Most fantasy or shonen animes tend to exist on their own made up timelines and era, so as not be reliant on their realistic counterpart, being more close to science fiction than classic fantasy. Like fucking One Piece is on the age of piracy round 17 or 18th century and they have cyborgs, a government power in charge of the entire planet, pirate warlords ruling over territories varying from nation to continent-sized, amphibious vehicles, chemical warfare, phone, radar and camera-based technology made from modified snails. Though if you decide to tell a story in a fantasy world more grounded in reality like Lord of the Rings or Berserk, you'll obviously won't expect the characters to pull up a fucking gun or some factory manufactured clothes to go for a walk. It's really hard to tell what type of show HGS wanted to be.
Yes Thank you that makes so much more sense i always forget fantasy anime does that its probably why I never really enjoyed it I like fantasy shows that are grounded a bit in reality that way the world building makes sense
Yeah, it's not just anime, though. Many Fantasy stories are meant to be timeless, and not have a specific era. It just depends on the story, and how the writers incorporate it. Harry Potter, for example, is clearly fantasy, but because it's set in modern time, the clothing the characters wear don't feel jarring or out of place because of the time period that was established.
Even then Berserk’s style was just a mashup of many stylistic elements. The fashion in the universe tends to be a mish mash of elements from various historical clothes and even modern styles to a degree. The key is just to combine them in a way that makes it it’s own thing ya know.
Something I wanna appreciate in Rosemary's redesign, is that there seems to be a further emphasis that the sword clearly didn't belong to her initially. Compared to her, outside of the color scheme, the sword looks more refined and perfected in comparison to the rough and inexperienced Rosemary.
Thank you yeah I found it really weird that a sword that belongs to someone named lavander wasnt purple plus having the weapon really helps show that this weapon doesn't match rosemary so if she ever found out her mom was bad she can go have it changed to fit her
(Rant warning) I think they noticed this in the script-The black cat girl even says that Lavender’s sword is over Rose’s “skill set.” … But it’s true that the character design didn’t explain the sword thing at all, except maybe that the sword’s hilt was broken and put together
I know it doesn't have much to do with the subject, but I think it's so strange how students kill various creatures without hesitation, but are sad when a monster that tried to kill them dies
Yeah that honestly makes so sense like i know they where trying to help it since it didnt at that way in till it ate the rot but i highly dout they could have cured it also is it just me or did the sea type creatures having red blood bother you too
@@LovesArt23 To be fair a lot of sea creatures have red blood, but I do agree they could of have been miles more creative with their choices and made some cooler creatures with differently colored blood, or all out weird sparkly blood, acid blood, blood that acts as sticky glue, anything really, just not plain red for everything would of have been nice
It's the same energy as the protagonist cutting down/crippling HUNDREDS of mooks who definitely don't get up again, but suddenly they can't kill the bad guy because "I'll be just as bad as him" 💀
The only complaint I have about this is that the designs would be too hard to animate. They are absolutely gorgeous and such an improvement, and they’d be perfect for a comic or the like, but I would die if someone showed me these designs and said “animate this”. Again, these designs are such an improvement and I love them, I would risk watching the show if they looked like this. I can’t wait for the part 2
That was my thought too, particularly with sage, Just looking at those flowers on her dress without any landmarks to track them in movement makes my hand hurt
I just had a super cool idea that Rosemary's outfit changes ALOT after she figures out her mom was bad Like maybe she just straight up cuts her hair like Sage- and even gets Basil to forge her new armour and sword to step away from her mom
Not gonna lie i love that idea me and my friend where just gonna have her remake her mothers old sword but I love a complete change better plus is would help match sage once rose got to that point to show that rose has finally changed and grown enough to be sages equal
The art always came across as too bland and a lot of the characters looked similar. There are a lot of weird inconsistencies too. As someone who's been working on costume design concepts for theatre in the past, one of the main rules is to do tons of research on the setting and time period. Finding references of people, portraits, art, etc from that time. Depending on the genre you can get away with not having 100% historically accurate clothes but the modern is jarring. I don't want to assume but I can't help but the crew was focusing more on a show looking cute and marketable than actually putting time and effort into it. Hence why the "trailer" was focused more on "girl power" and "diversity" than the actual product. Nothing wrong inherently with those themes but it came across as toxic and forced. Anyway, I love how you designed Thyme the wood elf markings is so cool.
A i worked in the costume department too and yeah there tons of period themed shows and movies that mix different types of fashion like Disney's live action cinderella had a mix of 1950 and mideevil fashion and I blended so well beacuse of the time and research plus fantasy fashion is super fun to create you can really create alot with it but the shows back inforth with modern to renaissance is just so confusing like there alot of ways to incorporate modern fashion but they made the jump way to fast and Thank so much
A lot of the main cast look like background characters imo. Maybe the kind of background character you'd look at and think "oh they're cute" but that's about it.
Stop it 😳😳😳 but lol im pretty sure its cause the creator had these design for so long he didnt want them to change much which is kinda bad mindset to have when working on a show like yes your the creator but audience and staff opinon do matter which i why i think other shows lile the owl house and steven universe did so well
How I would fix it: Rosemary is a headstrong girl who doesn't think before she acts. So her character arc is basically "with great power comes great responsibility" Sage is a someone who wants to make friends but the problem is she's too shy Paisley is a kid who wants to be more than a blacksmith but she's always picked on because of how short she is, so she has to show everyone height doesn't matter And Thyme is basically the self concealed anti-heroine that has to get used to being with friends and gets her stone cold heart thawed by her new friends
I feel like sage would be a self appointed intellectual type who makes it a big deal that she only deals in facts, but behind closed doors is trying to reconcile the fact that she has emotions that don't make logical sense. Like being friends with Rosemary, who's dunbass-ness is covered by sages know it all attitude, but Rosemary's simple way of looking at life helps pull sage off of the high horse she has built for herself and learn how to make real human bonds that have emotion involved.
It'd be very interesting to see a character with a backstory like Rosemary's take a different approach to her mother's disappearance and legacy. You often see kids feel overwhelmed by the compulsion to uphold their parents' great reputation as heroes, but what Rosemary felt more entitled to respect because she inherited the sword? Her impulsive attitude derives from her assumption that becoming a high guardian will be easy, and when it isn't, she has to grow
So basically high guardian spice should be urban fantasy rather than just fantasy. The mix in clothing styles could've been because they're in the middle of a shift in culture as new ideas are becoming more common and the old ideas are being pushed to the back. But instead of it only being new they could still have the old clothing style and such as a way to remember and honor the old traditions. Either that or the modern type clothing could be brand new concepts and becoming a trend which is why they have those. Not to mention Rosemary's dress could've just been her basic clothing and after entering the academy she'd be corrected on how she should actually dress because she is an energetic kid with a rose tinted view of the world and how her job would be like so it makes sense that she wouldn't know how to dress properly or maybe it's because her family is poor like you said so they can't afford to put her in a full warrior's armor set so she made do with what she had. Tl:Dr this show is a mess and could've done so much better but nope.
