    - the Tower 28 is supposed to be a good example of tinted sunscreen shade ranges! Sorry should’ve noted that
    - I filmed this video 2 maybe 3 weeks ago and have been using the Bioderma micellar water (got a free sample from olive young) and I’ve been liking it so far!

I've never liked micellar water. But while I was on vacation I got Pacifica coconut micellar cleansing water and it's actually pretty great! Doesn't leave a residue of any kind and it's super gentle. Plus it smells yummy and is a good affordable option.

I also had reactions to a bunch of micellar waters. I kept seeing recommendations for French brand Mustela's "Sensitive" formula. I now buy it in bulk 😬 I always take it when camping or traveling locally as it also makes a great waterless hand-cleanser, and I've even used to spot-treat stains on clothing 🤣 Anyway...other than that Make P:rem has a "Pure Biome cleansing water" that has also been excellent, bonus, probiotics, PHA, and it smells of pear

As an esthetician it drives me crazy when people say “retinol is the only true anti-aging skincare product” when sunscreen exists. Just use sunscreen and stay moisturized ✨retinol is nice for some people but the only necessary product for aging concerns is your spf

    • @anitathompson326
      @anitathompson326 2 года назад +79

I don’t think that is necessarily true though. As an avid retinol user for 10 years or so, it has actively kept wrinkles and dark marks at bay. Which of course, sunscreen will do the same, but not in the same way. Sunscreen can help prevent you from getting wrinkles and dark marks/sun spots darkening, but sunscreen doesn’t actually help reverse the aging process of the skin. Sunscreen is preventative. It helps you to not age as fast where retinol literally has been studied to actively reverse signs of the aging process. So I totally agree, sunscreen is an amazing necessary tool to have even more so than retinol, but at preventing. It won’t do a thing to lighten dark marks or lessen wrinkles you already have. Only keep them from getting worse. That’s all I’m saying.

Another issue with some tinted sunscreens is that if you apply the recommended 1/4 teaspoon amount, you just end up looking like you’re slathered in foundation. That brand you mentioned with the limited shade range actually mentions on their website that it’s designed to be used as a “secondary sunscreen”, alongside a regular SPF. So basically they just created a really limited foundation line that just happens to have SPF??

I'm late to this comment but I totally relate - currently on tretinoin 0.05% and I have had no reaction beyond some mild dryness and peeling at first. But I can't tolerate the exfoliating acids on my face, whether AHAs, BHAs, and even PHAs. 😤 I think it's because the acids only pull off the top dead layers of skin, but retinoids teach your skin at the cellular level to turnover and "behave" better, so to speak. It's the cell signaling action with retinoids, versus just dissolving skin layers with acids. That's my theory, anyway.

I'm using Glow Recipe's Guava Vitamin C Dark Spot Serum and I have found it's gentle on my skin and I have had no irritation with this product. It's a bit more on the expensive side but I have found it works for my skin so far. Vitamin C is actually a product I'm looking to possibly eliminate from my skincare routine to make it a bit more simpler so I'm not sure if I will continue to use a vitamin C but if I were to continue I would recommend this one. I’m telling you, Bioderma is unique. I have been using it for almost ten years and It was the first one so I could never even try to get near a profumy , itchy, and cheap Garnier one.
I have always loved makeup and it’s one of my biggest passion in life. Especially on my eyes more than on my face (never put on masks of foundation and contoruing), creating very colorful and elaborated looks cause I hate neutrals (the more toned down colors I could use are bronze shades)
Bioderma is ELITE. It doesn’t dry you down, it cleanses deeply, it doesn’t itch, it’s fresh and it doesn’t smell. (I mean those perfume irritating smells)
    Bioderma creates amazing products overall.
    Just a quick notice,
They have 3 line. A pink one, one blue and one green. I have always used the pink one but all three are aimed for various types of skin. One especially for sensitive skin that gets red and itchy.
Promise, you will find in this one, THE GOOD ONE.

IDK, but I tossed it… I didn’t use micellar water again for 2 years, then I found the Bioderma in my local Walgreens and started using it. The Hydrabio blue bottle, I use it daily and I love it! I have fickle skin, oily when it remembers to be, combo when it decides to not act up and dry as all heck when it’s being a jerk! And, I’ve not tossed the bottle out the window yet.

I feel like I was forced to use retinol because I am 42. I used it for 18 months and even increased the dose and it did absolutely nothing for me. I got the Sunday Riley $90 retinol in my FabFitFun box and it broke me out so bad. I am so glad I didn’t actually purchase it with my own money. Don’t even get me started on mixing retinol with any ELF skincare product. I broke out in a rash on my neck that made it look like someone strangled me, and I had to work with it the rash all over my neck. I also bought some elf skincare products because everyone hyped them up, and I had acne all over my chin. Good times.

