I'm with you, I had to buy mine back in May and nabbed a Asus tuf plus for under $160 new. I could not risk the issue that was going on with the current 3300X.
Hey, nothing wrong at all with X570. You just have to make sure to stayed away from the few models that turned out to be awful designs. But you are all set for Zen3 and have ALL PCIe4.0 connections so you will have a solid system for many years to come. No regrets!
Something I found to be a problem with cheaper, overlockable chipsets is that certain functionalities in the BIOS are lacking or not quite as well implemented. Now, that may not seem like a big deal, but since I'm very OC oriented, it really makes a difference to me if the LoadLine Calibration is configured properly or not. Same goes for the Vdroop and in general certain secondary voltages. I got myself a B350 from Asrock at the time and the VRMs were simply great. Great temps, great stability, but the overclocks I was getting simply were not quite as good as on X370, simply because of the LoadLine and of some voltages.
It's interesting that I could run my setup perfectly well on B550 board: -Graphics card + pcie-soundcard. -Two nvme drives -Eight sata-devices Though..at the moment B550 Taichi costs more than it's X570 counterpart around here..
I'm glad to see that the VRMs are so good on the B550 Taichi because that means the VRMs on the Steel Legend and Extreme4 should also be really good. They use the same components and the main difference seems to be that they have 12 Vcore phases instead of 14. The Taichi looks like a really nice board but the Steel Legend and Extreme4 for ~60% of the price are a lot closer to what I'm willing to pay, and they still have a lot of the features that I like about the Taichi (including a front USB Type-C header, an integrated I/O shield, a post code display, and even power/reset buttons on the Extreme4). No clear CMOS button or BIOS flashback though (and no Wifi/Bluetooth).
The Taichi is the Top B550 Board from ASrock so its the most expensive. These B550 are basically x570 build-like Boards just with a cheaper Chipset and no Fan.
X570 owner. I lol when people keep knocking the chipset fan as if it's cooling the Sahara Desert while sounding like a jet engine. B550 is a solid choice for most people. Feature set wise. Most people won't see the difference between the B550 and X570. X570 will give you more pro consumer features if you utilize it or not. M.2 Gen 4 speed ssd's. Even then, most could go without an X570. Just get what you can afford. Sucks that it's not as affordable as it was originally thought but that might be more of the world crisis.
he's talking about chipset lanes (PCH) 16 CPU lanes go to the the top 16x slot, 4 CPU lanes go to the chipset which are then divided into the 4 3.0 lans and 8 2.0 lanes. I think there is also another 4 lanes on the cpu dedicated for an M.2 slot. So in total it is 24 PICE gen 4 from the cpu. 4 of them are reserved for the chipset and the rest can be used
@@Sheepxpy3 B550 has PCIe 3.0 lanes, not 2.0. 8+2 lanes out from chipset. Those 2 extras can be configured as sata ports. Typically B550 motherboards use 4 lanes for M.2, 4 lanes for bottom x16 slot and have 4+2 sata ports.
@@mohdfaizal6773 AMD is the most relevant company in the space right now as soon as they release a good budget video card like a current Vega card on rdna2 for 99 to 129 they will make more money than they know what to do with I can confirm that the 3300x is selling really fast and with b550 those CPUs will become scarce.
If I was to buy a PCIE Gen 4 2tb drive... Would it be more convenient to use that as a Game drive, get all those games coming in at full speed (and any technologies that can use such speed in the future) than as a OS drive? This way all your games are boosted and you can sit back with a Gen 3 NVMe drive as a OS drive
Awesome Vid! Love the thoroughness. Hopefully more b550 motherboards can be tested/reviewed like so. This is Priceless pre-purchase information. Ps. Huge thanks also for mentioning prices in AUD currency and not Just USD like some other channel does.
Now that's what I call a motherboard review! I had my heart set on an MSI B550m Mortar rather than the Tomahawk (I don't have the room for a full ATX) but according to one of the first reviews out there by PC Gamer when stressed out with an 3950X: "We did witness alarming power draw on this board though, and performance during testing was erratic, to say the least. Cinebench performance dropped considerably towards the end of the initial sweep of testing" Would be nice to know if this was a one-off with their sample as I've now got doubts.
Appreciate your review of this board. I think that B550 is a good chipset. It's kind of ironic that as pricing is just approaching what is standard for Intel chipsets we are kind of balking at the "higher prices" but I think for the features you get this chipset provides a very nice value proposition.
Bryan with all honesty in your eyes, is it worth the upgrade from a B350 with R5 3500X to a B550 with a 3600XT, the ram is a G.Skill 3000 Mhz kit 2x8 CL15, thinking of multiplying my PCs, and I'm not sure?
Great video as usual but will you be doing a review of the 6 heatpipe 2 fan variant of the Snowman? Also comparing it to the 4 heatpipe single vs dual fan variant would be a good comparison. Keep up the great work!
