New sub here. You stand upon the precipice of either falling in love with BandMaid or getting distracted and thinking they are just another band. They're not. They are arguably the greatest proper rock and roll band of the 21st century. Hyperbole is very difficult to avoid with BandMaid so screw it. I envy you so much. There is so much wonderful music,, tears and laughter ahead of you if you keep listening.
There's no way to describe here why all the things they do combine to create the music. Tons of riffs - enough to make an album for most bands in one song. More hooks than grandad's tackle box. Genre bending writing and performances. In damn near every song a sing along bit for the fans to keep us engaged. Word play between English and Japanese homophones is not uncommon. Deep collaboration between all members to allow everyone to shine. What they have done is harness their egos in service to the song. Akane Hirose and MISA are IMHO the greatest rhythm section currently active in rock music. Truly inventive bass and drumming - not over played but always interesting with unusual choices that make the songs rich. They're not just keeping a beat EVER! Magnificent composition and stellar guitar work from Kanami Tono and equally magnificent vocals from Saiki Atsumi grab us by the ears. Then There's Miku Kobato- no Miku no BandMaid. Founder, chief lyricist, vocal harmonies sung while playing rhythm guitar she is the backbone of this group. She's the lead singer who fired herself so that the lead singer would have a more rock and roll voice. She's the singer who learned to play guitar while in the band. A paid professional learning her instrument on the fly. Now she has her own signature model of Zematis electric guitar. She willed BandMaid into existence.
I haven't even begun to say all I could. Come and see for yourself!

I've been a Maidiac for around four years. If you do the deep dive, you will discover the depth and diversity of their huge catalog that spans pop, punk, prog, fusion, metal, rap, folk-metal, but mainly classic rock. You'll receive many pleasant surprises along the way. Watch their live videos whenever possible: "Puzzle", "Moratorium", "Rinne", "Matchless GUM", "From Now On", "Giovanni", "Daydreaming", "Play", "Freedom", "Domination" - this barely scratches the surface.
The way Kanami Töno plays in that "I don't care what I look like" manner, her hair is often a mess by 'break time' and the other band members are often seen 'fixing' her hair while another band member is doing an MC with the audience. This band really does put a feminine spin on their brand of rock, in their performance and their lyrics.
Band-Maid has had a long and often difficult journey, barely surviving their first year, losing a record contract and their management company having decided to disband them before their video for "Thrill" went viral internationally.
"Thrill" was the song and music video that saved the band. It's also the pivotal moment where they realized that their managers cared more about their bottom line than Band-Maid's well being, and that they needed to take greater control over their careers.
Your comment that the energy seemed to be lacking from this performance of "Thrill" is well founded. Band-Maid had been working on this concert set list for their debut at Budokan, but that gig was cancelled because of the lockdown extension. They had worked hard for that Budokan gig, a stretch goal they had hardly thought within their reach, so when it was cancelled they rented a venue that regularly did live TV, and they streamed the concert with NO AUDIENCE, just the TV crew. There are moments during this concert where the lack of audience is sadly noticeable. At mid concert, vocalist Saiki introduces the song "About Us" that was written to thank and encourage their fans who were supporting them during the lockdown. They had meant to introduce it at Budokan. Get your box of tissues handy: it was a great performance, despite the lack of audience. You will be moved.

Welcome, Jorvik. You are embarking on (along with many others - over 210 million views just on their official YT channel, plus over 40 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (144 songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 80 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: ruclips.net/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/видео.html Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Hate?, Shambles, Influencer, Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, You, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, The One, Bestie, About Us, Memorable, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like From Now On, Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits (AniMaid) like Protect You, Sense, Different, Glory and Unleash!!!!! (from their own Anime MV (series?)): ruclips.net/video/7LB_EPS48HE/видео.html)
And many songs are represented with over 50 well produced music videos. ruclips.net/user/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYUJI concerts:
 2023 Yokohama 10th Year Anniversary Concert “Endless Story” ruclips.net/video/Za1y-RRVd70/видео.html
     ONLINE OKYU-JI (Feb. 11, 2021) “No God” ruclips.net/video/nAdWnIRjGak/видео.html
     Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA (February 14, 2020) “Domination” ruclips.net/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/видео.html
     ZEPP 2018 “Real Existence” ruclips.net/video/-qQnKILR5u0/видео.html
 Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and other full concerts are on bandmaidprime.tokyo, bili, and official Band-Maid’s DVD/BD/CD.
And some of the better quality fan videos are excellent.
 Shot by Pat McKee from their 2023 US tour concert in Detroit: ruclips.net/video/DgxU-MVjta0/видео.html
     See the Maids 2023 Rockville Festival’s short-set perfection performance: ruclips.net/video/vjZkNeoGmhc/видео.html
 Great photo collage with older classic songs from P in D: www.youtube.com/@PinD-PANIC
If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, live streams, CD, DVD/BD & merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Don’t Let Me Down, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.

