Little tip regarding the plugin count limitation: Whatever tracks you have keys laid down on and set in stone, on the Main screen in the Track section, hit the Pencil Icon to the right of it, and it'll bring up some options. One of those is Bounce Track, it'll render the track into a Sample, and you can then remove the plugin or use it for another sound on another track. Little bit of a workaround, but it works well. @@GeorgiaMuscleFilms I like to mess with this sometimes even when not needing the extra CPU juice. Put some Flavor Pro on a piano track or something, bounce it down, then chop it up and flip it another way like it's another sample!
You can also bounce to a audio track. It'll turn that midi track into an audio track. Those 8 audio tracks in standalone come in handy.
This is how I do it. I take full advantage of what a sampler is.

You’re 100% correct! Coming from a 2000XL & Fantom-S back in the day…..those things were “standard” to where we didn’t even have to thing about those things! Akai be cutting corners like APPLE! Apple stopped giving us a DVD drive…a 3.5mm Jack….AirPods/EarPods….etc….Akai didn’t even add an expansion bay knowing that we love adding an internal HD! All of the keyboard sounds aren’t even included etc…..buuuuut….with all that being said….I still want one! I recently purchased the Akai MPK Mini Plus, & that’s the best one that they’ve ever produced! The 37-key range is the sweet spot to me when it comes to the shorter ranges (25/32/49). I really wish that on a bigger scale that they would make a Key-88 (hammer action) & Key-88 (waterfall action) so we could have full range for the pianist and non-pianist players. The 37 looks practical to me. The Key-61 is the BEST machine that they’ve ever produced imo! ✌🏾

I still regret selling my Triton. If the MPC37 had ADAT IN/OUTS, I might think about getting one. Honestly, I wouldn’t finish beats on it. It’s not for me. I’d like to get that Yamaha Montage 8x though.

@@defcreator187 when I think about the price, it's literally a One + with a keyboard attached which is still dope. I know full tracks can be done with it as is. Worst case scenario, I can get another synth to trigger if I really need to in standalone mode

HOWEVER THERE IS A WORK AROUND THAT ADDS MORE TRACKS...THEY NEED TO MAKE A MACRO FOR A SHORT CUT. MPC 61 CAN MAKE MORE TRACKS..BUT THE STEPS IT TAKE, TAKE AWAY THE CREATIVE VIBE. The answer is BOUNCE each Track to the 16 pads.
Yeah it’s crazy to have to do a work around
MPC 37 was never meant to compete with full fledged synthesizers. but more of a beat and samples loop song creator with an option to have extra synthesizers available in a professional easy to use and the best sequencer. MPC is a sampling beat machine with a keyboard with icying on the top as it's main selling point and focus, and not vice versa. If you dig and use and need synthesizers so much, then you should get a synthesizer instead of a sampling keyboard. I have a synthesizers for synth stacking and tracks, and an MPC beat machine for beats, an sampling keyboard for sampling keyboard parts. MPC Keys are specialty items, and not trying to be Me Too synthesizers, but something extra on top of the MPC platform that can take your loop or beat to the next level from a basic beat, or beat machine.

I own an Akai Force and it's hard to ignore all the things it should have but doesn't simply because Akai didn't want to step on the toes of other products. It really needed a larger screen that tilts because somethings on it are too small to edit/use comfortably like the sequencer. A lack of dedicated buttons also so there's a plethora of shift+ features and every update adds something new to it that makes it harder to use comfortably.
One update changing the entire way the machine is used and you often have to relearn things (Akai does update the user manual so that helps).The only reason the Force lacks stuff is because Akai didn't want it to directly compete with the MPC X When it really should have been an MPC -X like design with 64 pads instead of the usual. Seeing all these new MPC renditions from the SE to the One to the Key 37 and how the Force complaints are ignored makes you realize they really don't give a damn.
Any time you see a product that sells for $1300 going for $600used says that people no longer value it and it's market value is probably what people feel that it's worth. Granted I feel like the Force is the 2nd best offering next to the MPC-X in what is capable of offering and doing but it has limitations that don't make it so much fun or creative to use. "It's more like how do I do this and that again?"
In my opinion AKAI PROFESSIONAL does not make workstations, so I am not sure why they even call the Key 61 or Key 37 a workstation... These are just samplers (MPC's) with keys... So you are correct, limitations disqualify these units as workstation competitors... I like the limitations of the MPC and just adding keys in this form factor has now made me be able to let all of my Midi keyboards collect some good dust... At the end of the day, these are just MPC's with a key bed... Using a couple plugins and resample in is my workflow, so they could have gave me only 1 plugin track and I would be cool... so 8 is 7x what I need at the moment...

