man i just bought a 2012 escape...i could not resist the awesome deal...ill get a newer model in 2 years after my lease...At least the escape i bought has every option in it to keep me happy lol.
Absolutely! Always willing to take money. Obviously you can see the dates at which my Escape and CX-5 reviews posted, so no, I have not driven the 2014 CX-5. But it's clear that I was spot-on in my criticism of it seeing as how Mazda quickly upgraded the engine choice. But, the measly power is only part of the CX-5 problem. The automatic transmission is the other elephant in the room. Skyactiv is a bust thus far...it's deluting Mazda's zoom-zoom reputation.
Great review Mr. Steve. This vehicle is by far best in class. While it can't match the CR-V's family friendliness, it trumps every other competitor in every category. Toyota really has to come out of nowhere with the next RAV-4 if they want to compete at all. Ford has done wonders with this car. A CUV is totally impractical for me yet Ford makes me want one. This car proves that Ford is going places.
Love love love my new Ford Escape Titanium.. didn't pay that price!! Got 3 price drops from USAA etc.. Plus, Ford gave $2500. discount!! The titanium is the Ford you want to drive and the only model you want!!! Beautiful Ford just beautiful feel like I'm driving a sports car which I personally love!!! Drive the Titanium then write your review.. oh 2.0 eco boost engine, also!!!
Judging by how many Focus Titaniums I see around, Fords pricing strategy has been a huge success ... and these things can easily run into the high twenties. The newer fords are essentialy european cars with a ford badge and need to be purchased like europeans purchase their cars. You have to order it how you want it or you're going to have a hard time getting the one you want.
Not going to lie, the first time I saw a picture, at first glance I thought I was looking at a Ford Focus. BUT, I like this front-end look on the Escape a bit better than the Focus. The $37,000 price-tag for an Escape Titanium is price-y, but as mentioned, it's nice to have the wide cost spectrum for everyone. I know plenty of people who'd put this money out for something like this, easy.
For those who need AWD/4WD...no mention of the Forester and it's redesign? That's one of the best crossovers. I think the Mazda CX5 is the best looking, but the CR-V is so much more practical in so many ways than the Escape.
Whats wrong with skyactive and the automatic trans? Steve it just seems like everyone is so quick to jump on Fords ass for making a decent car if that. I test drove both of these cars alot before deciding to buy the 2014 cx5. You think i made a mistake?
Not to good apparently, Ford will recall about 73,000 Escape SUVs and 16,000 Fusions because of engine fires. All the recalls involve 2013 models equipped with a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine, the automaker said.
Escape is not something you buy, it is what you do to survive owning a Ford. Ford Motor Co. will recall about 73,000 Escape SUVs and 16,000 Fusions because of engine fires. All the recalls involve 2013 models equipped with a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine, the automaker said.
WTH? Why did someone flag the message above as "spam?" Since when is it "spam" to ask if the reviewer tested a different engine? Especially since THAT'S the engine a lot of people will be interested in.
You can't blame them for offering a high cost / optioned model guys. Look at the fiasco they got themselves into with the new Taurus, Nobody wanted the low rent models they were pumping out at first so they had to go back and re-configure the car and add some pricier trim models! Plus, cost comparo's go right out the window when you are negotiating price with the salesman, we all know how that goes. Put that on top of the fact the nobody will be paying sticker price anyway. Its not bad....
For $37K, this vehicle SHOULD perform much better than the CX-5, CR-V and outdated RAV4. I'd like to see an apples-to-apples comparison where the price was consistent with the competition. Actually, InsideLine did compare the CR-V and Escape and they concluded the CR-v was better bang for the buck. I think if money isn't an obstacle, then the Escape is better but then again, if money isn't the problem you'd probably get a BMW or Audi CUV.
Went and sat in the new escape...Wanted to like it...But it felt VERY cramped...Center console is intrusive and hits your knee and the interior overall has a capsule like feel...While the interior looks futuristic it looks very cheap at the same time and it looks like something that will look dated in a couple of years...I'm sure it drives well and all but didn't like the interior at all.

Pricey with options, I think Ford is going to lose some customers to Honda. Configuring the cr-v and escape with similar tech, the ford comes out more expensive. Add to that the value of resale, and the ford comes up a bit short. Confusing product strategy...
This thing is way overpriced! $24,000 base gets you nothing standard. The feature ppl really want only come from the several chunky expensive packages ford confuses ppl with. Save your money and buy the all new 2013 hyundai santa fe! They give you what you want cheaper and standard.
Interior looks great. The exterior looks fucking stupid. And the price are you fucking kidding ford. $33k on avg at the dealers. No thanks. Go back to the drawing board keep the interior but change the exterior AND LOWER THE DAM PRICE!
1:26 pathetic cx5?....Hey steve have you driven the new 2014 cx5 with better gas mileage than this escape and a 2.5L engine. Not to mention it comes fully loaded at 29k over this pathetic ford escape at 37k. Did i mention that it doesnt have any recalls like the escape had when the car had a potential to light itself on fire? Oh and mazda has better reliability than ford. Hey can i pay u underneath the table to say good things about non american cars?
I looks god awful ugly. I wish it did not look korean and they kept it more chiseled. While I bet it is great on road, I would bet the previous generation would be better off road
Hopefully. Don't know when.