    Band-Maid Members:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “StarQueen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 30 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 33 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 33 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 33 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 32 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.
    [BAND-MAID NEWS]
 BAND-MAID PRIME - Special Video Distribution Website. Along with nearly 50 great play-through’s by each member, concerts and skits, Band-Maid management / label(s) have included the Acoustic Christmas 2021, ZEPP 2018 and Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 concerts! Fans can now see more than 50 great live performances with awesome audio, etc. like Fate, I Can't Live Without You and the great MISA / Kanami exchange in Don't You Tell Me. Those concerts are two of the best produced & performed concerts ever recorded, IMO. bandmaidprime.tokyo

Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. While they don't class themselves as a metal band, they don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog mayhem to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They can make you headbang, they can make you pogo, they can make you cry like a baby. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and world class musicians to boot. They are currently into their 12th year with the original line up. And they are the best live band I have ever witnessed!
Btw, Miku the rhythm guitarist (red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in Japanese maid cafe's. Her idea is a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see (cute maids) is NOT what you get (Hard Rock/Punk/Metal). They take the maid café concept literally. They call their concerts "servings" and their fans "Masters and Princesses". Oh, and Miku is an 810 year old small pigeon. Welcome to the pigeon hole Po!

This live version of Thrill was recorded on stage without an audience during the pandemic, and you are right they are not as energetic and I believe part of that is they had no audience. The MV of this is so good and is the song that started their careers basically with a big worldwide fanbase.

Hi Jorvik! Although there is a language barrier, you’ll notice that there are some English in the lyrics. Sometimes it’s there because the lyricist thought it would make the phrasing work better rather than the native language. Btw, the rhythm guitarist is the current main lyricist. HATE?, however, the lyrics were written by the lead vocalist herself. The main composer is the lead guitarist. Thrill is one of their earlier hits where an outside source was used for lyrics and music.

"Their energy seems unmatched." You got that right! Fun reaction, and excellent analysis, subbed, based on you saying you want to do a deep dive on the Maids. Brace yourself, the pigeon hole is astonishingly deep! But you're going to love the ride.
The choke-hold they have on American men is mostly older guys like me... because they're like the best sounds of the 70s, 80s and 90s (not just that, but that's the sound I love)... only better.

    • @mikeholmes5308
      @mikeholmes5308 12 дней назад

Oh, in case somebody below didn't mention it, the Thrill live video is from the Covid period, so it's an online "Okyuji" (serving, which is what they call their shows). So there's no audience, which is why the energy level is lower here. They love having a real audience, and feed off the energy level amazingly. Even in small venues, or maybe even especially in small venues, the energy reverberating around is crazy. Saw them live at the House of Blues in Chicago, their last show in 2022, and they tore the roof off the place.
We're all hoping they return to North America (they have a considerable following in Mexico, too) in 2025. Waiting for an announcement as their current Japan tour wraps up later this month.

Ah! Those that recommended Thrill probably meant the MV, and not the live one. BAND-MAID is fantastic live and generally the recommendation is to go live, but for Thrill it is the MV that is recommended, it is iconic. First, it is cute and very good. But also, that is THE MV that saved BAND-MAID from termination. It was not going well for BAND-MAID and their record company had decided to cut it. And then this MV went viral. Millions of hits in just days. And the record company did reconsider. And here we are, one of the best hard rock groups ever.

I would recommend that you take the time (don't need to do a review) and watch the seven part biographical series by Ohrenje. Each of the seven parts covers the five band members individually, Miku wraps up the series, but let's just say it took 3 parts to cover her. There is a history about the band, certain lingo madiacs use, the "gap" that Miku promoted, Maid Cafe culture..... It is a deep pigeon hole (yeah, you will even find out why madiacs end their sentences with the Japanese abbreviated pigeon onomatopoeia, "Po!"). Blazing instrumentals that Eddie Van Halen would be challenged to keep up with, to quiet acoustic performances that have brought some middle-aged men to tears during their review.

    Thank you for your reaction!
"Hate?" is the perfect song to embark on the Band-Maid reaction highway. The main difference between these two songs is the fact that "Thrill", from their second album, is not their own composition. Kanami Tono, the lead guitarist, has composed most of their music since 2017 and she focuses on trying to bring the best out every member of the band, even getting them to cross new boundaries in their performances. Check out the song "Black Hole", where Kanami challenged the drummer Akane to reach new heights regarding fast tempo.

JorvikV , Welcome to BAND-MAID enjoy your journey down the Pigeon hole , MISA !!! MISA !!! MISA !!! the Barefoot Bass Assassin , now that you watched the laid back version of Thrill you need to see the Original MV from 2014 BAND-MAID`s 1st MV which saved the band from being dropped by there label , the Thrill you just saw was from an on line concert during covid , no audience just film crew n staff , I saw BAND-MAID twice , once in 2022 in Seattle Wa and once in 2023 in Spokane Wa , one of my favorite songs is , Turn me on .

Enjoyed your reaction! Does every song have a bass solo and guitar solo? No, it just depends on the song and the style of music they’re playing. There are more guitar solos than bass solos, but MISA gets more solos than your average bass player.