I feel like this could’ve worked so well with rosemary and sages original costumes, like they come from a older town that still runs on old magic , and when they finally get to lindgaurd they look/feel out of place being new to a big city, with new magic, and a more modern way of life, and eventually their styles would be updated from fantasy to urban fantasy
Honestly would have been more authentic to do medieval to colonial, mostly because I hate hate HATE when shows mix in so much modern things with old times stuff Like guys, you’re skipping over so much history You have to go through LMNOP to get to Z Or drop the medieval all together and make it straight up modern and have certain towns, villages keep certain traditions Like the city could be modern, the village would be medieval or colonial and towns would be like 19 or 20th century
I really like the idea of turning parsley into a boy too because in the og she's kinda the "heart" of the team and it's not a role given to male characters a lot so it's definitely a nice change :D
@@ArturoLopez-ly2pn And extra points to make male Parsley uninterested in romance with the other main characters, because it's too common for the one boy or girl in a group of the other gender to be a simple love interest by the end of the series.
Granted, this is the team of 100% female writers and one of which who posts "Kill all men" and the like, and the show goes out of the way to talk about how bad men are, so I doubt that they would give a male Parsley the proper development
A Western “anime” done right, which was interesting for all ages was avatar. There didn’t have to be swearing or gore for it to be engaging it was just done right,
Those are my sentiments of Samurai Jack. A show that references Western and Eastern animation,Kurisawa films plus star wars and Conan style fantasy. I've never seen a show chock-full of so much
Parsley, Snapdragon, Amaryllis and that slime boy. Their the only ones who are interesting. I also recommend you watch Jamie de jonge since her animatics and rewriting a few scenes from original show makes me wanna make her the writer of high guardian spice. Besides, there are a lot of potential in the show but they wasted it. It's not great that the quote from one of the mc said"guys don't talk about their feelings and don't have friendships"emotional wise. I felt angry about that. Even the apologizing statement seems so forced somehow.
Especially since the show awkwardly kind of _vindicated her_ later on? Most of the male characters are either unimportant or one-note jerks, and Snapdragon turns out to have gender dysphoria as if "actually Sage made them realise they weren't a boy!!" Which, obviously if they want to write a trans storyline, fine! Go ahead! But why did they have to _reinforce gender roles_ to do it, from a "strong and independent" main character no less, then pat themselves on the back? They somehow made it offensive in BOTH directions!
@@LovesArt23 Mhm! Plus their names are lyrics in the name ‘Scarborough Fair’: “Are you going to Scarborough Fair?” “Rosemary Sage Parsley and Thyme” UGH I was so annoyed the creators didn’t do anything clever with that naming scheme.
@@Cheetahgirl_Studios oh yeah i heard they where referencing that songs I havent listened to it yet but yeah you like they could use the melody for the theme song would probably be way better that what they have now
Since the show had a weird mix of medieval/modern, I feel like it would've been more interesting if the the setting had a similar theme🤔 Like instead of a generic rpg town that looks underdeveloped, maybe they could've done something else like,, modern day streets of London ??? (With much less technology of course-) I also think having that would show the contrast between Lyngard _(probably wrong spelling but eh..)_ and the small town of Pebble. It would've definitely made the first episode more interesting. I mean cmon, if they have old and new magic, I'm sure they could do the same with other world building aspects-
They could have gone with a more steampunk/magi-tech aesthetic, like A Series of Unfortunate Events but less dark and more magic? That would have worked well imo.
i actually have that going on in my own story. but i haven't decide what other conflict instead of a king using magic to create a deadly weapon all that jazz-
@@LovesArt23 It's one of those cases where it really helps to go through the etymological steps of a word (though that *can* result in confusion at times): artificer < artifice ('arti-fis).
@@LovesArt23 I just realized something: having a dwarf pursue becoming an artificer *_really_* fits the whole Old-versus-New Magic angle the show was generally going for (which I feel is also where the Shades Dudes thing was going for, compared to the Maiden-Mother-Crone triad going on at the academy - do take note of both the get-up differences *_and_* the genders).
Eleves are predominantly non-binary since in dnd they can change their gender at will by their connection with trees, so it makes a lot of sense for Thyme to be enby! Also I love the markings and hair, really lovely
I kinda agree with you with making at least one of the characters male. If your main cast only has one gender regardless if it's male or female or non-binary folk, that's not really diverse or inclusive as you may think it is.
I love them! The colors, the outfits, those tiny little details are just perfect! I'll never understand how a studio full of people weren't able to make memorable characters but a bunch of individual artists (in your case with a bit of help from your roommate) have been able to create so many different versions of these characters! Like, it sucks that the internet has a new version of "New Warriors" (If you've never heard of it, it's basically what High Guardian Spice was trying to do they had 5 people that were made to take back insults, and show that you can be quirk and still be a superhero and "Look at how inclusive we are with our one non binary character and two black characters!") but hey, at least artists have something to do if they hit artblock, right? I don't know where this comment is going, just amazing art, great designs, and I can't wait for part 2!
Thank you and yeah when i heard it took 3 years for this show to be made I was shocked at how many corners where cut and how weird looking the characters look like the creator of the show has a really good list of previous jobs so it was kinda weird how uninspired the characters where since hes had the designs for years but maybe he was so used to the designs he didnt care how unlikeable they where
Making hair for black characters is really fun when you study it, there are so many unique styles which sure you can put on another races but it looks so naturally cool on black characters specificlly, so when people don't take advantage of this and give their black characters plain straight hairstyles it bums me out to see
There's an episode of Craig of the Creek where the kids are imagining an alternate universe, and Craig has a fade. It blew my mind that they made it look so good! I highly recommend this show in general, but that episode has so many great moments of characterization.