Question of the Day... You follow the yes man and you still ask which cooler he'd recommend? Snowman should sponsor the show or atleast give some kickback.
Don't most x570 boards not support SLI (splitting the x16 socket)? I'm actually planning to downgrade from an Asus X570-P to B550 mainly to get away from the fan (Asus still hasn't added PCH fan control!🙄), and to be able to run more Gen 4 NVmes. Essentially gain 8 Gen4 lanes and loosing 2 (50%) from the chipset is a worthwhile compromise to me. PS: It would be good to see a like for like comparison of power usage (X550 draws too much power IMHO).
Great review Tech YES City! Strange that no one else got this board for review. It seems this board is delayed since it is not available anywhere, I heard it is due to the Human malware situation. So it is 15 days delayed in some parts of the world. I Preordered this so hoping to get my hands on it soon here in Sweden. One minor thing though, you did not show us what was included with the board inside the box. Regarding front panel USB Type C connectors on the mobbos. It is worth pointing out in future reviews for instance that the Gigabyte B550 boards even the top end Master one is missing one of those and THAT IS SHOCKINGLY BAD considering the price of that board! And some of them like the popular MSI Tomahawk one only have the front connector as gen 1 meaning maximum 5GB/s so not the good kind the Gen 2 with 10GB like this ASRock one have. No reviewer seems to be pointing these things out.
Great review mate, always good to see a fellow Aussie giving the goods. Hope you get the opportunity to do some reviews on 1 or 2 of the ITX b550 boards :)
For some reason it seems bios updates through the internet has been removed from the bios for most, if not all motherboard brands unfortunately. Not sure why considering how useful it was at least with my usage.
Finally an Asrock B550 review on RUclips, thank you! Do you plan on reviewing the Steel Legend B550? I'm going to build a new gaming/editing PC this summer and I love the new Steel Legend design but I dont want to blind buy it.
Being a fan boy is not recommended. Motherboard performance changes with the wind. One year MSI is on top, the next year Asus. Its never the same so do your homework on sites like this. Asrock has been under performing on their under $300usd boards.
@@tonkatoytruck I'm not an Asrock fanboy, but I like their Steel Legend series because of the good looks. I'm going to watch the most important b550 reviews, that's why I said I won't blind buy a board.
According to this spreadsheet (docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PuUWroxA0HvSSipsXlB8hnYkshxD8LdeO5EA6WLdOQw/edit#gid=0) from this Reddit post (www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/hao9ab/amd_b550_mobo_vrm_list_with_some_spec/) the Steel Legend uses the same components as the Taichi, the main difference being that it only has 12 Vcore phases instead of 14 (same with the Extreme4 and PG Velocita as well). Based on that I think it should also have really good VRMs, but I would also like to see an actual review of it with real testing to be sure. I was still really glad to see this review because of that though.
I still don't get why most if not all AM4 X570/B550 boards put those 5GHz memory speeds on the box or website. All of those familiar with Zen2 know that if you run your memory speeds outside of Zen2's RAM/F'Clock's 1to1 ratio (which is about 3600MHz-3800MHz on the RAM and about 1800MHz-1900MHz on the F'Clock) would watch there performance fall off a cliff. What benefits is there running your ram at 4000MHz-5000MHz if all it does is cripple the systems performance. Maybe a CPU-z or AIDA64 screenshot is all about those memory speeds are worth. That's one main reason i stuck with intel. I have a couple kits of 4000CL15 Elite dimms that were collecting dust, so i put together another 3 Gaming PC's to sell and used 3 more z390 ASUS XI (11) HERO's and 3 i9 9900's. What nobody realized or just plain missed is that the regular i9 9900's have a max turbo boost clock of 5GHz. So using MCE or all core turbo, you can run all cores at 5GHz. I'm almost dumb-founded that no one has done this or even made a video about this. Well, i'm sure plenty knew, they probably didn't want to lose there intel connection for showing others how to basically do non-K overclocking...lol. Though, really this time its on intel, for making the 9900's boost clock 5GHz. When someone hears 5GHz 9th Gen i9, they know its good for gaming...Also with z370-z390 boards, DDR4 can also be overclocked with 8th or 9th Gen non-K CPU's. Not sure about 10th Gen. I think intel put another road block in place for that. Just like there VROC keys on early x299. Why would they take away another budget overclocking option like RAM overclocking on non Z-series boards when that all everyone's been screaming for. AMD have at least listened. Anyways... I've made great gaming rigs using 5GHz non-K i9's running 4GHz kits of Sammy B-die. Throw in a few $900 eVGA 2080ti's and you got yourself a top of the line gaming PC. With DELL, HP and all those Custom PC venders like Xidax or Cyberpower selling the same spec't out builds at