@@BurningBushPedagogy new MPC’s has audio recording for however much space you have on a installed or expanded drive. I have let my MPC live record audio for hours before to see what will happen when hard drive is full. Timeline view? If you talking about a linear arrangement view then correct. Other than that the workflow of the new MPC’s is on point for sampler’s they flagship units are just missing that iconic extra sound.

I recently started to use my akai in controller mode and it is nite and day. For the longest time I was all about standalone. But the thing is i mostly look at the hardware screen using my computer monitor only for the mixer channels and returns.
I'm a standalone head also. But I have to admit how much more capable controller mode makes it.
I remember making all the musicni needed with rhe mpc 2000 and a korg m50.

I had the Korg X3 from the early 90's and it had a 16-track sequencer, so I totally get what you're saying. But think about it. With the current music scene, all of the layering is not really wanted. I the drums are on point, a tight 808 and maybe two tracks of keys...that's all most current day artists want. So I think the Key37 will fit perfectly into that niche.

Hey Georgia Muscle, Great video. I was wondering is there a way to sample from external source directly to the MPC Key 61 keys like on the ASR10 and Triton keyboards with out using pads first? I'm use to those keyboard workflows I only want pads for drums. Thanks

The reason why the older workstations could do 16 tracks was because they had a fixed architecture running on hardware designed to run the sound engines. Or they had a ton of DSP chips. But when Korg released the Oasys and later the Kronos hardware makers realised they could just use general purpose processors and make a DAW in the box pretty much like a PC (Kronos is Linux and an Intel x86 processor). The current MPC range is using ARM processors for power and heat reasons, the processor is probably a fraction of the speed of your phone and when you think about what it is doing it's pretty incredible really. On your workstations of old you had to plugin extra boards if you wanted a new sound engine, now you can just download it.

Thank you for your video. I landed here after reading about the limitation on the FAQ page and Google searching it to understand better. As a lifelong technologist, I would have to agree with you that they should have put more RAM in it if for no other reason than public perception and also to better future-proof it. I've never owned an Akai product before but am about to take the plunge on the MPC Keys 37. I would gladly pay $100 more for a NVMe or SATA port, and for them to double the RAM. This seems like a miss on their part.

Best thing to do is grab the mpc studio 2 pair it with ur desktop or laptop 16gb at least n go… of course have a midi keyboard also but you won’t regret it.
Well, considering my Roland Integra 7 has sounds I prefer, the 8 plugin limit doesn't matter much. I can it suppliment the Key 61 with keygroups made by other hardward or direct audio anyways. In a practical sense, it does really affect me.
I'll never buy a 1st generation machine from Akai or any company... 2nd Gen and up only... just look at the Live 1 vs Live 2. 2nd gen for the most part are always better

I got excited when I saw the 37 . My friend has the live 2 and I was thinking the 37 could be useful for me as I always have to go to my friends place to make music on Pro logic X and we haven't really got down on the live 2 properly yet.
I would definitely prefer 16 tracks though because we like to layer also. Hmm I'm not sure what to do now lol.

I have a Mpc one but it’s only for ideas, I use Logic Pro and cubase 13 for my full production because a standalone Mpc keyboard can’t cut it for me. I use up to 50 tracks on my production or more.