Right, so, The reason people were mad and saying “It’s a cartoon, it doesn’t belong on Crunchyroll” is because the creators and platform were calling it an “anime”. Anime is just Japanese animation, not a genre, high guardians spice was produced in America. A lot of anime fans were very unhappy that the main legal anime streaming service was mislabelling the content they themselves where making and there where some controversy concerning the platform not supporting Japanese animators and producing this show instead
ya know what this is, this is literally when ppl are like "i wanna make a world inspired by this era!" an then they proceed to NOT do research and look up refs and it drives me up the wall
I think the reason that some people don’t like all girl casts, or all boy casts, is cuz it’s kinda unrealistic? Like in every friend group you always have at least one girl or at least one boy. Even if you don’t like them they’re there, or adjacent.
Couldn’t be further from the truth . Our school is basically popular guy group, unpopular guy group. Then popular girl group and unpopular girl grou p , the end and no micing
Thank you and yeah I always find it weird when you cant see a characters ears but with how big rosemarys pig tails are it not unlikely that we wouldn't see her ears
@@LovesArt23 if they decided to go for a fantasy deconstruct this would’ve been perfect to explore. Parsley-So how old r u? First year? Parnelle-10. Everyone looks at him-…WHAT!? Parnelle-What? I mean, we’re all technically still children. Everyone-CRAP HES RIGHT! Heck maybe perhaps the reason Cal’s mean to him is to push him out of risking his life in the Academy
As much as we don't like J.K. Rowling, at least she knew how to worldbuild and found a way for them to have medieval AND modern clothes in the same universe and time setting. [edit] Absolutely LOVE what you did, especially with Rosemary and Sage! I think Sage is my favorite out of these redesigns, but that might be because I'm biased toward healers. c': Also looking forward to part two! I gave a sub! (tbh Snapdragon is my fav c':)
Right I may not like her personally but her work is very thought out which is what i always look for in fantasy films and shows because you can blend fantasy and modern arcane, owlhouse, a few ghibli movies have even done it and they all did fantastic jobs with the research and thought put into them
THANK YOU for pointing out how anachronistic everything is. I have literally no idea what time period the setting is based on. There’s everything and every style from antiquity to medieval to Renaissance to 1800’s (steampunk???) and SO MUCH IS JUST MODERN. WHAT.
Immediately I’ve been crafting a way tighter narrative for all of the core leads: • I kinda like the idea of Rosemary losing her mom really young (maybe her dad could go out looking for her and is presumed either lost, captured or dead) and she and Sage were basically raised like sisters from that point with Sage feeling like she’d always have to clean up after Rose’s messes but Rose seeing it as having her best friend as a safety net and wanting to use the skills as a guardian to either find her parents or, hopefully, fight the bad guys keeping them prisoner, but maybe she gets hurt or gets one of her friends hurt in a fight and is forced to approach things from a more strategic mindset and not jump in feet first and worry about everything else after. • Sage, of course, wants to go to High Guardian Academy to study magic with the knowledge that Old Magic is this sacred art but finds that New Magic is a lot easier to use. She’s been dealing with Rosemary’s antics since they were little, little girls but knows that she has a good heart and always means well but maybe learns to loosen her grip on the old ways and maybe seeing that she doesn’t have to babysit Rosemary. • my personal favorite is Parsley (or the male Parsley, rather): I’d kinda go with the breaking away from steadfast traditional blacksmithing and have him wanting to create either a completely new weapon distinctly of his creation (given the weapons we’ve seen, maybe constructing a firearm or some type of mobile cannon) and instantly gravitating to being an Artificer for how it combines the blacksmithing they already perfected from their family but also infusing it with magic. The kicker being Parsley is so used to using slower, more patient methods that they initially can’t keep up with the quick-thinking Artificer methods of grabbing scrap metal or whatever they have on the fly and whipping up some disposable gadgets or easy weapons. Plus, gives them better synergy with the rest of the main cast. • Thyme (slash-Malabar) is one that I kinda struggled with a bit but I thought about going with maybe making them more isolated-maybe go with something as prideful and nationalistic as Shenhau from Black Lagoon and have them only speaking in native Elvish-until maybe Rosemary or someone saves them from some dangerous mission or something, or confronts them. They’ll reveal, not only do they speak English, but they just hate people because of them corrupting their forest or killing their dad or something and so they pathologically remain isolated and only want to learn how to deal with the rot that’s effecting their home. Of course, the obvious theming of solving things together and not being in the fight alone (especially if the Rot is connected to Rosemary’s mother’s disappearance somehow), we can have Malabar slowly warming up to the rest of the group before joining up; maybe have some closer connection with boy-Parsley (doesn’t have to be a love interest thing, but more of a confidant situation where Malabar is better at thinking on their feet and gets really invested in his idea of a ranged weapon that shoots even farther and faster projectiles than a bow). Great designs overall, looks absolutely spectacular, though I kinda feel Sage’s new look might be a touch too detailed with all the little embroidery but I love the cottagecore aesthetic.
Update: this got me to start crafting a whole new cast around them, including new races, new characters, and even overhauling the curriculum of High Guardian Academy (it’s a bit closer to Hunter x Hunter than Little Witch Academia, but the setting and storyline of the original are so generic that *ANYTHING* is a step up)
Making Thyme a nonbinary makes so much sense to me. Elves have always been depicted as ancient, wise and anlightened beings so they might percieve the concept of gender as something unnecessary for their society.
It's also a little sad because nonbinary representation often comes in the form of aliens, robots, or other otherworldly creatures; seeing a human use any nb pronouns can be rare, which is just a pity.
Bruh as a girl im always scared to voice out that I find all female cast or female protagonist boring, cuz ppl are gonna say I have internalized sexism💀 I prefer male protagonist or all male casts because I LOVE seeing men be comfortable and close with each other, even if the story has ZERO romance😗 ...its always more refreshing and fun to watch in my opinion. ALSO...non-binary thyme looks so damn good😭
Me too growing up I could never really enjoy all female type shows the characters where either very romance opposed or just way to hyper/quirky and im just not that type of person but I'm happy to see more shows are branching into new types of female characters though ill probably still be a male character fan first I just identify with them more
The only complaint I have is when the writers have to make the one boy the boyfriend of one of the girls boys can be platonic friends with girls without wanting to date them aka less Sailor moon more Stevan universe
@@jennybrown7834 I always thought that too... which is why I was really disappointed when star Vs the forces of evil turned into a romantic, love triangle, drama series☹️I REALLY loved watching star and Marco just.....vibe
Only problem I have with this critique is about the show's fashion. I DO agree that it has serious problems that need to be addressed, but I disagree about the 'medieval fashion' points. DnD characters don't actually fit into irl medieval fashion because it's FANTASY. Fashion in a fantasy world can be whatever you want it to be, so it really doesn't have to match up to the real live medieval period. Not to mention that the medieval period covers an enormous chunk of time and spans all kind of fashion trends in just a single spot in Europe, not to mention the entire world. The real problem with the show's fashion is it's lack of consistency. You do touch on that, but I don't think you really recognized that it was the main problem. The fashion in a fantasy world can be whatever you want it to be, AS LONG as it's logically consistent. But that also leaves room for a lot of in-world variation between clothing styles, attributing to differences in the people's culture, needs, resources, and technological levels. The level of variation in HGS doesn't work because it's very jarring for characters wearing clearly modern style clothing, presumably made with modern resources and tech levels, to be walking around next to someone wearing leather battle armor who should presumably have access to the same stuff the first character does. If the world has the technology to produce the clothes we see in the modern irl world, why are they still wearing leather gear and not swat armor, or bullet proof vests? I could go more in depth, but I think I've illustrated the point.
