweating bullets because I just turned 17 (about 6 months ago) and on a limited provisional liscense towing a good amount of weight on gooseneck. I respond “Thankyou” put up the fuel pump and book it out the gas station. Now that think about it I was acting really suspicious) and surprised he didn’t address me on the load.
Talking about the side hustle I don’t know what it is but I’ll talk to some one about picking up a pile of brush and tell them a $100 and they stutter and look at me like in stupid or something I just never feel like I can get what a job is really worth nobody under stands that you have to do something with that load when you leave there place.
It all varies by state. For me if I don’t do business across state lines you just need a truck and trailer qualified for and registered for the weight up to 26,000lbs. No CDL, no DOT numbers involved. It’s interstate commerce vs intra. Not for hire is useless, or a flag to say I’m trying to pull a fast one. Some other states do let you go over 26,000 for personal use. I believe there is also a national exemption for class b motor homes.
In Ohio I can haul grain in a semi all day without having a CDL. The farmer I worked for a few years back has never had one and he's been at it for 50+ years.
Ohio farm boy here agrees. Shit we used to haul grain wagons with our pickups. Sometimes wed have to hook two trucks together to do it. Nobody ever gave a shit.

It's kinda a dick move but at the same time, he pays his fees for the licenses and tags so why would he want someone getting away with it when he wasn't able to
Here in NY the DOT fucks with all commercial vehicles, semi down to commercial plate 1/2 tons. Yet if your jethro with a s10 with 4 different bald tires that looks like a hermit crab with 5 fridges held on with bailing twine on top of misc other scrap or a multi million dollar company your good to go…..
I want a little gooseneck rated at 9999lbs so I don't have to worry about CDL if I need to take it to CA. My Megacab is only rated at 10500lbs even though it was a dually which is pretty low. Here in TX, I wouldn't need to worry about a CDL even with a 14K dump trailer. Now it is a SRW long bed Megacab which would make a gooseneck nice in terms of maneuvering. It would be cool to put a tent on the neck or a truck camper to make it a crawler hauler. Also need some toys to load on said trailer that does not exist.
@@blaketerry8569 Federal no... there are only a few rules that the Feds lay out and they all revolve around being under 26k, passenger capacity or hazmat. If your truck is over 26k GVWR, CDL. If the GCWR is over 26k and the trailer GVWR is over 10k, CDL. More than 15 passengers, CDL. Hazmat placards needed, CDL. Tennessee only follows these bare minimum Fed rules. Some states require a CDL as soon as you hook up a trailer having a GVWR higher than 10K. They will pull you over in a heartbeat though for not having DOT numbers. You need TN DOT number for intrastate and US DOT numbers for interstate commerce with only a GCWR of 10k+.
Okay I live in Oregon and my understanding is if ur truck has a gvwr of 9k and ur trailer gvwr is 14k the total is only 23k under 26k it’s legal right?
So in Maine as far as I have learned I don’t need dot number if I stay within 100 air mikes. I need my business name and I’ve got to stay under 26,000. For my class c license I can tow a trailer weighing more than 10k as long as the gcvwr is 26k or less. I have two f350 drw trucks at 14k. I recently bought a 14k trailer which the tags add up to 28k so that means I should have a class a. Interesting though the state requires you to test in the truck you will operate, and they won’t let a f350 run the road test. Soooo not class a truck don’t need class a, just keep it under 26k 😆. I may buy a srw f350 rated to 11,900 and then I’m definitely legal. Just what I’ve deduced not certain I have it all correct. 👍❤️🇺🇸
14k single wheel tandem axle gooseneck no numbers or anything with my 2500 Cummins. I stay under the weight limit and don’t like for money just my personal stuff.
If I haul grapes for my family business, does that count as commercial driving? We turn the grapes into wine and then sell it... does that count as commerce? Driving a 14,000lb F350 Flatbed with a 9,900lb Deckover.
By us you wouldn't need a CDL if you're under 26k combo regardless of trailer weight as long as truck is under 10k. What sucks is you can't get a class A tractor trailer license without an air brake endorsement so if you pull a combo without air brakes you can't get your license in that setup!
I think combo should be what it weighs at time not rated weight. Texas your good as long as under 26k. I don’t understand why I should have cdl because my 24ft rated 14k and I pull it with hd2500 with flat bed like grandmas. Always love the information.