I can’t get pass 4 plugins b4 it taps out.61 was advertised as a workstation it definitely falls short.Would love a montage Fantom or korg but they’re so expensive & I’ve read 1 of these doesn’t sample not sure.Maybe the push 3 standalone is a better option but the 37 is not for me I’ll keep my MPC 1 but as for the 61 ….it may have to go

Hoping for an answer. Im looking to get one for the sampling feature. It looked easy to use. My question is, does the sampling plug in count as one of eight? Also, if i load a strings plug in for one track, now that its loaded in can i use it over several tracks? I am used to sequencing on a motif and with 16 tracks i can layer nicely. I have never used an MPC but from what Im understanding here is that i only can load up to 8 tracks per song recording?
No the sampler doesn’t count as one of the eight or four if u get a 37, you can use that string plugin multiple times and it’s just one plugin,

Workstations of the past all had their iconic sounds burned into rom and instantly available.
Akai in those days was a great sampler, sequencer and drum machine but NOT a stand alone workstation.
With 4 midi outputs connected to
Triton, Motif, Fantom, Minimoog 90s was a fun time.
Akai future seems to be a hardware machine that runs its own software instruments.
They will have to crank up the CPU to lure me in and perhaps add Flash Rom like the new motifs.

Now that I know the limitations of this device I'm cool with it,,, for an old-school R&b producer like myself who also happened to be a keyboard player first & foremost,,, I will just connect a rack mount like Yamaha motif to it and I'm Cool,, But for a lightweight solution ,,buy an iPad and put Korg gadget on it and use it as a sound module. Or you can do exactly what he said earlier and just use the MPC to start the foundation of your songs and then drop it into a DAW to complete 🎯

We have a point when you use fabric XL but at some point you want to leverage the processing power of your computer so you go over to the DAW MPC 2.0 where you can manipulate all the sounds.

@@GeorgiaMuscleFilms I have no argument for that. The point of having a modern MPC is the benefit of being able to utilize it standalone. I have a native instruments MK3 and having access to all of those sounds almost makes it too easy to make bangers. I prefer the challenge of working and standalone but unlike you I may not utilize as many plugins in an individual project so I can respect your perspective and craft.

@@badboy69cancer I understand. Native instruments maschine+ is a stand alone. A lot of concerns from customers was that it didn't have the power to run a lot of sounds. In the case of both native and Akai, when your dealing with audio files, sometimes .wav files that are huge sample libraries, some people's DESKTOPS can't even run them smoothly. The DAW comes in handy when you want to create "heavier" sessions. You still don't have to look at your desktop screen, you can still trigger everything within the groove box.
lol 😂 Arturia Microlab 25 key alone with the MPC software on computer to have use of 128 tracks and VST plugins at your disposal. Easily pack up for travel also smaller blueprint IMO. One love my brother

The ability to do 16 sounds on an older machine vs 6 instruments on the newer machine is about the difference in technology... Keyboards still to this day (Yamaha Montage, Roland Fantom, Korg Nautilus and etc) work on a ROM system... while the AKAI is working on a RAM system (same as VST instruments on your computer) - its convenient but not efficient... memory when talking about storage is cheap but not so much when talking RAM or modern CPUs... and this is the problem when a company jumps off into a new lane... with that said - I don't think it's AKAI's intentions (as of now) to replace or even compete with dedicated keyboard manufactures more as to offer an additional tool or solution... and there's always the cumbersome task of bouncing down to audio which uses significantly less resources... As an MPC X owner and longtime user who has always just seen my MPC as my sequencer and drum programming - the Key 61/37 doesn't make sense to me because other options exist that I consider better

My biggest problem with MPC is RAM. Why are they so stingy with the ram? A person in the comments hit it on the nail about. We should at least have four gigs of ram cell phones have more RAM than these instruments. That's embarrassing! 💯🤟🏽

so I don’t see a reason for their standalone being so weak cpu and ram wise for $1500 the keyboard should be at least 30% more powerful and the x at least 50% more powerful
People will save pay for a full package Akai needs to get that in their heads.
Technology is also growing very fast so they should also do cheaper controller versions of the keys and the X and make them modular with the ability to become standalone if needed