Love the male Parsley, I'm a sucker for amazing hardcore bad- *youtube wont let me say this part* blacksmith designs! ( Love Thyme's redesign aswell, I like their's the most)
Sage is mt favorite redesign, simply because you gave her more than three colors lmao. Her entire wardrobe is purple like, who wears a single color??? But you gave her yellow and green, which looks very cool. I also like the plant theming in her redesign.
Oh my god. I totally agree with the all girl cast thing! Like Steven universe, sure you have Steven( and I guess Greg) but it would have been cool if at least one of the gems was a boy
Yes thank you finally someone said it I mean there aliens but all of them identify as females was there no gem that was like nah I dont like that i mean they had a gem that was in love with its self why couldn't there be a male presenting gem
These redesigns are SUCH an upgrade in terms of appeal, sensibility and characterization from the original designs! Can tell you really know your stuff!
I do like the idea that your design for Rosemary is more battle-oriented than cute but impractical for battle. However, if they wanted the story to take a darker tone, then I like the idea of these little girls starting out with cutesy yet impractical design before changing into a more battle-worn design as the series progressed. After all, they're still kids/teens(?) new to real battle, so them worrying about trivial details like appearances. After they partake in their first real battles, they can either quickly drop their focus on keeping up cute appearances (if the battles are life-threatening) or gradually drop it (if the battles simply more difficult than they initially expected); they don't need ugly designs, just more practical designs. If they want a more casual or light-hearted story, they can keep it cutesy with the excuse of "the magic makes up for the difficulty in dealing with appearances, so it's no big deal that they're cute in battle" or something. If it's kid-friendly, then stuff like that doesn't really bother me as much. Still, a good choice in design doesn't help poor characterization and story.
I love all of them. They're designs, outfits and facial details (like the scars and markings) really tell they're stories well. And Basil is now my new husbando
Your idea of having blacksmiths be artificers is also basically the first idea I had when seeing that part of the show, and if anything that, and another issue I'll get into, is imho obvious proof that the creators really don't know their DnD, and really should. The second issue is that there is 4 classes, instead of 5. So if you recall back in 4th edition WotC tried to oversimplify the classes, and fucked up and we all got angry, but while I will admit it was a brazen oversimplification in that all classes should fit within a spectrum instead of being part of 1 role, it is true that generally rpgs have 5 roles, although some might say 6 if you separate the "face" from the "skillmonkey", tho that was the least of 4th eds issues... that edition plain sucked. Anyway point is, in RPGs you generally have 5 (maybe 6 if you consider the face) roles: -Tank: the meatshield. -Support: mostly healers, can also add other stuff that helps their pals. -Control: area attacks and effects, basically the mage. -Hitter: BIG DAMAGE -Skillmonkey: the guy that opens the locks, builds the bridges, and gets the people places. Now again, imho rps are way better if classes are on a spectrum where most of them are hybrids, and you can see this in 5e where say rogues have gone from being skillmonkeys to being also hitters, depending on subclass artificers and bards are many roles on top of skillmonkey, and rangers are... completely useless. Yeah they really didn't do that class well. BUT, with this being a SCHOOL there is good reason to have 5 "classes" representing these 5 roles in a wide sort of way. And it would make sense for a show where you want each character to have a role within the main group. And by "wide" I mean you'll see all 5 classes have at least a bit of other roles. So I would've done it as follows: Tank-Rosemary's Class: Man At Arms. Much like DnD Fighter's not only would this class be the mainline fighter, but also train in strategy and battle tactics to lead the rest of the group in battle from the front, akin to medieval knights. Support-Sage's Class: Alchemist: while they are the traditional "wizard" or "mage", with old and new magic and how they seem to be used you could make the point that they are alchemists in origin while new magic uses more staffs and artifice, so while they still have their old name, the class is shifting, which would also serve to represent Sage's internal turmoil, and besides they do really still spend a lot of time with cauldrons. Their role isn't just healers, although that would be very important, but also making all sorts of other potions and gems, including the terraspheres, (which seem like the philosopher's stone if you think about it) hence why with new magic their place in the world is shifting, much like alchemist guilds gave rise to the industrial revolution. Skillmonkey-Parsley's Class: Smiths. Previously just smiths and sappers (combat engineers), with the advent of new magic they are adapting to their new role Runesmithing and making artifacts to help other classes with their jobs, again, the world is changing and so are they. Overall, their job is still mostly to be the ones breaking locks, building bridges and repairing gear, but that role is expanding rapidly with the advent of terraspheres. (Much like the role of combat engineers got wider and wider during the early modern era) Hitter-Thyme's Class: Ranger. Much like their namesake, their job is to scout ahead, know their nature, help gather food and herbs, as such they're the specialists in stealth, agility and ranged weapons. Control-Slime Boy's Class: Musicians. Tho battle standard bearers and preachers also fill this role depending on what time period and culture you wanna depict. While they would certainly play a support role, historically battle music and heraldry played and even bigger role in demoralizing the enemy than in increasing allied morale, so the "cutting words" kinda bard is actually the most historically accurate. Also important to note that on top of performance they'd be taught about heraldry and the like, much like the pages that filled this role during the early modern age, so they'd also be a bit of a "face" of sorts. But morale, both alied and enemy, would be the bulk of their role. Since Slime Boy is a later year character the group would need a 5th, new character. If we look at the 5 classes, not only do they depict the 5 rpg roles well but it pretty much fulfills all the non-combat roles typically done by soldiers: -officer -medic -engineer -ranger -performer So you can see how an adventuring party would want to have these roles. As it stands with the 4 classes, in this "anime" we have: -fighter -mage that does EVERYTHING that actually matters -fighter that also sometimes fixes stuff -fighter, but also worried about nature, except this is never really relevant to the plot. Just... come on.
