I also only knew the association to Poseidon or Neptune (same god, like so many of the Greek gods also received Latin versions.). The idea that it might also be seen as a diving falcon is also nice. It's a really simple and striking symbol. And now the whole free world knows it symbolizes Ukraine and it's heroic fight for freedom and independence! I love that the Moskva was sunk with two Ukranian Neptune naval missiles! Sweden sent our best naval missiles in the beginning of the full scale invasion, when Odesa was really at risk. But it feels much better that genuine Ukraine missiles sunk the Moskva! The Russian fleet needs to go away. Preferrably sunk! It's the fleet of an evil imperialistic country. P.S. When I was a kid, I thought it was fun to try and write Swedish words with cyrillic letters. My father told me about some letters actually sounding diffrent, so it became a little extra tricky.😅But children like such games. @@AnnafromUkraineThe trident was the symbol of Neptune’s wrath. He used it to shake the land of cities by the seas that offended him. That’s why it was used in pre-Christian Ukraine. The people of Constantinople would immediately recognize what it meant. It was the symbol of destruction coming from the sea to them. It is the same reason the submarine-launched nuclear missiles are the Trident and Trident II missiles. If Putin is stupid enough to use a nuclear weapon, it will be a Trident II that wipes Moscow off the map permanently. It is strangely fitting that a Trident will be the end of Moscow if Russia decides to use nuclear weapons, isn’t it?

I could understand how people might see a resemblance to a trident symbol derived from the ancient fishing spear, but looking at the way tryzub is drawn, and the way it appears on old relics, it does look more like the wings and tail of a diving bird, and the oval shape pointing down at the bottom looks like the body and beak of such a bird. I could see how a medieval king could wish to compare himself to a diving falcon as a warning to potential enemies that he was a dangerous person to offend.

I was told by several when living in Ukraine for two years in 1993-1994, that the trident encompasses within its shape the slavic word воля meaning "will", or "willpower", along with something close to the English concept of "freedom". Even if only partly true, it seems a very fitting symbol for Ukraine's struggle for its own sovereignty against the Russian Empire, which should have already comprehended its demise. I think the simple answer is usually true. In ancient times the Black Sea was abundant with fish and trade, so a trident seems obvious. Some ancient ruler took it as the symbol and the dynasty lasted long enough for it to stick. Since the trident can also be a weapon, it also projects strength. It may go all the way back to the ancient Greeks since they had settlements around Odessa for centuries.

