Thank you, finally someone shows how it really works with a 3D model and not just a simple render of a benchmark scene (which every PC can do)… slower or faster, as if 3D artists only made renders and not texture, models and photogeometry. Waiting for more tests for 3D modeling on Mac Mini if it happens in the future.

For same piece as M4 I would self build and perhaps source an rtx 2060 or 3060 which is coming in slightly higher, comparative gaming laptops come in closer to 1000. For same price as M4 pro you could likely get a pre built 40 series with a decent AMD GPU and at least 32gb ram and 1tb HD

I still use my M1 Mac Mini for Blender modelling. It struggles loading Unreal Engine but Godot and other game engines run pretty smoothly. Haven't downloaded Blender 4.3 onto my Mac as it crashes on opening on my zbook laptop so I wasn't about to waste time downloading a buggy version.
What I will say though is that I bought a 16GB RAM version of the base M1. I think memory made the big difference with how my Mini performed so the new M4 having 16GB base sounds good.

sadly it's not up to spec in the gpu department yet. I really hoped it would be, but it's just not. Even an m4 max with 40 cores has no chance vs a 4090. 4090 will render one of my 3d scenes in 10 seconds vs over 1 minute on the 40 core m4 max.. I can't imagine how slow the base m4 mini would be in comparison. I dream of the day when they get decent for 3d work but it's just not the case yet unless you have the most basic of scenes and don't use octane/cycles/gpu based renderers

I like that you compared the performance to a computer running a 4080 because for some people they might be choosing between MacOS and Linux (obviously no one's going to want to use Windows 11 😆). However, it should be stressed that this is the base model Mac Mini, and it costs about half the price of just the GPU in the other machine. It would be interesting to see how a comparably priced M4 setup would compete with the 4080 equipped device. You are also right that power consumption is a consideration, and heat output can be a major factor too, espcially if you live in a warm or tropical climate.

pretty good machine for those who never got into the mac ecosystem, but i'm kinda disappointed how the gpu is still far from decent for 3d tasks, specially if you're into unreal engine 5

you don't need a very powerful machine and a lot of ram 16 go ram is very good (24 go ram why not) but the blender artist hides all the scene except in the object where he works to preserve ram and power the M4 pro is very good base model where the M4 can do the work very well knowing after the benchmarks the mac M4 is 10x faster than the mac M1 or the same power as an M1 MAX (blender benchmark)

Nice thanks, the m macs are maturing. However with apples pricing structure it isn't really worth overspending on a machine that will be overtaken 3 years with no way of upgrading. Apples greed is probably actually stopping them making more money.