Man you brought back alot of memories 😂 but yeah there line up doesnt make much sense know that you've said it everyones pretty much overlapping each other and thats never fun ive played a big party before and found having two bards was not a fun experience 😂😂😂
They blamed everything on budget yet here you are doing designs that make sense for free. I absolutely hate the idea of "fixing" but this redesign does look great.
Rosemary original design with her umbrella skirt is very wind resistant , how is she supposed to move fast and dodge ? She look like shes going to a dance hall 😂 , i get it if maybe she was a magic girl but a warrior? Heck no. Nice redesign 👍 it had more soul into it
Oooh I love these! Tbh everyone says that Rosemary is supposed to be a Paladin, but I feel like she’s a Fighter with an emphasis on great-weapon fighting, big swords, big damage, babey. As for Sage, she seems like she’s still figuring out what Wizard she wants to be but if she’s using healing spells maybe she’s going to be leaning towards either cleric or Druid which can open up a story line on how “you don’t need to figure out who you are right away”. I love that Basil, aka new Parsley, is the one having to pick up being the glue in the group like no one can get along without him and that’s a good potential episode of him being tired of being the rock and the group putting forth the effort to be better friends to each other and taking care of themselves. I like Malibar’s look and I agree with you on Thymes hair, skin, and hair texture cause to be honest, I wish she had a better design but you nailed it with this one!
The redesigns look amazing! I love the little details you added to everyone, especially on Sage's outfit. I can't wait to see more. As for High Guardian Spice being for mature audience: the violence in the show is just excessive blood spills and the strong language is barely present (which makes it feel even more out of place when it *is* present). As for innuendos, I only recall the "we go to the same parties" scene which feels like an adult joke in a Disney-Pixar movie that is vague enough to fly over kids' heads. I can't see any reason at the moment for the show to be rated for mature audience. Remove the blood spills (or at least mitigate them) and remove the 3-4 curse words they sneaked in, they are unnecessary.
I really love these redesigns, but I’d personally keep everyone’s name, because even though they’re not actually named after spices, I will admit I do like that they’re a reference to Scarborough Fair (Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme)
There's a lot of tropes they could've built on, the repeat style you showed in those anime examples are showing that their designs WHILE GENERIC could've helped the story if they play around with the story. Such as how the main characters of "Parasyte" and "Yuri On Ice" play with the hair styles being slicked back or some changes with the generic anime boy with brown eyes design. I just wish they played around with the world more and make these characters feel more like they actually do exist in the fantasy setting.
First things first, love the designs. Very lovely and well done. Second, I think the reason people don't really complain about anime doing it is because there has always been less body and facial variety in anime as opposed to western cartoons and cartoons have been heading towards a more samey face style when there was significantly more style variety before. Like the 90s and 00s had a ton of style variety even tho there was still an over arching style sense happening. Not the 80s tho, the 80s are the pinnacle of samey same, similar to anime. Thirdly, I do find it annoying when there are so many characters in anime that look the same. Wasn't too bad back then but is becoming more of a problem now. Basically, I'm sure there are people who complain about anime doing this too, they're just more resigned about it since anime has always been bad about diversity in any shape and form.
HGS is such a fascinating show. Despite the it's failure, it have generated countless discussion and "fan" content, which are far more entertaining than the original show itself. Several commentary youtuber had gotten huge boost to their channel just for making HGS content. And the funny thing is it would certainly not be as popular if it had been just mediocre. The other day I saw a video titled some thing like "HGS season 2 release date confirm?" Of course it was just a meme video but everyone in the comments was disappointed that we're not actually going to have another season. You can have any opinion on the show but you can not deny that this not the show that we deserve, but the one we NEED. We need it, because we love hating it.
I love this! My only issue is the name changes. So the reason theyre named Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme is because its actually a reference to the so g Scarborough fair!!
Wait, what about Aster? the boy who was Rosemary's first love interest? I think he could be better, in several things, because the series wanted him to be bad at everything! But look what I found about his name: Aster - Positive Points: Communication, Organization, Discipline, Entrepreneurial and adventurous spirit and Talent - Negative Points: Dishonesty, Arrogance, Thirst for power, Shyness and Materialism. - COLOR: Pink grants power, practicality, objectivity, justice and material success. - DOMINANT STAR: Uranus symbolizes Change. This is the planet of creativity and impulsiveness. Uranus gives those it influences a lot of intelligence and romanticism. These people are very idealistic and independent and have a great capacity to take on changes, without fear or trepidation. They make decisions very quickly. Uranus symbolizes freedom and at the same time individuality and is related to social and humanitarian aspects. - LUCKY NUMBER: The number 9 means that you are humanitarian, generous. This person has the attitude of an older brother, attracts everyone's love and practices kindness. Its name comes from Greek and means star, due to its shape that resembles celestial bodies. It is very similar to the daisy, as they are from the same family. In the language of flowers, it symbolizes love, loyalty, wisdom, light and power.
I want to give each of them a smooch on their foreheads for being so adorable and beautiful. And to slap the originals because how ridiculously boring they are
These are really fantastic! Especially Sage. I just love all the little details you put into that outfit. That's some cottage-goals. I'm only now realizing that my own design drawings for the girls are just.. the girls with personality switches lol. This did give me some inspiration to get to work on those! Thank you so much. Also I'm taking braid notes. Weird thing to compliment but that is a very pretty but simple braid.
Thank you sage was my favorite to work on and yeah I'm not a fan of detailed braids they look cool in real life but not so much animated lol plus its easy I'm just drawing hearts the whole time 😂😂😂😂
I feel like the medieval and modern crossover could have easily be fixed by just actually doing world building which this team obviously did not do. Like the world could literally be the same idea as Onward with a magical world that has gone into modern times. Maybe some people wear older style clothes depending on their religion, class, ideology, etc. Like there are so many ways they could explain it away
@@hopesauce3324 right plus itd bulk up the need for more species type characters cause weirdly enough theres like way to many human characters and elf characters that look human if your not really looking
I've seen a LOT of redesign videos for HGS (all better than the show's designs) but I gotta say, your Sage design is probably one of my favorite interpretations so far. Part of her character is that she comes from a very "traditional" background of magic and this design FEELS like it portrays that idea. Also, LOVE the Thyme design, especially the outfit and side side braids.