Brilliant history lesson. I'm from the UK, and I have one tshirt with the trident, and another with the union jack and Ukrainian flag mixed into one flag. I support Ukraine from the very bottom of my heart.
I have always wondered about the version of the trident used by Ukraine. It looks like a stylized bird. Looking into the history of the place, I find that in struggles in the 17th century, the Hawk was the symbol of the zaporozhian Cossacks. More than one Ukrainian song I have read in translation, talks about the ‘hawk’ in a way that seems to mean an untamed Cossack. If there is a connection here, can you give us any detail?
These were displayed in my Ukrainian class in Junior High School, and were on the cover of my textbook. Ukrainians in Canada proudly displayed the flag and trident crest all through the Soviet Dark Ages. We still do, and we are even more proud of them now!
The trident was originally a fishing spear and is often seen with sea Gods like Poseidon. It also doubled as a land weapon as did many farming tools like pitch forks which were often three pronged, scythes, hammers and sickles.
Thanks for sharing your history. Very old indeed, I think showing the nautical authority background. The courtesy flag continues to be held high in unity. 🇺🇸 🇺🇦 Slava Ukraini
Thank you for the history of the Ukranian Trident. Now I can explain it when I wear my sweatshirt with the trident on it. I wear it with pride. I also have a garden flag with the trident with Glory to Ukraine.
Here's a proposal you may not have heard... Your Tryzub resembles a medieval Wolf Trap, especially the modern symbol. Often they were tall boards stuck into the ground with two deep V cuts at the top. Meat was stuck on the central higher spike. The wolf jumps up and catches his big front feet in the Vees, then hangs there until the hunter comes to collect him. The openings at the V bottoms simply help to hold his feet in. Years ago I bought a book with a medieval wolf trap illustration in it from a period woodcut that was printed. I saw the resemblance immediately. The Tryzub's higher central spike, the constricting wings and the places for his paws to lock in at the bottom. Very neat symbol. I never have seen such illustrations or excellent explanation as yours and I looked it up on our English language internet. Publish to Wikipedia!
I’ve been trying to find the meaning of the trident since I first laid eyes on it. Thanks Anna, love from New Hampshire oblast, Patricia 👵🏻 🥰 Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦
Thank you, Anna, for sharing this history of the Ukrainian national emblem with us. When I hear trident, I think of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. But Ukraine's тризуб (tryzub) is more complex, more elaborate than Poseidon's trident, so I believe it must have a different meaning. Ukraine's tryzub does resemble a diving falcon, and of course the falcon is a symbol of strength in many cultures. In the U.S., we even named one of our fighter jets accordingly: the F-16 Fighting Falcon. (Which the Armed Forces of Ukraine will put to good use soon.) I wonder if Ukraine's tryzub is actually a combination of the seafaring trident and the falcon, representing the power of the sea combined with the power of the land. That seems very fitting for Ukraine. I can imagine an ancient ruler of the region wanting a symbol that represents that combination of strengths.
My trident tattoo will come. I have contact with a tattoo artist in Kyiv, and when the moment comes I can come, I will be there to have it set (just like the Cossack I have on my right arm, I want to have it set in Ukraine). There is 1 open square left on my left arm (which carries images that tell stories, hopes and dreams of my life). Since 2013 Ukraine has become a part as well. Couldn't find a better spot.
Thank you Anna for a wonderful documentary on Ukraine's unique history and the number of times that outsiders have tried to deny Ukraine's heritage and acknowledge that they have a distinct heritage. The closest I've come is to the Trident that was used by the Poseidon who was one of the Gods in the Greek Pantheon. It never ceases to amaze me how much trade there was in what we call the Dark Ages and what archeology has taught us about history. If Swedish Vikings settled the area they would have traveled quite a bit. As there is a great deal of viking mythology perhaps as they traveled the world and traded with others they absorbed various symbols and other mythology and when one group settled Keivan Rus (rus means man who rows) the leader used a combination of symbols to create the Trident. I can see why a Viking might settle in the wilderness of Ukraine. Great soil to grow crops. Rivers that held plentiful variety of fish and animals suitable hunting for food and rivers for fishing and transport and one river that led to one sea and another sea on the east. A land of embarrassing riches. I've seen artifacts made of gold so they may have mined gold or had goods fine enough to trade for gold at one time. Ukraine's history is fascinating and I hope that the art and artifacts that were unearthed and recently stolen by Putin in his efforts to prove that Ukraine's history is not older or separate from Russia's or that Russia is an offspring of Keivan Rus, which is more likely, are returned undamaged to Ukraine so that all of us who plan to travel to Ukraine in the future can see these beautiful artifacts in person.
Thank you for explaining the history of the Trident. I love several of the T-Shirts in the new collection, especially the black ones. We'll soon get some. Have a nice new week!!
Anna, glad that i found your channel , i am a Greek born , but leave in USA, love the history of Ukraine, and the connection of my birth country with yours going way back . even till this terrible war started there was a big greek minority in Mariupol . keep going strong !! and Glory to UKRAINE !! I know you will win !! All the best !
My initial impression of the tryzub was that this was stylized rendition (Celtic-like to my eyes) of the Holy Ghost/Spirit representing the spirit of Pentecost, and that the trident aspect itself represented the Blessed Trinity. Combined with the image of a diving falcon, it seems to be to be a powerful merging of the religious with the national secular. The power of this icon cannot be ignored! It is on the Ukrainian flag that I display at home, superimposed on the traditional bi-color flag! Слава Україні! 🇺🇦
Far older is the steppe peoples' recognition of the eagle as the animal who flies highest, fathest-seeing, who is the intermediary who visits both the Great Sky, and taught a woman to speak the language of the animals, which humans had forgotten. The tale is ancient, and more complex than i here relate, though, as you see, informs us that we had forgotten our relationship with all other life. You might find more allegorical truth by extending beyond narrow and mistaken solipsistic myth. Pantheists at least recognized that their pantheons represented both human mental traits and limitations, as well as physical forces. Manichaean delusion is entirely overly simplistic, as what is "good" - you may subtract one o if you like and still remain accurate - for one individual living organism may not be the same for another.
Good video. Stay strong. Got a trident sticker on my back window in souport of Ukraine. It is also a reminder that world leaders should never trust Russia and its lieing leaders. Stay strong, Ukraine.
I heard a story recently, which may be true. Dad tells son, ‘Remember, you must not lie’. Son asks ‘Isn’t there any time I can lie?” Dad answers ‘ Well, yes. You can lie if you speak in Russian.’ Son says ‘But Dad, I don’t speak Russian’. Dad replies ‘I know.’
In the Ukrainian alphabet, the "V" Volodymyr Velykyj is a "B." One "B" forward facing and one in reverse, along with a center cross, form the Trident. Volodymyr Velykyj baptized Rus "original name of Ukraine" as a Christian country in the year 988, 150 year before Moscow was even a swamp hut.
3 has always been a very important number in many religions. Working together makes us strong. We will win this ancient war with Ukraine as the tip of the Tryzub 🔱

