Nice work! I ran my first 10k in March, after starting to run later in life. Did it in 1hr13, and since then I'm almost under 1hr. Did my first half marathon last week, at 2hr33. Was proud just to finish, though it's exciting to be setting up a bunch of times at distances I've never run before, so that I have targets to aim for to beat next time. There's a 10k I might join next month, and another half marathon in September, I'm hoping to beat my times in both events.

Great. Your first 10k time was the same as mine, but until now, 7 months and 4 10k race later, I still cant break 1 hour mark. Hoping to do it in the next race.

@@iqbal4625 thanks! I've got another 10k on Friday, though I doubt I'll be under 1 hour there. I'm only close to under 1 hour in trainings on mostly flat ground, organised races tend to mix it up more with some gradients. Keep going though, I'm sure you'll get it.

Göran, you have been an inspiration to me in the last couple years. I am an old, fat American, but I have been running for the last 12 years. I started running trails a couple years ago and just completed my first 50k trail race. I am not fast but I have been running every day for the last 500 days. This video makes me want to focus on my health and speed so that i can become a better runner overall and a more competitive ultra runner in the future. Keep up the great content!

I’m actually a decent runner, and I’ve done a 37:09 10k and a 1:23:53 half marathon not so long ago (both in April 2020). But all throughout my adult years I’ve been overweight, and sometimes very overweight/obese. In mid august 2019 I peaked at 1.76 m and 99.7 kilos, with a BMI of 32.2. In December the same year I was 71 kg after extremely intense training and diet. I’ve done that a couple of times before, but that was the last time (so far). My point is that I’ve noticed how much weight play into running times. Ever since my PR in April 2020 I’ve been running regularly every week 3-6 times, sometimes with additional training as well. However, since I haven’t been watching my diet too much, and I tend to gain weight if I don’t, I am now at 85-86 kg, 15 kg more than when I did my PR. And my GOD that is a huge difference. Which I honestly think seems really unfair sometimes, as thin people usually are thin without trying. They just don’t have the same appetite.
Either way, I’m nearing a point where I’ll probably start a new diet, this time reaching the 60’s in kilos. Maybe then I’ll be able to run a sub 35 min 10K as well.
As always, content is great on the channel!

Running on flat asphalt is very comforting and relaxing for the mind. You dont have to watch your every step as you would have to on a trail. You just set a comfortable enough pace and then just switch your mind to something comlpetely detached from running.

Congrats. For me 10k was my first racing distance when I was a young student because back then I was focusing on Judo and just joined our local short races for the fun for it, because I could run the 10k with barely any running training whatsoever. I don't recommend that but I was fit from martial arts and young so body could take some abuse. For longer distances you need to train for. And I'm still proud of my 47 min time back then, which would be probably hard to beat for me now even though I started running regularly to get back into shape which I sadly lost a bit. However I can tackle much longer distances, have less injuries and more fun while running now. Will never be at your level but I don't really have a running background and now I'm just happy to stay fit and injury free.
The local races that I joined seemed bigger than your race, with several hundreds to two thousand participants, so the fun was in that many non-athletes joined just to have fun and experience something together, people on the street were cheering you on and so on.

Awesome effort, negative split is the way! Pulling out 3 minute pace on that last km was pretty impressive - you've absolutely got sub-35!
I find that 6-8km is where it gets really tough, at 8km you're nearly home and, if you didn't go out too fast, you're going to put in your two fastest kms. I started running October '21 and have a goal of getting sub-40 towards the end of the year, I have an ultra trail (55km) and Half to do before then though. For now my best is 43:51... not too slow for a 50-something!

For me road running is about predictability, able to keep consistent paces and testing myself, building my fitness as structured running is easier.
Off road is more childlike, about having fun in the woods and countryside. Longer slower days, some snacks, trying to pace the hills so I don't have to stop and can let fly on the way back down.

These results are normal because you don't use track trainning as usual. Some orienteers in Brazil have the same problem, they are successfull in the forest, but not good at street races. My pace at street was quite good, because I had track trainning twice a week. My last 10km race, in 2005 when I compete in Jukoka Relay, I finished 32:56, some seconds behind the first women, but she was a panamerican marathon champion (Marcia Narloch). I run the 13km course of first leg in Jukola in a pace of 7min/km, the best for me in Finland.

I'm absolutely not an expert, but I don't think you should've been worried in any way about running 3:33 or 3:31 during the first kilometers.
If you're capable of running a 35min 10k at all, you should be able to compensate for those couple of seconds in the last kilometers. Trying to run a small negative split is probably the best possible way to achieve a goal when you're not sure if you're capable of it. If you run a positive split and it turns out you don't have anything left for the last kilometers, that's when you would really lose time I think.
Great job btw! I wouldn't come anywhere near 35min.

I do not race and i am more into trail and mountain running... I am impressed that you (and a lot of the racers) can increase their pace tiwards the finish line.
It sounds a bit like the average pace was too low and not an all out effort if there is this energy left? On the other hand, just impressive...
For the mental challenge, i somwtimes run a 5k allout effort on a track and i usually cant hold my pace 😅
And even a 5k on a 400m track is soo boring. But the mental challenge is good. Focusing in breathing and footwork just to forget about this biring "going around and around".
For the worst shape of your life that is an awesome time, i belive. But you were an elite runner and you probably know that a PB om 10k a couple of yeara ago would have given yku another time... ;-)
