I used to love foil, but I am feeling so alienated from this sport, now. I remember how much I admired Cerioni and Numa when I was learning to fence; but now since I fence epee, I find it all a bit ridiculous. Still, it is incontestible that foilists like Golubitsky were able to fence epee (left-handed) on team competitions, and still finish #1 in the World... Che Bella!
At 2:50, while under attack Cerioni puts out his "line" with the point clearly over Numa's head and converts it to a counterattack, and expects to get the call. If you've ever watched any of the 1988 Olympics you'll see him do the same thing, as if he's expecting to get the call. I think he just expected refs to give it to him because he'd make a big fuss if they didn't.