I work in a beauty shop in the UK and I have to say I am a retinol lover but it’s deffo not for everyone, for people that do have a harder time finding a retinol that is suitable for their skin I always take them to the Medik8 Crystal Retinal. A retinol has to go through 3 structural changes in the skin before it’s ready to get to work. Because medik8 is formulated as a retinal not a retinol, it only changes once in the skin (they’ve already done the first two in the lab essentially) so because it’s going through less changes there’s less opportunity for it to cause sensitivity or a negative reaction so maybe give that one a try!!

15:43 Thank you!! Yeah, and the stress about if it’s not tretinoin or retin-A, it’s not worth it.
I use retinol, sure, but not everyone can do that and there’s peptides, vitamin C and living a healthy life in general that also contributes to a graceful ageing.
If I’ve learned something from watching Dr Shereene, Dr Alexis, Dr Vanita Rattan (all good dermatologists), it’s the regularity and persistence, the long term routine and not the highest percentage and not even always the strongest ingredient (I’m thinking hydroquinone and retinoic acid as well as high percentage AHA/BHA).
Like Dr Alexis says: Start low and go slow.
I’m leaving the fixation of high percentages back in 2021 and focusing on what doesn’t irritate my skin!
I do wish for you to find a face oil, though, a face oil that you like! Because I think you’re missing out on something really nice. I love Luna (Sunday Riley) and I like rosehip seed oil and grape seed oil - but I don’t like everyone that I’ve tried. I do hope you’ll find your perfect oil! It’s so nice at night !🥰

Thank you for this video James! 🙌❤️. I was experiencing the same thing last year where I was having a schedule during the week when I knew I was supposed to use certain products and I thought I needed a product for every targeted thing I was looking at like a separate vitamin c serum, separate niacinamide, several essences and serums, etc but going into 2022 I'm working on a simpler skincare routine that still includes products that work well for me and my skin and that I love, but are formulated together that way I don't have to have so many products and stress myself out with making sure I use certain things at certain times/days. Scheduling myself like that took the fun out of actually using the skincare products and doing skincare, which is something that I look forward to every morning and every night!!! I think the other thing I'm more focused on as well is just making sure my skin barrier is in good shape instead of worrying about having several different products to target specific things. So I'm going into 2022 with normalizing a good balance of enjoying products that work for my skin along with having fun with skincare. 😊

I LOVE the bioderma sebium micellar water. the blue/green one. I'll be the FIRST to admit that I've been super lazy in the past and that was my only method of cleansing and it's so gentle and really does get dirt and oils cleansed from my face. it is definitely something I will keep on my skincare shelf. it doesn't feel oily. I have an oily t-zone as well and it just makes my skin feel super clean. I was always so against micellar waters because they looked like the garnier one with the separation of water/micelles. but the bioderma doesn't look like that. and my beauty consultant at my job told me about the bioderma one, so I gave it a go and fell in love with it! so I HOPE it works for you, like it's worked for me!

Basically it’s a really gentle form of retinol (it might not even be a retinol but a retinol ester, can’t remember) but it’s actually effective because it’s stable and has good packaging, contrasting a lot of the more popular OTC retinols with higher and higher percentages of retinol but with less stability testing.

When my skin is annoyed, cleansing with jojoba oil is all it will tolerate. When my skin gets super dry, a couple of drops of oil added to my normal moisturizer helps to seal in the hydration I’ve applied. (I blend my own plant oils, without essential oils, for whatever my skin needs. I’ve never found a commercial blend that my skin likes.) Shea butter is my favorite occlusive. (My skin has a problem with petrochemicals. So, no petrolatum or mineral oil for me.) I should add that my skin is very reactive, always has been. I’ve learned, after decades of experimentation what helps and what messes it up. But I keep discovering more ways to annoy my skin.
For example, not rinsing off micellar water is a no-no for me. I learned this the hard way. I can use it to remove makeup or clean my skin when washing isn’t an option, but I always have to use water to rinse afterwards. If I don’t, my skin barrier can suffer.

I’ve been wanting more eco-friendly options, but a lot of those brands are “natural/organic” with lots of oils, essential oils, Shea butters, etc that I know my combo-oily, acne prone skin wouldn’t agree with. However, in regards to oils, I’ve found I’ve needed something with more oomph in the winter as my cheeks and eye area get drier (still oily t-zone), and mixing Squalane oil (TO Plant-derived diversion) into my moisturizer has worked wonders for the drier areas. Putting the oil on after my moisturizer is a heavy greasy gross feeling mess, but mixing it, I barely notice the extra product!