You can contact the trailer manufacturer to get a lower gross weight rating plate if you don't haul the maximum weight on it. Just don't get caught with it over the rating plate gross weight even though the trailer can handle it.
@@tiredoldmechanic1791 I am in Texas rating doesn’t matter as long as current weight under 26001 lb. I know people hauling empty in other states trailer weighs 4K but rated 10000 and they got ticketed and trailer impounded no cdl.
@@richardharvey8939 That's when they need to have the trailer manufacturer provide a rating plat of less than 10,000 pounds. They will usually do it because it doesn't matter to them whether it's 10,000 or 9,990 but it can really matter to some people in some states.
@Steven Seagull we may be saying same thing I am referencing different licensing in different states. Their classes and designations. Just think it’s stupid they are not more universal. I drive rvs all over for friends and drop them off or pick up and have to watch some states really close. In Texas I drive a Volvo semi pulling custom triple axle fifth wheel and it’s ok. I take it to Arizona regularly and even their state troopers have told me different rules. I pick up new trailers for friend here but they are made in Oklahoma. I pull double bumper pulls all the time. Texas says it’s fine Oklahoma troopers say it’s ok as long as truck registered in Texas. Weird.
The VA State Police DOT guys went ape shit on landscaping companies for exceeding 10K on a trailer or those that run higher than 26k. The only work around are travel trailers or guys with toyhaulers that have living space, and then only to 15K. My F650 super truck weighs in just under 17k, so I can only haul a trailer registered to haul 8K.
CA is one screwed-up place. Hauling your own car using your own truck & trailer, regardless if you plan to sell the car the next day or next year, in no way, shape, or form can be considered making money with the truck. If you break down in your car on the side of the road and go get your truck to haul it home and decide to sell it rather than fix it, the truck is not earning any revenue.
you are never obligated to self incriminate, anything you say or give to the officer is what he/she will use against you...even drivers license, registration or insurance....last 3 times I gave the officer nothing but an education and drove away..... here are things people should know....if they have pulled you over and you are not free to leave, YOU ARE UNDER ARREST.....your only question should be "Am i free to leave?" if they say no, "have I been accused of committing a crime" " "crime" MUST INVOLVE a victim or it's not a crime....the police officer filing the charge when they were not personally harmed is a conflict of interest...being paid to be a complainer is nothing free people would allow from government. or if they ask about numbers..... what facts do you hold that suggest I'm making money or you assuming my guilt and violating the due process of law?"here is the root of the law.... If you are making money dependent upon on how fast you can run roadways....I agree, there are a LOT OF RULES that you must follow... if you are responsibly traveling as a free human being from your private property to your friend or member of your networks private property exchanging private property or compensation for your time....that sounds like something that is outside of state regulation. especially if you align with your church instead of the state and offer it as a service rather than a business. Working locally by reputation is where busyness will thrive. No permitshun required because YOU OWN YOU.
A ( Not For Hire ) sticker Is not a matter of making money, it’s a matter of hauling your own stuff. You are not a company that hauls freight or goods for someone else ( common freight) . At least that’s the way it was explained to me. I don’t run a ( not for hire sticker) , but in the grading Buisness I think you should. DOT #’s and CDL license would depend on the vehicle and weight.
Federally anything under 26,001 lbs GVWR doesn't require a CDL for personal use. You can exceed that with RVs. Local jurisdictions is what you generally have to worry about, they can come up with some crazy requirements. WA state one cannot down rate to get under 26000 if truck and trailer add up to more than 26000 requires cdl as for not for hire i think its more for you to let others know that you are not a trucking company you are doing your own thing have a local guy that has a older international 5 ton tilt deck that he hauls hay on and farm tractor of his own and he has not for hire so people dont ask him to move there stuff