Yes! Making Persley a boy, so having a diverse team not full girls, and also having a shortie boy. Although the variety of type of background characters, I don't remember find a short boy, well, the only guys I remember was Snap, Slime boy and that Link ripoff xd but still, always makes me happy to see more of us, pikmin guys team 😎 Or maybe is just that Parsley was my fav character and I'm proyecting myself in your lovely redesing XD tho nice reinterpretation, a lot more interesting and consistent with the world theme and so detalied but not saturated, really cute, in my way to watch the second part papu
Love the designs! I feel that they fit the characters so much better! As I expected, Thyme is so much more interesting with her new design, and I fell in love immediately. I can't wait for Amaryllis and Snapdragon!! ❤❤❤
Thank you amd me too Amaryllis anf snapdragon got the works mostly cause I'm pretty sure there familys are super rich and cause I love a fabulous mini villains
As much as I love the redesigns, I’m kinda sad that you changed the genders :( especially Parsley, think it would’ve been cool to see a girl doing something traditionally masculine and take pride in it. You’re entitled about your opinion on all girl casts, but personally I think that the cast being “all girls” isn’t the problem, it’s usually because people make them fight “cutely” and make them overly reliant on a male side character and it made me happy to see all female gems in SU because they were strong, they were feminine and masculine, and were really humanized. Okay, little rant over!! Keep up the good work!! :DD
There's no knights either, you should definitely have knights in a fantasy like setting. I would expect some of the students wearing some Knight's armor or leather armor than modern day student uniforms
5:53 my best guess on why the calarts style is more complained about then anime/80s cartoons is because they are a more detailed style. They are meant to come off more realistic/closer to reality and that kinda means inevitably some characters looking similar because it’s closer to real life so no major exaggeration or etc. additionally we are seeing the effort into getting the designs as detailed as possible so we are more willing to forgive same face. With calarts style it’s way more simplistic or less realistic so when we see same face it comes off as less effort is being put in to it, like your avatar is based off hellavaboss/hazbin hotel which also has a less realistic style but the character designs are really varied from person to person but if it was less detail mixed with simplistic design that would get at people. Anyway that’s my best guess as to why the cal art situation is scene more negatively
Yeeea, the contrast between the characters and background just makes it seem like the background is a green screen lol. I'm woman and I also like a mixed cast, I prefer the main to be male, which is what I draw a lot
Lol me too ive never really connected with female main characters since they didnt act the way i did or over acted the tomboy trope so male leads where always fun to watch cause they where not as in your face if that makes sense lol
Honestly, i HATE the 'a character needs to be 100% like you so you can connect with it' mentality. It's like saying 'My personality is [gender/sexuality/race/...]'.
Fun fact at 5:47-5:50 the two characters shown are created from the same mangaka Hiro Mashima. The one on the left is from rave master while the one on the right is from fairy tail. He likes to add Easter Eggs from his series for his fans
ok I recently watched the entire show and personally I don't hate it I still want to see what happens next but I do agree that the fashion could have been so much better if they tried blending modern with medieval era. Like Sage or those who use old magic could have an older style and for Amaryllis she can have more modern elements with her fashion. and if they wanted the school uniforms to be a thing I think their obstacle course outfits could have worked better at least the top but thats just me. Anyway I love your designs and I agree with everything you said in this and your other HGS videos.
Idk why but looking at your Rosemary redesign just brings me joy. She looks so happy 🥺 the og designs were really generic but wow you knocked this out of the park
I think thyme was the most insufferable character of them all 😂 she's the weakest and meanest of all. And she's pissed off all the time but somehow they still want her around, I saw your redesign and it became a great character suddenly, it's still an archer elf but this one even if is the weakest of the group, seems serene and full of wisdom, they may be the strategist of the group and for who Rosemary doesn't end up dead 😂 amazing job!
Reminder: The only reason why the animation looks very jarring in High guardian spice was because in a interview, the creator explains how crunchy roll first allowed him to make it as a comic, only to get permission to suddenly change it into a series.
I love the redesigns! It actually makes me want to hear the story of each character and it show so much diversity I love those kind of detail such as the cottage core inspired outfit that bring witch vives, the armor that looks more practical as for a battle or the elf clothe design as well as a COMPLETE AND NECESSARY change to their features being taller, having a more noticeable curly hair, THE VALLASLIN as well as to the vibes of an wood elf, it does give the impression of being in a medieval fantasy world! I really love it
These designs are way way WAY better than the ones in the "anime" (god it's so not an anime, Teen Titans 2003 looks more like an anime pfft). Your points about the appropriate clothing for said era is something I needed to hear as well. I was struggling with my 1900s inspired story: mainly the fashion of the era. Since it suppose be action-esque I want them to wear somewhat battle ready but also fashionable as there's a class system going on. Ahh I hope I'm making sense but you points about making it consistent and at least give a nod to the era (and not jump centuries) is helping me out to. So thank you!
I may be one of the few viewers tuning in who actually likes the show, but I still got excited to see the redesign possibilities & they are truly epic.
I love how LIVELY these designs are. You can really see distinguished characters from different races/professions and different upbringing and cultures, and it actually feels like these are separate characters with personality. I adore these so much!!
I love your version of Sage, she looks really cute and i could easily think she practice an specific magic and not just "witches things" like the original. The body shows that she's not strong, but the magic staff gives you the sign that she's powerful in other ways. 17:07 i feel that girl 😗🤜
I love the designs you did. You making Sage darker skinned is accurate since according to the wiki she is darker skinned. Also don't feel bad I'm a girl who also isn't a fan of an all girl cast and I like more mixture.
17:00 There's nothing wrong with not liking an all girl cast. Sometimes when they do that it is pretty boring. Also I hate when there are hardly any guys in an all girl cast show. Even when they are they're either bullies or just a love interest for the main characters. Anyway, these designs are super awesome. You really know your stuff. You could be a great character designer.
It's really interesting hearing how much thought you put into the characters and WHO they actually are, and then incorporated that into their designs. I think you put in more thought alone than the original team of designers did. Questions even cropped up that could have led to some interesting scenes or lore in the show. What a shame.
O
What gramar is? I not know
Yeah, it's not just anime, though.
