    You haven’t lived until you get to sing the background vocals for this song with the rest of the audience at a Midge Ure show. Love this band and John Foxx even more!

    Hi guys! I was 16 when this was a hit in the UK. In those days, there was (obv) no such thing as RUclips or the internet to check song lyrics. For years I was singing "ashamed by the power of The Voice"! It was only when Smash Hits or New Musical Express printed them that any of us knew what was actually being sung. Ultravox were pioneers in making their own videos, and my personal favourite is 'The Thin Wall' The live version of this on their live album 'Monument' is the best version with their support band Messengers providing backing vocals, and the four band members all playing drums for the outro. It is worth checking out. Take care and have a Merry Christmas xx

    The voice is Ultravox's best song in my opinion and either of the versions you played here are excellent but the most powerful version was the live one which when you were in the crowd as i was in in the 1984 Set Movements tour knocked you off your feet and never forgotten.

    Really? The original recording was done by Conny Plank, an absolute genius. It is one of their best songs and it has always been Midge's voice that made it shine. In the newer version, he's doing that semi-whispered vocal in the verses, as he did on a lot of the songs on Brilliant, which isn't half as impactful as the original vocal performance. It's still good but it's not really a patch on the original.

    • @starry2006

      The video has a clear '1984' feel to it I think, a dictator controlling people through his voice, and people rebelling.

  • @starry2006
    @starry2006 3 года назад +3

    I think The Voice has something of a Moody Blues sound to it.
    A single I had at the time was Love's Great Adventure, great video for that one.
    The orchestrated production has more space around the vocal but doesn't have the energy of the original. So it's aiming for something different.

  • @bazkeen
    @bazkeen 3 года назад +2

    I'm a sucker for orchestral tunes these days. So my vote goes to the second one. It also sounded a bit more dramatic, if that makes sense.
    Great choice Mike. Loved it👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    Voice sounds richer.....? 30 years of performing between the original and the modern will do that. I grew in the 80's and still have their full vinyl catalogue......play it often .

    I saw Ultravox live in Sweden 2010, Midge Ure looked like a bald old grandpa but his voice sounded just like it did in the 80's. The first album i bought with my own money at age 12 was an Ultravox album and seeing them live almost 30 years later was really amazing. :)

      One of the 2010 concerts is up on RUclips, and I've watched it a few times end to end. I bet you had a great time watching it live! It was amazing to finally see Midge live after almost 40 years when Ginger and I got to a show in February 2020. 😁 -M

    As far as the video goes and how you didn't get it, if you watch it again and keep in mind the words "The Voice of", it may help you understand it a little better. Hope that helps, keep up the good work.

    Sorry guys, but the orchestrated version isn't what Ultravox stood for. Unfortunately Ultravox records didn't sound very balanced those days. Groups like Dire Straits did way better. Nevertheless the original version had the typical Ultravox sound signature. A similiar song was "One small day". Classical music elements can support a good song like Metallica did with their S&M album. But this version is a new song (sth like classic rock did in the past) and has nothing to do with the sound that Ultravox were beloved for. Of course you may prefer the orchestrated version. I would call it Midge Ure goes classics. Nice but lost that feeling.

    Midges voice in the 80s was covered with effects in the early conny plank era (not all) The Rage In Eden track "The Voice" album version is far better than this orchestrated one in my opinion. Mike hit the nail on the head when he said Midge has lost the top end range of his vocal, that for me was the highlight of his vocal in later tracks such as "Visions In Blue" "Hymn" "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes" to name but a few. His vocal is richer on the low end and more enhanced now with digital editing as opposed to the analogue days which studios have gone back to using in conjunction with digital with the likes neve pre-amps which give vocals a far more in your face hit and warmth. Midge is a great artist as are all the Ultravox musicians, Chris, Billy, Warren without their input especially Billy's classical arrangments these tracks wouldnt have been the same in my opinion. Orchestrated is a great album but lacks the rest of the guys input for me.

    This song was always far better live. If you listen to the live version on monument the sound track LP it's outstanding. The studio version is tame in comparison.
