That JT Miller contract aged very well. Not long ago everyone was complaining what a terrible contract that is. But 8 million for 100 points is a pretty good deal. The Hughes contract is a huge bargain for what he bring. Petterson may be slightly overpaid but those 2 bargains balance it out.
Lots of people are making the comparison between now and 2020, where the team made it to Game 7 of Round 2, only for a bunch of players to leave and the team regressed hard. Fear is understandable. But there is one big key difference between this year and 2020: management. I trust Rutherford, Allvin, and the rest of the staff, which is something I never did during Jim Benning's reign of terror.

After the deal that Team Rutherford did with Hronek, I feel pretty confident with them being allowed to keep on keeping on doing what they're doing. Garland was probably the most consistently performing Canuck last season and I don't think you can find a single game where he didn't put in an honest effort.
Hanging on to players and overpaying them has been a problem for Canucks management for a long long time. I am happy to see that the current group are smart about free agency.
As much as I want to see the Canucks keep Zadorov, Lindholm and Joshua I just don't see it happening with how much they're asking. It'll be a very interesting offseason.
It was different than 4 years ago. We lost key players (top 4 D and top 6 forward) because of bad contracts that Benning sign in past seasons. Tanev and Toffoli went on and signed bargain contracts due to the covid flat cap elsewhere. This management group has a plan in place and they have the right people in the right place operate as a team. Benning was only working with Weisbrod and they were all over the place. It is a breath of fresh air.
I just hope they keep Joshua and Zadorov. I can deal with everyone else but u really like those two and i would love for them to suit up in the blue green and white come October

In the first half, when he was healthy, Hronek was on a 60-70 point pace, which would make a 7.25 salary a steal. Chances are, given he is 26, that he will approach these numbers many more times, and since the cap is growing every year, it will make this contract look like a steal in 2 or 3 years. with any luck, they'll be able to sign Big Z, but he is almost 30, so chances are he is at his peak value, so I can understand why Allvin might be reticent to give him too long of a term. A 3 or 4 year deal, around 5m, should be the max.
To be honest I Understand the cap will continue to rise but I wanted to echo the sentiments at the beginning how some of these GM's are going to sign contracts they regret and it feels as though smart teams mix smarter signings in with trades vs teams that just go all out in Free Agency and come to regret it later unless it's a high end player
The Athletic had an article about the Top 50 UFAs this summer and the top comment was, 'The article could be renamed the top 50 worst contracts' next summer. There are going to be a LOT of bad contracts handed out in July and I just want the Canucks to avoid making any major mistakes.

EP 40 should have taken less . Max 10 . Miller's better and he took 8 . % of the Cap a player consumes is very important . If they added 4 new teams . Then you could afford players that take up 10 % + of your cap .
I really hope they find a way to keep Joshua and Bleuger. Dakota Joshua especially has unreal chemistry with Garland, and if Lindholm is moving on, then I hope the Canucks can keep Bleuger who was a very effective centre for that third line that honestly performed better than Van’s second line for a significant chunk of the year. And I’m okay with signing Hronek and moving on from Big Z bc even tho Zadorov is the one who had the great playoff performance, not Hronek, I think Hronek has more upside. The other thing that makes me 100% okay with moving on from Zadorov if that’s the kind of money he’s asking for, is that Vancouver has suffered for having that 6 mil Myers contract for too many years. The team is finally out from under it so I really don’t want the team to turn around and immediately offer the exact same-or worse!-contract to the other 6’7 player on the team who, yes, had one very solid year but will likely not have 5+ seasons of equal-or-better performance. I like Zadorov more than the Chaos Giraffe, but the Giraffe is willing to take less, and Tocchet seems to put a lot of trust in him so 🤷 Sign Silovs, it seems like he’s ready, I’d like to have a reliable goalie like Desmith who can take some of the load off of Demko and still get us points, but I don’t think Vancouver has the cap space to do a three goalie rotation. Maybe pro-scouting can find a guy who can’t handle much of a load (like 10-12 games is all he can do) but can give you a solid effort in goal that might not steal you games, but can hold down the fort well enough if the team gives him goal-support. I just don’t want Demko being put in for more than half the games and he better not be the starter for 50+. Not with his injury history now. I know he probably wants to play the maximum number games he can, but I think the team has to do some game management for Demko, if they want our star goalie to be moderately healthy in the playoffs.

