  • People always give Goombas a hard time and believe they're the weakest enemies in the Super Mario series. Well, I aim to set the record straight...
    Over the years, there have been some laughably weak main characters starring in video games, characters who you're almost embarrassed to be controlling or if they're enemies, feel bad to fight. In this series, I'll show footage of these characters' greatest feats of "power".

    Some stuff regarding Super Mario World that you didn't mention:
    -A little trick regarding spitting up shells to reset the swallow timer - if you completely stop, crouch, and _then_ spit a non-red Koopa shell out, it will _not_ be shot violently forward (creating the threat of it bouncing back and hitting you) but instead plop down gently onto the ground just in front of you. This also works with Mario/Luigi carrying a shell (or any object, really) - crouch before releasing the run button to place the object down rather than kick it forward.
    -You need to be wary of Koopa Troopas that pop out of blue shells - they will have a different sprite, and look much bulkier. These guys will kick any Koopa shell in the direction they're facing instead of jumping back in if they come into contact with one.
    -if you knock a Koopa Troopa out of a yellow shell and it jumps back in, it turns into the hyper Koopa Troopa instead! Thankfully, jumping on one is not damaging and makes you just bounce off, while a spin jump (or Yoshi stomp) will instantly dispatch it.

    When you think about it, a large chunk of Bowser's army (at least in 2D platformers) is extremely pathetic. Goombas are obvious, Koopas are explained here, Spinies are negated by fire flowers, Thwomp slams can be avoided by simply waiting or running, Boos will stay in one place if you look at them, etc. Why can't Bowser just recruit only Spike Tops (immune both to jump and fire flower, while also able to walk on wals) and be done with it?

      I think their strength is in raw numbers. Usually they don't kill you by offense but rather by intimidation. Their presence makes you potentially fail a jump costing a life or your really rare power up that you need to get Star coins. I'm also reminded of Super Mario 35 where your game usually ended when you had a wall of Lakitus heading your way, but a well placed Koopa usually was enough to make a player mess up a jump. Thanks muscle memory.
      On top of that, Bowser's not really trying to destory Mario, just prevent him from reaching the Princess and ruining his attempt at marrying her, so thus most enemies are defensive in nature. Mario's the one storming the castle. Only Magikoopa and to an extent Bullet Bill proactively tries to attack Mario. Even the "Bros" mostly stand post and attack wildly to just keep Mario at bay, they don't chase him though if he avoids them.and it's implied Boos and Shyguys aren't part of Bowser's army as much as just being pranksters who happen to ally against Mario.

    As to why Yoshi eventually swallows shells, I'd like to imagine the inside of a Yoshi's mouth is as horrifying as the mouth of a leatherback turtle combined with the acidic venom of a xenomorph. A few things in defense of Koopas, because someone has to:
    They're just as viable as everyone else in the spinoffs they're in, and that has to count for something.
    Paratroopas can survive another hit. Green Koopa's erratic bouncing makes them a pain to jump on, and Red Koopas fly in midair- meaning that if one is placed over a pit, Mario can miss his jump and die because of it.
    While Dry Bones and Hammer Bros. are _technically_ part of the Koopa family, I'm not sure if they should be included...
    Various Koopas have earned roles as bosses- The Koopa Bros. from PM64, Kent C. Koopa, though he's optional, and Corporal Paraplonk of The Elite Trio from the Mario and Luigi games all managed to be considered bosses.
    While Koopa the Quick is nowhere near as fast as Mario, the Roving Racers who host the Koopa Freerunning minigame, most notably the gold one, are just as agile as Mario himself.

    • @DoctorSpacebar

    • @robotron6420
      @robotron6420 Год назад

      Viable sometimes? Yes, but they do help mario more than harming him.
      Yet some Paratroopas are flying over the abyss, just one hit will make them fall to their death.
      Dry Bones are technically from their Family, but they do act different as not leaving a shield and reviving upon death.
      These bosses koopas are koopas with special habilities and kinda harder, but normal koopas are still the same.
      Cannot say anything about Quick Koopa and the Roving Racers though

    I think what sums up your video perfectly is the fact that you mentioned the TTYD Koopas have 2 attack power instead of 1... in all my years since TTYD came out I NEVER knew that.... Given you can effortlessly stunlock them like you can PM64. Plus I recall one of the Mario and Luigi games made the regular goombas a more mid-late game enemy and even in Mario Party 3, Goomba doing 2 damage over Koopa's 1 is far more useful than having less HP since it's so rare the front partner is ever attacked, making Luigi a better choice than Mario. A powered up double goomba can one shot your opponent as well and is the cheapest partner with 2 attack.