I feel like we’re always so in sync with skincare. I’ve pulled it way back. I was getting more and more blemishes and redness when I used to get 1, maybe 2 pimples a month. (narrowed it down to vitamin C and salicylic acid as culprits) Now that I use a ceramide face wash, glycolic toner in place of SA, TO caffeine serum, and cetaphil moisturizer - my face is finally completely even, clear, and glowy all day. I’ve tried so much high end and truly Cetaphil moisturizing lotion is the most long lasting, weightless form of hydration. I ditched “occlusive oils” a long time ago too- just don’t even need it anymore. I’ve also had to take a break from retinol for laser hair removal which has honestly been so nice. So much less flaking and irritation - but I purchased the Paula’s choice for when I’m done with laser so wish me luck. (Just a couple more weeks!)

I wonder if the range of darker tinted sunscreens has to do with the “demand” for it. As someone who works with skin cancers, I know everyone is susceptible to skin cancers, however I also know many people with darker skin tones who “think” they don’t need to use sunscreen.

    • @Maverickgouda
      @Maverickgouda 2 года назад +5

It’s possible. Majority of the consumers in some markets probably are tan, medium-light, or lighter. Then, the demographic shrinks furthermore with the small number of people on the dark half of the spectrum that have a demand for sunscreen. It is a growing niche though. The skin concerns are a bit different & the challenges do make sun protection harder to adopt

This argument has been used by brands a lot (also about fondation shade range). But if that was the problem, they could have a good shade range and just produce less of the darker ones. Just because potentially less people with darker skin would buy it, doesn't mean the gap in between each dark shade have to be huge... I think they just do not care at all honestly...

    • @saraashkir5793

@@Taemin727 that and the fact that darker tones tend to be harder to formulate. Thats obviously no excuse to not make those shades but they just dont want to put all that R&D into darker shades that take more work (and theyre also likely a bit racist)

Good for you, James!! I realize this is a place for Tretinoin in the skincare world, mainly for acne. However, I've lost count of how many influencers I've seen who have said, "Don't mind my peeling, irritated skin from my Tretinoin."🤨 I am 59. and am successfully using a lower strength retinol for several years with great success. And with NO side effects!! If an active ingredient made my skin irritated, it would not remain in my skincare routines!

Regarding your commentary on the tinted sunscreen, people forget the other end of the spectrum of people who are really pale too (which is even weirder because we burn so much faster than darker skin types.) It's impossible for me to find my color in general, let alone for a tinted sunscreen because I'm just too pale and I refuse to tan. Pale people understand the struggle too!

James, I don’t know if you’ll read this but a girl can dream. I probably have rosacea too, & for a fact perioral dermatitis and seborrheic eczema which flares up from time to time. The thing that has worked best for me (besides accutane, but you can only take so much) is the urea moisturizer by Malezia. They are a brand which launched last year, they are solar powered, sustainable, minimal ingredients but science based. They don’t invest in marketing to keep themselves sustainable, and donate 1% every month to 6 ngos that fight climate change. They also have an amazing benzoyl peroxide gel. I hope you can give them a try and a shoot out. We need more brands like them. Xx

I've never found a chemical sunscreen that doesn't sting the absolute shit out of my eyes or one that stays in place enough to protect anywhere near my eyes without migrating into them and doing the aforementioned stinging. I am fair af, so I can often use untinted or lightly tinted formulas, but most of them feel horrible and thick on my skin or even physically clog my pores.
I actually loved first aid beauty's tinted sunscreen more than anything and it was cancelled and I haven't found anything that I like even remotely as well yet. I do use Bliss Block Star, but I would call the formula "barely tolerable."
So it's not that I am some crazy conspiracy theorist, I just have insanely sensitive skin and eyes. 🤷‍♀️

No frills, fragrance free, etc. It’s not fun, but it’s effective (for me). I used to use facial oils as an occlusive layer but it honestly didn't do much for me. I started using the Cicaplast balm from La Roche Posay and Aquaphor (my brother's recommendation) and my skin has been feeling way better. It's not dry anymore in the morning, less sensitive, and surprisingly my acne has gotten a bit better.
One of the things I really stopped "caring" about is exfoliators. Before I would plan my weekly skincare routine based on when I was going to exfoliate. My skin would often be really irritated even tho I did it max once a week. Now I don't really stress over it, I do it when I feel that my skin really needs it.

James, I know you said you’ve tried retinol in all forms, but just to check - have you tried a (fragrance free) retinaldehyde product? I had issues with any retinol product as well but absolutely zero issues using retinaldehyde, and a bonus it’s more efficacious than retinol anyway. I got my mom on it, too, who has rosacea, and she hasn’t had any issues. We’ve mostly used the Protocol Lab brand but planning to try the Youth to the People one next