I am interested to see what the Red Wings pay to sign RFA's Lucas Raymond and Mo Seider. Stevie Y likes to get these contracts done right away. They might set the pattern for signing RFA's around the league.
Right now Hoglander is a third liner, not a second. Unless you find a much better and more physical linemate than Michaev. .Zadorov played really good and his physical play got us wins. I doubt we can replace him.. And our forward group was not as strong as it should be.We did super good up to about two and a half weeks before the All Star Game.. A few teams took liberties on our guys.. Either get hurt or not strong enough to slow players from nailing our defence.. Even as good as we were we did not fare well at big boy hockey. We sort of played that game but when bigger more physical teams came to town or visa versa they out muscled us. I did not think Philly a better team but they had our number..Maybe two bigger forwards.. In a way can alieviate the loss of Big Z. Maybe. Edmonton has those young guys and they have size and speed.. We can easily be in the mushy middle again. , but maybe Rutherford and company know what they are doing over me a arm chair GM. What they have done really has been impressive.. This team was not doing well all round.
Even if we were able to keep Lindholm at $7.5mil/season, if we re-sign him for 8yrs, are we getting the playoffs Lindholm or are we getting the regular season Lindholm where he's stuck on the 3rd line. With Big Z, he's a solid number 4 dman, but the downside is that if you play him too high in the lineup, he's prone to mental lapses...

They need a few middle six Forwards who can score and don’t cost more than 4M and 2nd/3rd line 2way D again max 4M so the depth is reinforced… don’t think they need another big contract… unless they trade some money out… 🤷🏻♂️

The disrespect to Hughes, Hronek just got signed for the same deal and he's making the same amount as him and producing half has much points. Crazy. Also the Canucks have enough for both Zadorov and Myers also. You need big Defensemen in your line up or you will get bullied again like a few years ago before you got Myers and Zadorov.
Hughes makes more than that. His cap hut is 7.85 million and his contract ends in three years. He will get a huge raise then. Zadorov wants 5.5 million a year on a long term deal.

I haven't seen anything about Zadorov giving the Canucks any sort of discount. The reporting right now makes it sound like they will make a last ditch effort this weekend to sign him and then he goes to market if that fails. I like Zadorov, but he played the best hockey of his career after joining the Canucks and a big money, long term deal could backfire in year one.
Vancouver should pick up some young kids, save money and go through a rebuild of depth on the blue line . They'll drop out of the post season likely, but the rebuild is still going for a few more years 😊

If you really value a player you will find a way to re-sign them. That's why, to quote some random hockey guy "big stars rarely get moved", teams find a way. I look at the value of Joshua and Zadorov, already having them on your team, and knowing exactly what they bring to the table, which is what the Canucks have been lacking for a while, I hope they somehow find a way get it done with those 2 at least. But I have trust in Rutherford and Allvin to do what's best for the team.

It's been a while, but as i remember it mason raymond was great at pk and even better in 3vs3.

The disrespect to Hughes, Hronek just got signed for the same deal and he's making the same amount as him and producing half has much points. Crazy. Also the Canucks have enough for both Zadorov and Myers also. You need big Defensemen in your line up or you will get bullied again like a few years ago before you got Myers and Zadorov.
Hughes makes more than that. His cap hut is 7.85 million and his contract ends in three years. He will get a huge raise then. Zadorov wants 5.5 million a year on a long term deal.

I haven't seen anything about Zadorov giving the Canucks any sort of discount. The reporting right now makes it sound like they will make a last ditch effort this weekend to sign him and then he goes to market if that fails. I like Zadorov, but he played the best hockey of his career after joining the Canucks and a big money, long term deal could backfire in year one.
Vancouver should pick up some young kids, save money and go through a rebuild of depth on the blue line . They'll drop out of the post season likely, but the rebuild is still going for a few more years 😊

@@TheHockeyGuy The reason that the free agents that will hit the market are on the market is because their teams didn't value them as much as other teams will. If you really value a player you will find a way to re-sign them. That's why, to quote some random hockey guy "big stars rarely get moved", teams find a way. I look at the value of Joshua and Zadorov, already having them on your team, and knowing exactly what they bring to the table, which is what the Canucks have been lacking for a while, I hope they somehow find a way get it done with those 2 at least. But I have trust in Rutherford and Allvin to do what's best for the team.
