Brilliant real world review. First time since M1 range I've bought a new Mac and iPad with M4 range and it is as much due to the new designs as the chips.
This is the video that I've been looking for I'd love to know what you recommend as a better alternative PC for blender creation in the same price range as the M4 or M4 pro.
For same piece as M4 I would self build and perhaps source an rtx 2060 or 3060 which is coming in slightly higher, comparative gaming laptops come in closer to 1000. For same price as M4 pro you could likely get a pre built 40 series with a decent AMD GPU and at least 32gb ram and 1tb HD
I made a test in blender of my old project with a base Mac mini M4 and my laptop with an RTX 3050 4GB. The laptop won, but only by 10 seconds, and it made so much more noise

Banger video, these really don’t exist as much as they need to for 3D workflows My workflow benefits greatly from the interconnectivity of my Apple devices so I’ve been a big proponent of 3D processes on Mac, fully aware of the shortcomings that existed early on The gap gets thinner and thinner and I love seeing it even if I’m not gonna get them
Bunch of the same videos and test around the internet but only Yours is really useful. I would wait few weeks for upcoming optimizations for m4 chips and better results.
Thank you for the review. I do a lot of work in Metashape and am considering getting this to render models while I work on my laptop. It's the perfect size to stuff into a medium or small Pelican Case and take on the road.
I still use my M1 Mac Mini for Blender modelling. It struggles loading Unreal Engine but Godot and other game engines run pretty smoothly. Haven't downloaded Blender 4.3 onto my Mac as it crashes on opening on my zbook laptop so I wasn't about to waste time downloading a buggy version. What I will say though is that I bought a 16GB RAM version of the base M1. I think memory made the big difference with how my Mini performed so the new M4 having 16GB base sounds good.
Great video. I have just purchased an M4 pro and have the Samsung Oled G9 49 inch. But I cannot get full resolution. It's not showing up in the mac preferences. I am using HDMI 2.1 cable and input. What am I missing? Any ideas?
I just gave you 1,000 likes! Thank you for this video. I think it's a great machine, but it seems to be a few years behind a 3080 laptop from over three years ago. I guess I will wait for the studio version. The only issue with the mini is that the highest specification only has 16 GPU cores.

Thank you, sir for this review. I am a VFX on-set supervisor and compositor that sometimes need to process 3D images and photogrammetry so these are good news. My M1 Pro MacBook pro is still great for video editing and related tasks, but 3D have been difficult because of the low GPU performance. I will go for a 20GPU cores and 48GB of Ram Mac mini. That will be more than enough for my tasks for some years
Is there a large advantage between the base m4 Mac mini and the Mac mini pro when using blender? Would investing in the additional GPU or 64gb of memory net a significant result in blender? Thank you.
Check the rest of the benchmarks on the blender benchmark site, it lists M4 pro CPUs on there. Regarding ram generally the more the better but again will depend on the complexity of your scene, number of polys textures etc

So I’m guessing it is a good starting point for someone who wants to learn Blender, right? I tried learning it on a Mac mini m2 base model, but 8 GB of RAM was too low and everything started to lag when I got to shading and lighting. Eventually, I gave up and sold the mini :(
I have a question for you. Would the Mac mini m4 base model version be a good computer for video editing? I currently have an i5 12400F and GTX4060. I want to move to the Apple ecosystem. I do 2K and rarely 4K video editing. Do you think the base model will work for me for a long time?
@@luipaardprint Thanks for the answer. 🙏 I asked because I'm thinking buying a 24 or 32GB M4 instead of base M4 Pro. They would have better prices for me with an external ssd 🙂
fact the base mac mini gets comparable gpu performance to nvidia 3050 but sips power is pretty darn amazing. When I play black myth wukong on my PC with RTX 2060, it gets hot and the fans spin up. Even RTX 2060 needs probably 4x the power for comparable performance.
sadly it's not up to spec in the gpu department yet. I really hoped it would be, but it's just not. Even an m4 max with 40 cores has no chance vs a 4090. 4090 will render one of my 3d scenes in 10 seconds vs over 1 minute on the 40 core m4 max.. I can't imagine how slow the base m4 mini would be in comparison. I dream of the day when they get decent for 3d work but it's just not the case yet unless you have the most basic of scenes and don't use octane/cycles/gpu based renderers
Fantastic video! I do love the weird purple light for some reason. Gotta give it to the little mac it does well and as you say, I want to hate it but seems to do well. Do you think it’s an overkill? if so, what do you think will be the best specs for what I’m doing for the 5 years or so? :)