I really enjoy watching your videos, and learn a lot from them. Would you be willing to do a video in the future covering trailer loading, towing, and safety? I’m new to having a truck and would be interested.
In Nevada, you need to be sure you register your equipment for the weight your hauling. This includes horse trailers as well.
Like a boss you guys do awesome work
I only put dot numbers on my semi trucks. On the one ton pick ups and below we stick magnetic business name but no dot numbers.
Things are so much different put west it's crazy to me, around here the dot would never even pull anything but a semi over, we run a f350 dually with a 30ft goodneck with tandems under it and haul a 650 John Deere dozer and a 14,000 tractor all the time, idk what the laws say but they're not bad on us here, California really blows my mind seems hard to be a working man out there
Love My farm tags. Great video
That chipper is a beast.
Way I look at it is that , it's not my ticket so worry about what someone else is doing.
I have to risk it for the biscuit every day. I'm type 1 diabetic I'm not allowed to get a class A in California so every time I haul my mini ex or haul cattle I'm "breaking the law"
same here. sometimes you gotta take chances in life to get ahead.
He would do like tanker trucks do when they set up the portables, when he would pull on he would jab the brakes a bit instead of a nice easy stop and get the cattle (or liquid with tankers) to all shift forward. Broke more than a few scales that way.
Nice video and awesome work you 2 😬💪🏻👍🏻
It’s definitely clutch to have your own place to dump, but it’s crazy cause wood chips all the dumps take for free cause they turn it to mulch and they’re making good ass $$$. At most for a full load of a dump trailer (just like yours) $45, one place it’s $20, all day, everyday.
Big fines, parked, had to hire CDL to drive it @50 road miles…
But a half ton pickup, bumper pull 10k trailer.that barely might be legal with corn head. Instead that rig could handle 3x the weight safely. He gets fined, tickets….

I only git weighed once but it wasn't long after I got that truck at work so it had hardly any tools in it yet. California is such a s*^thole I feel for you guys.
I 100% agree with this video.

Nice content! I like the dump trailer with the tilt on the chipper. I chipped most of the trees on highway 101 on the cal trans emergency project with the Peterson grinder. i call the dot cops creeper cops-ha here back east. yrs back we had a bunch of fellas who went around and did custom interior work on new houses, they no name or address or a dot number on their trucks, along with the tandem enclosed trailer they pulled full of carpenter tools. boy did they get busted big time. so yeah ur right on all accounts. was funny as them fellas all thought they was getting away with it-but it caught up to them in big fines.
Here in Georgia we have a farm exemption that allows people to operate vehicles that would normally require a cdl as long as its for "ag purposes" it's intentionally vaguely worded to help out the little guys. Only down fall is that it limits you the state of Georgia

Were talking real life problems here lol
I love living in a state where its simple anything over 26k is cdl thats it. 👌 I could have a 12k truck 14k trailer and not need it here.
Federal law falls back to if its for business purpose then gotta have cdls. Don’t ask me how I know. Found out the hard way to say the least
What state?

It depends on where you are georgia eats up pick up trucks with any dump trailer or equipment

@@VBELTandSON if you’re ever in Texas near Austin or need help, let me know.
By us you wouldn't need a CDL if you're under 26k combo regardless of trailer weight as long as truck is under 10k. What sucks is you can't get a class A tractor trailer license without an air brake endorsement so if you pull a combo without air brakes you can't get your license in that setup!
In Mn air brake is a separate endorsement no different than a tanker or haz mat so one can have a class A without having an air brake endorsement.
Don't need any of it here in Virginia
I think combo should be what it weighs at time not rated weight. Texas your good as long as under 26k. I don’t understand why I should have cdl because my 24ft rated 14k and I pull it with hd2500 with flat bed like grandmas. Always love the information.
You can contact the trailer manufacturer to get a lower gross weight rating plate if you don't haul the maximum weight on it. Just don't get caught with it over the rating plate gross weight even though the trailer can handle it.

@@richardharvey8939 That's when they need to have the trailer manufacturer provide a rating plat of less than 10,000 pounds. They will usually do it because it doesn't matter to them whether it's 10,000 or 9,990 but it can really matter to some people in some states.
@Steven Seagull some states require 10000 pds and up even pulling empty trailer if it is rated over that. Regardless actual weight at time of stop.