You picked a great place to film...I graduated from that fine institution! I believe I saw a shot of Stuyvesant Plaza in there too. Nice review Steve.

Steve, was your test Escape's color sterling gray? If so it looks much better in sun light than on the Ford website. Kodiak brown looks great too.
Great review Steve!!

How does this vehicle compare to the Kia Sportage SX? Similar power and amenities, just wondering what your take is on the comparison.

Driving one right now. Vid up next week.

I'll be watching it -- in the most competitive auto markets currently, compact crossover CUVs.
Yes it was.
Are you going to review the new focus st?
So how does this stack vs the Sportage SX in terms of performance CUv's?
Steve -- will you check the new Toyota RAV4?
nope thats the mazda tribute but it might be the cx-5 for this year
I love my 2013 escape
Whats wrong with skyactive and the automatic trans? Steve it just seems like everyone is so quick to jump on Fords ass for making a decent car if that. I test drove both of these cars alot before deciding to buy the 2014 cx5. You think i made a mistake?
Personally, I like the looks of this car and with it's options and specs, I see it being a much better buy than the Mazda.

cx5 is underpowered to some people, but overachived on fuel efficiency.

Hey, you're at my alma mater!

No mention of the 3 recalls it already has had?...
This is in my list and GMC terrain
Went and sat in the new escape...Wanted to like it...But it felt VERY cramped...Center console is intrusive and hits your knee and the interior overall has a capsule like feel...While the interior looks futuristic it looks very cheap at the same time and it looks like something that will look dated in a couple of years...I'm sure it drives well and all but didn't like the interior at all.
You kidding me!? The Escape looks MUCH better then that of the CX-5.
@SweetHubby82 I believe the plural for "Focus" is "Foci".
Steve should really review this car without the $15,000 upgrades!
I would be sold if the backseat had more legroom and the if the price was lower.
I like the look more then the Mazda I think.
CX-5 will get a new diesel in 2014. Not as much hp, but 200+ lb-ft. of torque. We'll see how it does here.
You mean way better -- that's okay. I agree, but this Escape Titanium is a little to pricey at $37k. The CX-5 is nice, but is seriously underpowered.

really nice car
Wow 37k for a small SUV? That is outrageous. I like the way it looks and I'm sure it's nice but the price needs to go down.
Looks are subjective so you both are right.
i think the rear looks exactly the same as the Mazda cx-5
the CX5 is better, it only needs a bigger engine option
for 37 k i'd rather get the new KIA Sorento coming out later this year or next year
the back looks like the back of a mazda cx 5
Pricey with options, I think Ford is going to lose some customers to Honda. Configuring the cr-v and escape with similar tech, the ford comes out more expensive. Add to that the value of resale, and the ford comes up a bit short. Confusing product strategy...
this looks like a fish from the front.sides look better than the cx 5 though
I disagree I think it looks why better then the mazda cx-5
'thank you euro ford' - usa ford
good lord 37k for a compact suv!
steve ignore the ignorants you are right about the cx5 being crap!
Cx5 is way too small for this class anyways, not to mention homely compared to this
September
If you know how to shop for a vehicle, you won't be paying sticker price.
Meh, I would get the Cx-5 over this. I dont really like the styling.
37k? I'd prefer a range rover evoque for 6k more!
SO not true! I'm as anti-tobacco as they come.
ford explorer looks best to me.
This thing is way overpriced! $24,000 base gets you nothing standard. The feature ppl really want only come from the several chunky expensive packages ford confuses ppl with. Save your money and buy the all new 2013 hyundai santa fe! They give you what you want cheaper and standard.
it looks like hyndai tucson
This is just an oversize Focus...
MIss the 2008-2012 model :(
Looks like the focus got fatter and taller.
Interior looks great. The exterior looks fucking stupid. And the price are you fucking kidding ford. $33k on avg at the dealers. No thanks. Go back to the drawing board keep the interior but change the exterior AND LOWER THE DAM PRICE!
its good because its european
the escape is a dying model. no more body on frame suvs anymore. shouldnt be a suv. just an oversized sedan imo.
