- San Benedetto? San Benedeeetto? In this episode Bruce taste tests water!!
No actually with the temperatures rising this time of year where I live, we're going to make a classic patio sipper to beat the heat. A Rickey. A Lime Rickey to be more precise. This one is really easy. 3 ingredients and your done! For such a simple cocktail it actually has some history to it dating way back to the 1800s. It didn't start out as the type of Rickey we know and drink today. Next time you are entertaining...(or when it's deemed safe you can entertain wherever you live) whip up a bunch of Rickeys to cool down your guests. Cheers!

This guy is a character. If he was a local bartender I’d be at his bar everyday
Same
Dude reminds me of the old bartender at the local Moose Lodge. Abuelo used to make the strongest damned drink you ever had and made them well, however you had to listen to his stories as well as he made this drink. So you might be waiting for 20 minutes but I tell you this, even Mickey Mantle would be under the table with one of his drinks.
Oh the shenanigans that would ensue... ha
@@BarTalkCocktails your a legend my friend new favorite channel
Its like the late 1980's or early 1990's...lol. Im guessing that was this guys prime years. What a time 😂
I came only to see how to make some cocktail syrups, but I stayed for Bruce's personality. This man is so radiant, so charming and fun to watch.
couldn't agree more :)
Gee thanks 😊
@@BarTalkCocktails badoit is a good sparkling spring, less aggressive than perrier
Yea, Bruce is a cool daddy-o
Fond memories. I'm 69 now, but I remember being around 11-12 making Lime Rickeys for my folks in the summer when they sat outside.
I also use to serve up drinks to my folks and their friends. Not a common practice anymore but maybe that’s for the best. Ha
@@BarTalkCocktails My kids are 9 and 12 and can open up a bottle of champagne and make simple drinks. They have to earn their keep some way.
A real bartender making cocktails with no loud television and music to drown out the ambience, love it.
"How dare you interrupt my Lime Rickey!" - Mr. Burns
😂
How does he only have 38k subscribers?? He’s a TRUE bartender with years of experience under his belt.
Hey Matthew thanks for the comment. Slowly but surely. We’re getting there. Thanks for watching!
Becoming like Bruce is now one of my life goals. :)
Ha, you can do better!
Kidding. Cheers!!
I’d be at his bar any day for his history lesson on drinks and character.
Thanks!
I subscribed, he’s like the cool grandfather anyone would want🤣🤣🤣
Bruce, I'd have to be pulled away from your bar kicking and screaming...I could listen to you for hours. I just found my new YT binge. Cheers!
Thanks Maryann! Glad you’re enjoying it.
I'm so glad the algorithm put you in front of me. Not only are you a great storyteller, but you remind me of my grandfather, who was also a phenomenal storyteller, singer, and drink-maker extraordinaire. ❤ I miss him. He's been gone 20 years, but he still sings and dances in my heart. Thank you for making me smile and think of him today. 😊
He’s like the Alton brown of liquor I love this man 😭😭 also my drinks have gotten much more tasty and enjoyable because of this guy
Thank you for the lovely comment! Good Eats was definitely an inspiration for the show. Glad you are enjoying it.
Love the stories Bruce. Lime Rickeys remind me of home, and my misquided youth. A local burger place used to sell Lime Rickeys - Sprite, fresh lime and a couple squirts of grape syrup over that real small barrel sized ice, the kind that would eventually melt enough to get sucked up the straw. Loved me as a kid so much so as as high schoolers we used to drive the drag, get those then top them off with vodka. The days of misguided youth! Great video Sir. Thanks for bringing back some memories. Stay well.
Thanks for sharing that David. Funny how certain things bring us back to our past.
I’ve been enjoying Gin Rickeys for many moons. Such a fantastic summer cocktail. Who knew we’d get an impromptu sparkling water tasting?! 😅
I prefer with soda with gin and I like revisited with whisky but I try the originals in Italy that whisky jack Daniel's is é fine whisky.. Can you suggest an alternative to whisky? Thanks for the riky story. Riky And also the name of my dog
Jack is good, but whiskey is whiskey. To use an alternative to whisk(e)y would be to make a completely different tasting drink. You could make a Rickey with a nice rum like Bacardi 10 Year Old Gran Reserva, or an inexpensive Appleton Estate V/X Signature Blend. It wouldn't be a Rickey, but I'm sure it would be tasty. Add some fresh mint and now we're entering Mojito territory. Ha. You could even try subbing out the whisk(e)y for brandy. It's always good to experiment. Say hi to Riky for me. Cheers!
Don't change. I could listen to your banter all day This was fun. Will be making Rickeys for Independence Day.
Awesome! Happy 4th!
Bruce, I love the history of these cocktails. I really enjoy hearing that. I definitely prefer the sparkling water, to the club soda, as well!! This is a terrific, super refreshing cocktail!! Awesome video!!
Thanks Christine! Cheers
Always nice to see an upload from you Bruce
Thanks! Keep checking back lots more on the way.
Yeah Bruce is a awesome cocktail maker he speaks my language
After seeing this video I’ve started drinking Rye Whiskey, I’ve now become a connoisseur of Rye Whiskey & mineral waters. I’ve been experimenting with different flavored waters and this has become my go-to cocktail! ❤ I add a dash of simple syrup (lately rose syrup 😋) and it’s so refreshing, especially living in Miami!! Thanks, Bruce!!
Bruce , that was fun, I especially liked story time.
I love me a good story. 😜
I used to love a drink similar to this we called "alcoholics koolaid". In a tall glass we'd fill with ice, squeeze in a big lemon wedge, a big lime wedge, a shot of Bicardi Limon, a shot of Tanqurey Malacca, then top off with tonic water. Enjoy, and be careful, they go down easy.
I’ll have to give that a go!
You’re really good at telling a good story.
Thanks! Practice makes perfect and I love sharing good history.
Replace gin with 2oz vodka,
replace club soda with Bitter Lemon mixer,
add the lime juice!
Then it wouldn't be a Rickey would it?
@@malibuconv1968 How about 'Lime Richelle'?

