As a trumpeter myself, I first heard of the great Rafael in high school. I was riding in a bus with the band and someone (a fellow trumpet player, of course), was playing a cassette of some of his recordings on the bus. I was blown away. His sound and his technique were truly a revelation and an inspiration to me. I think of all the albums I've heard by him over the years, it seems to me he was in his finest form ever on the Mendez/Almeida album, of which all the songs can be found here on RUclips. It's just him on trumpet and the great Laurindo Almeida on guitar. As a matter of fact, this piece is on that album. It's a gem of an album.
