- Do you have outboard starter problems such as the outboard starter not engaging? Our Mercury outboard would not start and the outboard starter motor just clicks. In this video we diagnose the outboard starter solenoid and replace the outboard starter motor on our Mercury Force 120HP Outboard Boat motor engine.
This technique is the same for most outboard marine boat engines.

My friend… our starter was seizing while we were on the water and your tip to give it a few wacks got us back to shore. Thank you for the video!!!
thats awesome! glad it helped!!!! ❤️
Did u replace the starter
Great info. Tough to find people that deal with outboards. Especially Evinrude. Just had this issue. I’m all for getting my hands dirty, but I got a new starter for $45. Took about an hour to replace, flipping air box. Funny thing, I just had the cover off the day before. Like to clean the breathers on the carbs every year. Fried the starter because of an unplugged safety tether. Killed the battery, too. And did some paddling. And swimming.
yeah it doesnt take much to fry the starters. low battery does it for me!
Thank you so much. All I had to do was give it a few taps. May God bless you
Nice glad to help. Be careful tho as you can crack the magnets like we did 🤦♂️
@@mudbrats ok, thanks
That music towards end ! Brilliant 😎
hahaha thanks!
Thanks for the video, that was the problem I was having. I replaced it and it works great. Thanks for the help.
hey glad to help! i am learning on tbese outboards as well
You replaced the starter?
Very good video to learn.
thank-you! 👍
Mr. thumbs down probly thought this was to replace his prop. Great vid, thanks
Thank-you! Someone always thumbs them down haha
Just replaced the starter today but it’s not going all the way up and not engaging with the engine, this thing it’s pissing me off
take the gear off the pinion and apply a small amount of oil…
Hello.
My starter just spins and will not shut off.. i have to disconnect the ground wire to shut it off. Even with the key out of the ignition starter is still Engaging. Could that be the starter its self going bad
not sure on that one…. maybe its a solonoid issue
UGH.. Having starter problems Aye Skipper?? Like me, You haven't had to worry about "brushes" in quite awhile !!😂 Take Care Buddy.. Happy Boating...
10 points for finding a bald guy joke there 😂 its running mint now
My starter on my 1982 Johnson's Outboard was just spinning when I turned the key it won't engage the flywheel any suggestions
You could start by lubricating the little bendix gear and shaft, but you likely need a new starter
Where the teeth are how did you get that neck above it to stand up because mine is pushed down when I just got it in the box?
it comes this way - its a shaft so doesnt move up and down - you likely got sent the wrong starter
When replacing a starter can it be aftermarket or does have too be original?
Aftermarket is good. And will save you a lot of money. I believe the mercury starter was 4x the price I paid for this one.
Thanks for the feedback 👍
Question I just purchased a new starter for my boat same motor as yours, if for some reason I connected it backwards can that damage the starter?
i am
not sure on that but change the connections back the right way and if it still
works you are likely good to go!
@MUDBRATS // SNOWBRATS
I replaced my new starter with a aftermarket one but doesn't click or crank? U think it can be my solenoid
@@cczaragoza5168 is there powere at the terminal or solonoid? usually but not always, if there is no click its your solonoid. Make sur eu have a fully charged and strong battery and use a Voltmeter to test voltage through the system. What happens when you take a screwdriver and touch it across the terminals on the starter? does it crank?

Thank you for your time and response 🙏 👍
Mate I just bought a boat and its got a 2 stroke old johnson motor , for some reason they changed the wires and because of that I connect them wrong to the battery and the fuse is gone , I changed the fuse and try again for a second because there was no water to test it , it turn on and I turn off straight away, now when I try to turn on its not starting, making a sound and after couple of times try no sound as well , I tried jumper starter but didnt make any difference , would you have any idea
the only thing that may be wrong is the starter brushes may have melted and disconnected when u tried to start with a dead battery or improper polarity. Not sure
My starter is spinning but, not engaging the flywheel.
@@howardseverance6364 could beed lubricating around the shaft.
Why would my starter just be spinning when I turn the key switch and not jumping up to catch it, could it be anything with the key switch?
i would bet its the Bendix and Spring on the started itself. Have you noticed it dinging at idle lately? thats usually the first sign and its a common problem. Good news is kits are cheap and easy to replace
Thank you for posting this. My charger says battery is 100% charged. When I try to start the starter turns, but the pinion doesn't lift and engage. The battery is old (2011) so I am not confident it is still good. Can a bad battery cause the starter to not lift into position, yet have enough power to still turn the gear?
possibly, if u boost it and it starts then its likely the battery. If it still doesnt it could be a bendix gear kit or new starter/solonoid
The solenoid CAN click without making connection. Just happened to me. ALWAYS test whether there is continuity after the click, this may save you much grief.
Good tip
So I put in a new solenoid, ignition, and starter and I still have this problem where the starter will whine like it’s trying to make contact or something and won’t shut down the engine is off but the whine stays for like five minutes. Do you know what that could be?
No I do not, sorry. Hoping another viewer will be able to help here
hey frank you figure out the problem yet ? i think i’m having the same issue
@@JuanPerez-gs5fg nope not yet although it hasn’t happened again. I will say it was happening a lot until I got a new starter. Although I bet it’s not fixed AMD will happen again till I find out what it is
cool! i just had someone tell me that in the owners manual it calls for putting a few drops of oil in the “bendix” once a year, which is the part that moves up and down on the starter that catches the fly wheel, im going to give that a shot. before i replace the starter ! 🤞🏼🤞🏼
@@JuanPerez-gs5fg good luck tell me how it goes!
Any help I have a 1986 Mercury 90 hp it will crank for 2 seconds an the starter will kick out then you have to turn the key off an then it will crank an do the same thing
that may not be a starter issue… may be timing or ignition…. sorry i cant help further
It will start up after doing this a few times an run then it will run good when it’s hot
@@brandone6252 likely just needs a tuneup/carb cleaning. When it kicks out, its telling the starter to back off as it thinks its running…
Just changed the plugs new primer bulb fuel cleaner new starter solenoid new cable from starter solenoid to starter new key switch charged batteries sprayed the carbs out with carb cleaner
mine is doing that clinking sound my starter was fine the solinoid was bad
thanks for posting that - may help another captain with troubleshooting!
I had this issue bought a BRAND NEW one and the same issue is happening. It clicks on but it won’t go up into the fly wheel
is the battery fully charged and enough cranking amps? either that maybe the solenoid is getting weak but never heard if thats a problem or not
hey you figure out what the issue was ? i think i’m having the same problem
Can a Amazon starter be ok?
Possibly. Read the reviews and on,y buy if it’s highly rated
When are you taking me for a boat ride?
anytime man - lets doo it - ill buzz when we are up
Mr. thumbs down is a wanker. Great vid, gracias
“Periodically check” what? 03:29
that the starter nuts dont loosen off.
Amazon!!!!!
I have a pull start motor and I wont to fit a electric start motor on my mercury marine serial number is (ONO45091) (2005 ME30 EMLH) 30 HP
Not sure on that one. Maybe someone will comment here that knows.