We have a trident in common, our beautiful female warrior Britannia holds a trident spear and shield.
Thank you again for educating us my dear, take care and stay strong! You got this, we're with you. 🇺🇦🇬🇧❤🤫😘
Excellent presentation! Concise but extremely informative. Thank you
I always assumed Trident was for spear fishing. And, it does look very cool in your stylized version.
I have ordered 2 Tee shirts and when they arrive I will wear them with pride and show my support for The Ukraine. xx
Brilliant history lesson. I'm from the UK, and I have one tshirt with the trident, and another with the union jack and Ukrainian flag mixed into one flag. I support Ukraine from the very bottom of my heart.
I have the Trident Ukrainian flag flying now
Even there is statue of Britannia in Plymouth where Britannia is holding trident spear.
@@RichardLionheart12 on the Brunel Bridge?
My research of the symbol have lead me to a kings crown with center being a jewel.
I think the Greek/Roman god used tridents too - Poseidon the god of the sea!
Very interesting thank you
Yes, you are right
I have always wondered about the version of the trident used by Ukraine.
@@AnnafromUkraine yes it strikes a very maritime chord ,here on the banks of the river mersey 😊😊
These were displayed in my Ukrainian class in Junior High School, and were on the cover of my textbook. Ukrainians in Canada proudly displayed the flag and trident crest all through the Soviet Dark Ages. We still do, and we are even more proud of them now!
This is really a good thing you do here. The trident is a symbol directly destroying the stories of the hobby historian in the Kremlin.
“The hobby historian in the Kremlin” - I like this description, I’m going to steal it… 😉
I have heard the trident topped the royal staff of St Vladimir of Kyev
The Irish Heritage Trust on RUclips have a video Sharing Ukrainian and Irish Cultural Heritage.
May Ukraine be free from war and its people thrive. 😊
Thank you Anna. Groet, Arjan
Hi Anna! Thanks Much !.......
Slava Ukraini
I like it because of the history and also it is simple and elegant..Stylish and to the point..
So do I
Very interesting, thank you.
Thank you for your great and interesting report Anna! 🫶🏻💖🇺🇦💙💛🇺🇦💖🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
(Which the Armed Forces of Ukraine will put to good use soon.)
I wonder if Ukraine's tryzub is actually a combination of the seafaring trident and the falcon, representing the power of the sea combined with the power of the land. That seems very fitting for Ukraine. I can imagine an ancient ruler of the region wanting a symbol that represents that combination of strengths.
A very beautiful Vlog and it seems to come straight from your heart.
@Anna from Ukraine King Rus had similar looking symbol, but also later in Christian times reflects descending holy spirt protecting Ukraine.
Slava Ukraine from Oshawa, Canada. All Ukrainians are proud of their history
Manichaean delusion is entirely overly simplistic, as what is "good"
- you may subtract one o if you like and still remain accurate - for one individual living organism may not be the same for another.
Hello Anna and world. Black panther on a white background for Slovenija! Have a beautiful day. Bye. Rudi.
The trident its pretty cool ngl
Thank you Anna and Sasha very interesting video
...thank you for explaining the trident...it is an intriguing symbol, which I had never seen before the Russian invasion...Slava Ukraini....
Very interesting history enjoyed this 👌
Awesome Anna. Thx so much. I wondered this the other day, since I was concidering Trident as a watermark in a frame.
I love the Tryzyub I have a lot of Ukrainian flags and one of them has the trident of Ukraine. Ukraine is a beautiful country and I love it very much.
Greetings from Los Angeles, California, USA, Anna!!
I like this channel, and I come back to ear Anna about Ukraine.

@@AnnafromUkraine I will have a think 🤔 😉
3 has always been a very important number in many religions. Working together makes us strong. We will win this ancient war with Ukraine as the tip of the Tryzub 🔱
True.
Thank you. I asked that question a while back and here it is. Very interresting. I had a feeling it was a very old and historic symbol.
May your counter offensive be very very successful. Slava Ukraini.