    • @MarioMastar
      @MarioMastar Год назад +8

      Oh and let's not forget mario RPG where the FIRST enemies you come across are the easily one shot Terrapins, Koopas in soldier armor. The GOOMBAS can survive the basic attack, requiring the timed hit to defeat in one shot, but the terrapins die in one punch without action commands. At least the naked Koopa Troopas do take a jump to defeat quickly. HOW is Bowser's ARMORED warriors weaker than ... a naked Goomba? and heck the Gu-Goombas are also more powerful than the upgraded Terrapins in the revisit and those are stronger than BOTH Koopa Troopa variants you fight through the game. Only weaker than the Tub-o-Troopa who's pretty much on par, but requires 2 turns to attack.

    there is a difference between strenght and competence, koopa troopas are stronger than goombas but more incompetent (And for begginners, koopa shells they themselves kicked are a threat due to them ricochetting on walls as well as their speed), And red koopas not necessarily are more dangerous than the greens (greens can drop on mario from above on occasion)

    • @opalyasu7159
      @opalyasu7159 11 месяцев назад +2

      The first enemy in super Mario bros was originally gonna be a Koopa and I think I can see why they changed it to a goomba. Koopas are easy but they don't die in one hit, so goombas are easier for beginners to handle, but they're nowhere near as exploitable as the Koopas

  • @Cici_Ay
    @Cici_Ay Год назад +7

    I agree with some of your points and less with others. It really depends on one's definition of 'weakest'.
    SMB Koopas are certainly more potentially useful than Goombas for the reasons you gave, but even the humble Green Koopa is less vulnerable to Mario's stomp than any Goomba. While they can be weaponized against other foes, that would make them rather strong, yes? Even if that strength is misdirected... They are a double-edged sword, and careening Koopa shells have been responsible for many incidental plumber deaths over the years.
    SMB3 is more of the same, really, if somewhat amplified. Your ability to carry and kick shells means you can weaponize them in many different ways, as you pointed out - though of course this also extends to potentially kicking them into spaces which make them difficult to avoid.
    SMW both weakened and strengthened Koopas. Most can be stomped right out of their shells and are easily dealt with afterwards, as you said, and they also don't threaten to pop back out of their shells while you're holding them if removed this way so you can more safely utilize them. However, Blue Koopas and Yellow Koopas deserve some special mention:
    - Blues are arguably more dangerous when not inside their shells, as they will kick any shell they come across, effectively turning your own dastardly tricks against you. They also walk around faster than other Koopas while in their shells - a minor detail, but a note in their favour nonetheless.
    - Yellows will return to their shell, which will then proceed to track you at a speed which makes it tricky to defeat or avoid them. They also track Mario when moving around normally, and can turn to pursue him on their own while every other Koopa apparently needs a better reason to turn around and do their job.
    Yoshi serves as an effective counter to them, but Yoshi trivializes the game in general. Him and the Super Cape together erase most of the game's difficulty.
    Past the 16-bit era it gets harder to defend them. In fact I'll go a step further and say that in SM64, even Micro Goombas are more dangerous than Koopas since even though they can't damage you directly, they are hard to hit and often appear in areas where the recoil they cause from bumping into you can easily knock you into bottomless pits.
    Sorry about the text wall, I don't normally do this kind of thing anymore but Mario brings out the ranting nerd in me.
    Interesting topic, good video.

    Koopa Troopas and their shells are even more useful than the video pointed out! In Super Mario World, if you crouch and hit Y while Yoshi has a shell in his mouth, he will spit it out onto the floor in front of him! It won't move, negating the risk of hurting yourself with it, and you can eat it again to reset the time before Yoshi swallows it! Makes the Blue Yoshi even better for flying through entire levels! Also in Super Mario 64, Koopa Troopas not only can't hurt Mario and give him their shell to surf around on, but they drop a Blue Coin when defeated, which is worth 5 coins (great for getting the 100-Coin star in each level) and heal Mario for over half his Power Meter! At this point the Koopa Troopas are practically betraying Bowser and helping Mario!

    A character I think has been screwed over by her game's mechanics is Papillion from La Pucelle Ragnarok. In layman's terms, she's an Est that falls off.
    The long explanation is that, despite her high movement, she really isn't an asset to the team because stats and learning spells are greatly affected by what equipment you have and that leaves her stats becoming unimpressive because other units will have better unequipped stats that will become better when given the best equipment. It's even worse in postgame as you eventually obtain an armor that gives the user the ability to teleport and can easily be passed around in one turn. Also Prier can straight up recruit Baal repeatedly until he fills the entire deployment limit once she gets strong enough. In the original release you mostly just did this to flaunt your superiority as he was *the* superboss, but the overseas releases added stronger ones referencing Disgaea and suddenly recruiting a bunch of monsters with amazing stats, coverage and growths is a lot more desirable, as is Papillion's own partner Homard thanks to his unique attack that deals 10x effective damage against them.
    If you expected her to at least do better in the Ragnarok exclusive Overlord Mode, think again. Regardless of what ending you're locked into, all of the non-monster party members other than Prier will drop out during the final chapter.

However, there is one variation of Koopa Troopa in the game that IS able to still attack after being flipped onto its back. Loving the visuals of Paper Mario TTYD in this video, how did you do it? I'd love to play this game again with those graphics

      Probably an emulator. But according to the direct leaks from a VERY reputable source an HD Remaster of TTYD is probably on its way this year.

    I’ll give them one small pass, they aren’t the worst partner in the Mario Party 3 duel mode… still waiting on that to drop for switch online.