Thank you for your reaction. I don’t really have a favorit song by Band Maid but my number 1# is Manners as the MV was my introduction that sent me on my musical journey with this band. If you want different music from Japan I suggest Kenshi Yunezu with the MVs Lemon or Loser, King Gnu with Hakujistu and Majiko with Princes. Have fun! :)

Yes, Band-Maid is about as organic as a band can get, especially in this age of corporate-created singers and bands. It started with a woman and the idea of creating a hard rock band with a maid aesthetic. Mike promoted the idea and got the backing from an entertainment management company. Her search for band members started when she found Kanami Tono, a guitarist and songwriter. Kanami recommended Akane Hirose, a drummer she had worked with, who knew Misa, a bassist. Soon after working together, Miku decided they needed a stronger vocalist, held auditions, and selected Saki Atsumi as lead vocalis. At this time, Miku, a seasoned vocalist from Lil Cumin idol group, decided to learn to play the guitar. Kanami taught Miku to play and became the rhythm guitarist. Until Miku became proficient, Kanami recorded the rhythm parts for their audio recordings. From the earliest videos I have seen, Kanami could play without looking at the guitar. I have seen a video of Band-Maid playing at several small festivals in Japan where Kanami would stare up or close her eyes for significant periods while playing. FYI: a reactor, Ryan Mear, designed a tee shirt with an image of Kanami with her head back starring up that says,” Shut up while Kansmi is speaking.” By the way, Kanami started playing the piano at 3. She wanted to be cool in high school and taught herself to play the guitar, although she had a few friends who helped her. After high school, Kanami wanted to attend music school, but her parents would not let her. She went to university and got a Bachelor's in Economics.

Band-Maid are THE best Hard Rock band on Earth. Try Lovebites (female, Japanese, incredible musicianship) for THE best Metal band on Earth. Also Nemophila and Hanabie (female, Ja...you get the picture) for THE best Metal/Punk/vocal fry on Earth.

misa {bass} and kanami {lead guitar} are two of THE best musicians japan has to offer - both off the charts. add akane on drums - another prodigy - and miku on rhythm guitar and backup vocals and finally the commanding stage presence of vocalist saiki and you have one of the best bands on the planet. 11 years in with NO sign of slowing down ! and this is the tip of the iceberg - for over 15 years now the japanese female rock and metal invasion has been in full swing with a ton of amazing groups. welcome aboard - you have much to discover. recommended japanese all girl bands for future reactions - LOVEBITES , NEMOPHILA , HAGANE , HANABIE , EAST OF EDEN , PARADOXX , PALENEO. ALL epic bands

Nice reaction. Thank you. I'm a fan since early Dec. 2021 when I first discovered them when YT threw up 2 videos in my sidebar "Choose Me" and "Play" both live. They are a journey well worth taking.

Wild order to see Band Maid for first time, their 10 year Anniversary Show and then to a live version of the song that brought them on the scene in the West. Welcome to the Pigeon Hole. It goes very deep and it is a wonderful journey. Enjoy!
As for the English in Japanese songs, I have lived in Japan since 1986 and listened to J-Pop, J-Rock and even some J-Metal over all of those years. Japanese have included English words / phrases in their music as long as I have listened. Not sure when it started, but it has been very common for a long time.

Regarding female Japanese rock and metal music there is lots to choose from. My personal favorites are
    * BAND-MAID - Heavy rock, punk rock, prog rock and instrumental metal. Its a goofy group of women that are very good at what they do and very charming.
    * Lovebites - Heavy and speed metal but also metal ballads and mixed with classical music. Two outstanding lead guitarists. But the rest of the band is also top notch. They are scary good. Recommended start song: "The Hammer of Wrath". Must hear song: "Soldier stand solitarily". They have so many good songs and all songs are good.
    * Nemophila (Ne-mo-phi-la) - mainly metal, but they actually do anything, often with a metal touch. A nice group of women that do both good MV and good live stuff. Extremely likable. They do go hard when they want to go hard. Recommended start song: live of "Oiran" BTW - they have made lots of covers, just because they love to play old school rock and other stuff. Its good! Very good!
    * Hanabie (ha-na-bee-eh) - metal core. Very fun group of young women. You really need to look att the MV first. They are so fun. They have the cutest mini growler on the planet. Recommended start song: MV of "We love sweets".

America does love Japanese content from Godzilla to BAND-MAID they have some of the best stuff and try "Unleash!!!!!" for an anime style video treatment of BAND-MAID.

Welcome down the pigeon hole, Princess Wyllow!
“I may have already listened to a song from them…” Not likely. They are a hard band to forget - especially when you watch them performing in their battle armor (the maid outfits.)
They have an incredible catalogue of killer songs and not a bad one in the bunch. Your favorite BAND-MAID song is probably the last one you listened to.
Generally their best videos are their live performances, and I’ll let the other Maidiacs lead you down that pigeon hole. But I’ll point out some rare music videos I prefer to the live versions:
From Now On (a blistering instrumental)
    MANNERS (bluesy)
    The Non-Fiction Days
    THRILL (their very first video)
    UNLEASH
    SHAMBLES (an Akane drumming masterclass)
    More BAND-MAID please!