Bruce, my man, you're my new favorite bartender I've never had :D You bet I'll be watching for more of your videos. As for the Rickey, I've no gin on hand but I do have some bourbon (Wild Turkey 101) and this weekend I plan on a little experimentation. Thanks for the demo and all the background on the nuts and bolts of drink-building.
Thanks for the comment John. Happy experimenting and have a wonderful weekend.

The official drink of the Diabetes support group 🍹
For sure. I love a gin rickey with Topo Chico mineral water.
@@blacklagoon2005 Second that. Also Nixie Lime Ginger sparkling water is great. Tastes like a Moscow mule without the diabetes.
Good stuff. Here in New England the lime Rickey is also a traditional summertime non-alcoholic drink, carbonated water and sweetened lime juice/syrup (some places use fresh lime). There are other flavors like raspberry-lime but plain lime is the most popular. Harder to find one these days but you still see them at places like ice cream stands, clam shacks, etc.
That’s neat, thanks for sharing and tuning in.
Stopped for a good lime drink recipe, subscribing for great content in general.
Story time is great and Bruce is great at making a simple drink recipe video a fun watch.
Keep it up Bruce, I have a lot of recipes to catch up on.
Thank you for the lovely comment! Cheers and enjoy the channel.
Nice. Always wondered what a Lime Rickey was. I like that you did it two ways. Really liked the sided quest into different bubbly waters.
Enjoyed the listen. The drinks sound thirst quenching delicious. And I absolutely dig the green shirt and tie.
Wow! A real bartender! Rather than a young pretty lady with her latest cosmetic surgery busting out of her shirt and no clue how to mix a drink, how refreshing!
Wow! That sounded sour.
As a novice bartender I've enjoyed seeing your methods and how you work. I worked at a Legion and know I'm behind the bar at an exclusive private club, have to step up my game.
Appreciate you tuning in, cheers!
Whiskey drinkers are just on another level. Gotta try this
Give it a go, it won’t disappoint.
When Prohibition came around the Lime Rickey left DC and came here to New England where it became the Raspberry Lime Rickey, a popular nonalcoholic drink you can still find in some places.
As a teenager I worked in the Massachusetts ice cream chain Brigham's, we sold lime rickeys and raspberry lime rickeys only in the summer. It's my go-to drink now with gin, although I like mine sweet, I hope it catches on enough to where I can order it in bars, I don't like having to explain drinks.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing that, I’ll have to give the raspberry version a go- but I’ll be adding alcohol for sure. Ha
@@BCThunderthud My mom used to get them from Brighams as a teenager. It's a great New England tradition that deserves to be popular again.

Thanks for the breadcrumb trail of people no one else knows.
As a kid a cherry lime ricky (with water) was the best drink in the world. Haven't thought about it for decades but may experiment with it with something a bit stronger.
Bruce just seems like the coolest guy to sit down with and shoot the shit while having a refreshing cocktail. He should have wayyyy more subscribers!!! Just made his Tom Collins and it was awesome. It’s in my rotation of top drinks.

Never was a gin drinker in my younger years but now that I'm older, this lime Ricky sure is refreshing
It’s a great summer sipper!
Any drink with gin, lime, and something fizzy is a great summer drink.
Man you are incredible! I have had a gin rickey, but don't remember the rye, sounds really good. Also going to try one with Calamity Gin from TX using native Blue Bonnet flowers. Cheers, won't remember this in the morning