O
I know it doesn't have much to do with the subject, but I think it's so strange how students kill various creatures without hesitation, but are sad when a monster that tried to kill them dies
Yeah that honestly makes so sense like i know they where trying to help it since it didnt at that way in till it ate the rot but i highly dout they could have cured it also is it just me or did the sea type creatures having red blood bother you too
@@LovesArt23 it also bothers me
@@LovesArt23 To be fair a lot of sea creatures have red blood, but I do agree they could of have been miles more creative with their choices and made some cooler creatures with differently colored blood, or all out weird sparkly blood, acid blood, blood that acts as sticky glue, anything really, just not plain red for everything would of have been nice
It's the same energy as the protagonist cutting down/crippling HUNDREDS of mooks who definitely don't get up again, but suddenly they can't kill the bad guy because "I'll be just as bad as him" 💀
how about sending people to subdue a monster when the test to see who was ready was about killing a monster? that's kind of.... odd.
Precisely my thoughts...they are gorgeous designs, but animating this would be a pain in the behind 💀
That was my thought too, particularly with sage, Just looking at those flowers on her dress without any landmarks to track them in movement makes my hand hurt
Well you could mix animating and tweening so I think its possible
Yeah.
I think if they used rigs for the characters then maybe it could work.
I just had a super cool idea that Rosemary's outfit changes ALOT after she figures out her mom was bad
Like maybe she just straight up cuts her hair like Sage- and even gets Basil to forge her new armour and sword to step away from her mom
Not gonna lie i love that idea me and my friend where just gonna have her remake her mothers old sword but I love a complete change better plus is would help match sage once rose got to that point to show that rose has finally changed and grown enough to be sages equal
@@LovesArt23 yess exactly
Nice idea!

It's underrated. I plan that if I make a show/comic, the hot/badass character will be a short chubby guy.
Chubby girls are cute too.
Basil is amazing.
@@cadence_2463 Who's Basil?
(You mean the one from Omori?)
WHY COULDNT THESE BE THE DESIGNS?😭 THEY LOOK SO AWSOME AND UNIQUE AND IT WOULD GAVE THE SHOW A MORE ICONIC LOOK!
Stop it 😳😳😳 but lol im pretty sure its cause the creator had these design for so long he didnt want them to change much which is kinda bad mindset to have when working on a show like yes your the creator but audience and staff opinon do matter which i why i think other shows lile the owl house and steven universe did so well
EXACTLY if it looked like this with some better writing and better animation I would've actually gave it a chance
@@LovesArt23 you freaking master artist look at these amazing skills
@@tazm2480 Are you serious? Or are you saying that just because everyone is saying the show is bad?
@@hinamatsuro1908 Im serious about loving this redesign and im serious about wishing the show had better writing
How I would fix it:
Rosemary is a headstrong girl who doesn't think before she acts. So her character arc is basically "with great power comes great responsibility"
Sage is a someone who wants to make friends but the problem is she's too shy
Paisley is a kid who wants to be more than a blacksmith but she's always picked on because of how short she is, so she has to show everyone height doesn't matter
And Thyme is basically the self concealed anti-heroine that has to get used to being with friends and gets her stone cold heart thawed by her new friends
Yesss urban fantasy is underrated
I feel like this could’ve worked so well with rosemary and sages original costumes, like they come from a older town that still runs on old magic , and when they finally get to lindgaurd they look/feel out of place being new to a big city, with new magic, and a more modern way of life, and eventually their styles would be updated from fantasy to urban fantasy
Honestly would have been more authentic to do medieval to colonial, mostly because I hate hate HATE when shows mix in so much modern things with old times stuff
Like guys, you’re skipping over so much history
You have to go through LMNOP to get to Z
Or drop the medieval all together and make it straight up modern and have certain towns, villages keep certain traditions
Like the city could be modern, the village would be medieval or colonial and towns would be like 19 or 20th century
I really like the idea of turning parsley into a boy too because in the og she's kinda the "heart" of the team and it's not a role given to male characters a lot so it's definitely a nice change :D
Plus motherly big brothers are the best kind of characters
Most of the male characters are either unimportant or one-note jerks, and Snapdragon turns out to have gender dysphoria as if "actually Sage made them realise they weren't a boy!!"
Which, obviously if they want to write a trans storyline, fine! Go ahead! But why did they have to _reinforce gender roles_ to do it, from a "strong and independent" main character no less, then pat themselves on the back? They somehow made it offensive in BOTH directions!
They look like different individuals, they have personality, they all have a character and a story behind their design! THEY LOOK LIKE PEOPLE.
I come proposing a new name for the show (based on the characters names)...
Scarborough: Tales of the Guardians
Oh see that's so much better plus it makes more sense since there names aernt even spices there herbs lol
@@LovesArt23 Mhm! Plus their names are lyrics in the name ‘Scarborough Fair’:
“Are you going to Scarborough Fair?”
“Rosemary Sage Parsley and Thyme”
UGH I was so annoyed the creators didn’t do anything clever with that naming scheme.
@@Cheetahgirl_Studios oh yeah i heard they where referencing that songs I havent listened to it yet but yeah you like they could use the melody for the theme song would probably be way better that what they have now
@@LovesArt23 Yeah. Like a bardcore cover of the original song for the theme song.
Since the show had a weird mix of medieval/modern, I feel like it would've been more interesting if the the setting had a similar theme🤔
Like instead of a generic rpg town that looks underdeveloped, maybe they could've done something else like,, modern day streets of London ???
(With much less technology of course-)
I also think having that would show the contrast between Lyngard _(probably wrong spelling but eh..)_ and the small town of Pebble. It would've definitely made the first episode more interesting. I mean cmon, if they have old and new magic, I'm sure they could do the same with other world building aspects-
Oh and great job on the art, Thyme looks amazing 😀
Something like arcane? I mean, vi got a modern style compared with catilyn but in the context it works very well with the steampunk/cyberpunk city
I mean there is also rwby, i expected to see a rwby like World when I saw some of the designs

@@LovesArt23
I just realized something: having a dwarf pursue becoming an artificer *_really_* fits the whole Old-versus-New Magic angle the show was generally going for (which I feel is also where the Shades Dudes thing was going for, compared to the Maiden-Mother-Crone triad going on at the academy - do take note of both the get-up differences *_and_* the genders).

Right, so,
The reason people were mad and saying “It’s a cartoon, it doesn’t belong on Crunchyroll” is because the creators and platform were calling it an “anime”.
Same here! Holy crap that thought has been in my head with this show, but I couldn't express it well to my sister. It's literally this.
I think the reason that some people don’t like all girl casts, or all boy casts, is cuz it’s kinda unrealistic? Like in every friend group you always have at least one girl or at least one boy. Even if you don’t like them they’re there, or adjacent.