I never knew the original Rickey had rye! This why I love this channel!
Thanks for the love, cheers!
I make mine with lime flavored gin and lime flavored Le Croix. Slightly bastardized, but uber refreshing!
I’ll have to give that a try.
I like the Rye myself being a fan of SOCO & Lime. Gin is always great as a summertime elixir.
I'm a huge fan of gin mixed with the San Pellegrino orange or lemon carbonated juices. Used to be on special at Costco years ago but they got replaced by those ugly La Croix seltzers.
It sure is!
That sign is Awesome 🤣
Heh 😏
I just made my first Vodka Rickey today, it really is a refreshing drink. Thanks for the idea.
You’re so welcome. Glad you gave it a go.
Hi Bruce, you're a very nice storyteller, passionate and attractive... This drink is very beautiful to watch and very tasty too, I suppose... As a French, I'm proud you choose Perrier... 😉 Keep on entertaining us....
I will! I love to entertain and share cocktail history, I’m only getting started. Lots more to come.
A Canadian Lime Ricky is Shoplifted Soda, Lime juice in one of those squeezy bottle thingies, Canadian Whisky, preferable Liquormans, and it's served in a half plastic soda bottle or cat food bowl, garnished with some dope leaves and a sprinkling of cigret ash. purfect
I just realized how to drink has a dad and its BarTalk&Cocktails
😂😂
The best hot weather drink I ever had was Drambui & and Seltzer on the rocks with akafier lime leaf in it. It was in Thailand and a British fellow who had befriended us young Marines on maneuver there.
It was refreshing and lite to sip and you could sit in the bar and drink them all day
Okay, Bruce. I'd heard of the Gin Rickey, of course, but I never tried one. You got me to make a Gin Rickey, and I found out that it's a really excellent drink which I've had a couple of time since I first saw this video. (Not surprising, really, since I was already a guy who frequently drinks seltzer with lime juice.) The lack of sweetener makes it a great thirst quencher, and I think the Gin Rickey might win a showdown against the venerable Collins for summer thirst quenching supremacy. Plus, think of all that vitamin C.
Can’t go wrong!
If the original Rickey was made with old Tom Gin wouldn’t it have some sugar in it aswell? Not a whole lot I can imagine but I’ll have a few different ones this summer just to try. It’s hard to get some classic old Tom these days...
You're probably correct. Old Tom and Holland gin are typically sweeter, but not always. Some Old Tom-style gins didn't have any sugar added to them. No one knows exactly what they tasted like back in the late 1800s. I'm not sure why Harry Johnson recommended Tom or Holland gin considering that dry gin was available in the US when his recipe was printed. It might be that Old Tom and Genever are both somewhat malty in flavour and provide a crossover for whiskey drinkers to appreciate gin. And, seeing as the very first Rickey was made with whiskey, that might explain it. Or, maybe, just maybe, that's all Harry Johnson had on his bar at the time. Ha. Cheers!
This channel never disappoints!!
Thanks Joseph!
Excellent épisode, j'ai adoré!
Merci!
So, so, great! Such a quality channel. Love when I get that new episode notification!!!!
Thanks! Glad you’re enjoying it.
I have my own recipe for Gin with a slight hint of licorice from the ingredients. I call it "Black Emerald". I think it would meld well with the ingredients of the Rickey. You might try something like that.
Sounds interesting. If you’d like to share your recipe I’m all ears.
Tried this for the first time on the weekend using Jamieson Whiskey it was great.
Glad you gave it a go! Cheers
So, I found this cocktail intriguing. I'm a bourbon man almost all of the time. But I will drink a Long Inland Ice Tea if I'm reminiscing about college, or I'll drink a Gin and Tonic that my mother taught me to drink when it's hot outside.
I moved to Texas about 6 years ago. I hate the unbearable hot summers like the one we're having now. Therefore after seeing this, I went straight down to the local sports bar and ordered a Gin Rickey and a Bourbon Rickey consecutively. The Gin Rickey was awesome, refreshing, and cooling. Unfortunately, the Bourbon Rickey was a little too spicy to cool my Anti-Texas passion.
Mom's going to roll over in her grave, but I'm changing my summer drink. Bartender, it's damn hot outside; make me a Gin Ricky.
Ha. I’m sure she’ll understand.
Thanks for tuning in, another refreshing cocktail episode will release real soon so check back.
Two fine takes on a Rickey.
Your character is pure and inspiring
Awe thanks.
Come on people, let get Bruce up to 100,000 by the end of the year!
Ya people, what Greg said!
Ha. Cheers Greg, thanks for tuning in.
I feel like you’ve been drinking all afternoon and you’re doing this bit without any pants on like your on a zoom call lol 😂 jk that was cool to watch and I like the history with it
Damn, you’re onto me.
I know its against the core of a lime rickey, but try adding peach slices instead, adding a splash of peach juice and a bourbon. If you are one to own a decent peach whiskey use that instead. Havent tried with Rye as I dont really like most Ryes.
Yes! Any cocktail you would use "Club Soda" you should be using sparkling mineral water, I personally feel the best is "San Pellegrino" in the green bottle!
Trust me, having been in the homes of the very wealthy, presidents, and vice presidents, CEO's of the largest banks, all had a cellars (Basements) full of cases of San Peligrino!
I had to ask, "what's with all you guys and the cases of San Peligrino?
The response was "Mixer Dude!"
Instantly upped my cocktail game, killer mojitos!
I'm loving this guy! Been bartending for a few years, here and there. It's so much fun, and I love the history aspect to it.
Thanks! It’s a fun gig for sure.
Ooo I have some Hendricks at home I’m going to try when I get home as I’m usually craving a thirst quencher so I grab beer. Maybe I’ll have this today.