In irl it really depends but in shows it's more interesting to see more diversity in cast
Couldn’t be further from the truth . Our school is basically popular guy group, unpopular guy group. Then popular girl group and unpopular girl grou p , the end and no micing

As much as we don't like J.K. Rowling, at least she knew how to worldbuild and found a way for them to have medieval AND modern clothes in the same universe and time setting.

Absolutely LOVE what you did, especially with Rosemary and Sage! I think Sage is my favorite out of these redesigns, but that might be because I'm biased toward healers. c':
Also looking forward to part two!

Wait, we hate J.K. Rowling?
@@vulcandipper2939 She is transphobic and racist
to the people above me: to put it bluntly, she’s really transphobic.
THANK YOU for pointing out how anachronistic everything is. I have literally no idea what time period the setting is based on. There’s everything and every style from antiquity to medieval to Renaissance to 1800’s (steampunk???) and SO MUCH IS JUST MODERN. WHAT.
Immediately I’ve been crafting a way tighter narrative for all of the core leads:
• I kinda like the idea of Rosemary losing her mom really young (maybe her dad could go out looking for her and is presumed either lost, captured or dead) and she and Sage were basically raised like sisters from that point with Sage feeling like she’d always have to clean up after Rose’s messes but Rose seeing it as having her best friend as a safety net and wanting to use the skills as a guardian to either find her parents or, hopefully, fight the bad guys keeping them prisoner, but maybe she gets hurt or gets one of her friends hurt in a fight and is forced to approach things from a more strategic mindset and not jump in feet first and worry about everything else after.
@@icybeverage9276 ikr? Atleast the owl house gave us Raine.

It also fits DnD lore. The patron God of the Elves is a shape shifter and other races have problems telling the difference between male & female Elves
I love this
When a RUclipsr does a design better than an American “anime” company.
An unfortunate amount of female characters are written with less depth and diversity than male characters 🤷♀️
I also like the plant theming in her redesign.

looking forward to the next two redesign.
I genuinely had no idea that this was supposed to be set in medieval times- I thought it was like, modern fantasy?? that is wild 😳
These redesigns are SUCH an upgrade in terms of appeal, sensibility and characterization from the original designs! Can tell you really know your stuff!
Basil/Parsley looks like Alador Blight (the redesign)
Shhhhhhhhh 😂😂😂
Their parents really need to be redesigned. Three out of four of the main characters have parents that look like twins.
Anyway point is, in RPGs you generally have 5 (maybe 6 if you consider the face) roles:
-Tank: the meatshield.
-Support: mostly healers, can also add other stuff that helps their pals.
-Control: area attacks and effects, basically the mage.
-Hitter: BIG DAMAGE
-Skillmonkey: the guy that opens the locks, builds the bridges, and gets the people places.
So I would've done it as follows:
Tank-Rosemary's Class: Man At Arms.
(Much like the role of combat engineers got wider and wider during the early modern era)
Hitter-Thyme's Class: Ranger.
If we look at the 5 classes, not only do they depict the 5 rpg roles well but it pretty much fulfills all the non-combat roles typically done by soldiers:
-officer
-medic
-engineer
-ranger
-performer
So you can see how an adventuring party would want to have these roles.
As it stands with the 4 classes, in this "anime" we have:
-fighter
-mage that does EVERYTHING that actually matters
-fighter that also sometimes fixes stuff
-fighter, but also worried about nature, except this is never really relevant to the plot.
Just...
Heck no.
Nice redesign 👍 it had more soul into it
Now this...
This is proper character desing
Yeah, "generic" designs can work _really_ well if you can work with what you're given! Sometimes less is more.
I was looking for this comment, haha
Making Thyme non-binary is actually brilliant.
Who better to be non-binary than an elf character
Wait, what about Aster? the boy who was Rosemary's first love interest?
I think he could be better, in several things, because the series wanted him to be bad at everything!
But look what I found about his name:
Aster
- Positive Points: Communication, Organization, Discipline, Entrepreneurial and adventurous spirit and Talent
- Negative Points: Dishonesty, Arrogance, Thirst for power, Shyness and Materialism.
These are so good, I'd actually watch it if it looked like this. I'd love to see your take on slime boy, but I know you've already done a lot.

Although the variety of type of background characters, I don't remember find a short boy, well, the only guys I remember was Snap, Slime boy and that Link ripoff xd but still, always makes me happy to see more of us, pikmin guys team 😎
Or maybe is just that Parsley was my fav character and I'm proyecting myself in your lovely redesing XD tho nice reinterpretation, a lot more interesting and consistent with the world theme and so detalied but not saturated, really cute, in my way to watch the second part papu

I LOVE your Sage redesign!! Her round glasses make her look more unique and SOO CUTE!!!
This show needs more than just a redesign
Sage's re-design is so cute, i love it
Fun fact at 5:47-5:50 the two characters shown are created from the same mangaka Hiro Mashima. The one on the left is from rave master while the one on the right is from fairy tail. He likes to add Easter Eggs from his series for his fans
I honestly didn't even realize that Thyme was supposedly African-American representation lmao.
Loving these redesigns so far!
When the fanmade versions are 10x better than the original
ok I recently watched the entire show and personally I don't hate it I still want to see what happens next but I do agree that the fashion could have been so much better if they tried blending modern with medieval era.
All in all, pretty good redisigns!
Thank you so much I may have worked way to hard on this but it was fun
Idk why but looking at your Rosemary redesign just brings me joy. She looks so happy 🥺 the og designs were really generic but wow you knocked this out of the park
I think thyme was the most insufferable character of them all 😂 she's the weakest and meanest of all. And she's pissed off all the time but somehow they still want her around, I saw your redesign and it became a great character suddenly, it's still an archer elf but this one even if is the weakest of the group, seems serene and full of wisdom, they may be the strategist of the group and for who Rosemary doesn't end up dead 😂 amazing job!

Loves Art: "Artificker"
Jokes aside, these are some really good redesigns. Good job.
Your points about the appropriate clothing for said era is something I needed to hear as well. I was struggling with my 1900s inspired story: mainly the fashion of the era. Since it suppose be action-esque I want them to wear somewhat battle ready but also fashionable as there's a class system going on. I love the designs you did. You making Sage darker skinned is accurate since according to the wiki she is darker skinned. Also don't feel bad I'm a girl who also isn't a fan of an all girl cast and I like more mixture.
This is why world building matters.
If you don’t bother to establish the world or time period, you get confusing shit like this.

There's nothing wrong with not liking an all girl cast.