sometimes over $3000-$3500, I had no issues selling one of these builds for $2500 or more, depending. Lets just say i bought out Micro Centers 9th Gen. i9's (K's and non-K's) along with there what z390 boards they had left. Ram kits too. 32GB kits of GSkills Trident Z RGB 3200CL16 were only $180. I bought the last five kits they had in stock. That's $90 for a 16GB kit of nice RGB ram. For 16GB's of GSkills Ripjaws V 3200CL16, it was only $60 a kit. $80 for the 16GB kits of 3600CL16. All these kits can overclock to atleast 3733CL17 and that's the worst single dimms. I've had 2 out of 20 dimms that couldn't do 3800CL17, even with all the voltage in the world. The IC's just wouldn't. So i paired those 2 lesser 8GB dimms and overclocked'em to 3733CL17. Called it a job well done. No medium rare overclocks here. Some awesome deals on new RAM though. 64GB's of 3200CL16 for $240. I remember paying that for a 16GB kit of GSkills FLARE X 3200CL14 Samsung B-die. I think that RAM was the only new components i bought. All that RAM will help out on some future builds i have planned. I only do this on the side but, it hasn't been a better time to buy last years high-end PC components, then right now. So, i'm investing a little more of my time to this PC stuff i love. I recommend going to your local Micro Center or if you got a first party PC components vendor somewhere near you, go empty out there stock. I've got up to 70% off of some major parts like GPU's, CPU's, RAM and motherboards. I even got a whole pallet of 2018 32inch 144Hz Freesync LG-650GKF monitors for 70% off. Those exact monitors are going for $300-$350 right now. Just last week these discounts did not exist. I hope you guys find the deals like i got. I wish these were online so i could share the goods.
You got me confused in the first minute, the chart says B550 gives 4 PCIE 3.0 lanes and 8 PCIE 2.0 lanes. How does that contribute to PCIE 4.0 lanes as the manufacturers advertising it right now
Hi I got this board and I have 1 problem. Every time i save and exit from bios it does not restart immediately I need to press the reset button again to boot up. Please help me.
2024. I just upgraded my X470 Taichi with an 5950X for just 260€ and changed to 128 GB DDR4 RAM. Now I have problems with virtualization. The guest systems flicker, even if they are switched off. So I strongly suspect the X470 ith the latest 10.31 BIOS upgrade. What a pitty. I will try out the B550 Taichi which goes by 220€.
It's a better board. It even fixed the internal USB Type C header positioning problem that the X570 had. You give up a bit of I/O but personally, I wouldn't be using that I/O anyway. I most likely wouldn't even be taking advantage of the PCIE4.0 M.2 slot, as I prefer Samsung SSDs. Maybe Samsung will eventually make a PCIE4.0, I think there's a 980 Pro coming but it won't be cheap. And even if so, I'd only need one of them. 3000mb/s is fine for a second drive. Heck, even 1000mb/s is.
In America on Newegg, they are the same price too; $299. Which board to get depends on your needs. If you need maximum connectivity then X570 is best. But if you only need "normal" amounts of drives/slots used then B550 would suit your fine. Two things I have to give the win to the B550 Taichi for are that it doesn't have the chipset fan, and it LOOKS so much nicer than the X570 model.
I'll be interested in seeing how the Asrock Extreme4 X570 and B550 compare. The x570 Extreme4 is the board I have been considering for a Zen2 now build, and then upgrade to Zen3 later. It isn't as nice as the Taichi boards, but costs a lot less and has all the key features I need.
This is why AMD tried to pull out the 4000 from the older chipset, the motherboard manufacturers started to feel the heat, from loosing Intel's cosmic overpricing advantage... They should give alternatives, at any price point, if not, it's easy, don't buy anything.
I've notice the much higher prices on many of the B550 boards. I'm assuming some of this is still due to production and shipping problems related to the pandemic. The other is that there are some really beefier components + VRM on many boards.
On r/AMD reddit, Gigabyte may have outed a new "X590" chipset from AMD in their newest BIOS release for some boards. There might be some truth to this.
Hello Tech Yes City, I’m located on the Sunshine Coast and trying to get a price performance system, and was wondering if you can build a $900 dollar system the best you can and I would love to buy it. Keep up with the good work. I love you videos
Have you looked at the B550 Phantom Gaming ITX/ax? I’m sorry, but you cannot justify a board starting at $200 USD and not include an external Clear CMOS button or BIOS Flashback. And with all that left over space on the rear I/O would it have killed them to include a PS/2 combo port? Heck, AMD should be REQUIRING BIOS Flashback on ALL AM4 mobos except MAYBE the A320/A520 etc. since those are intended mostly for uses where it is INCREDIBLY unlikely that someone will be upgrading the CPU without upgrading the whole platform. I don’t mean that it should be banned from the A320/A520, just not required.
btw, whats that old song that had the lyrics "we are the city" or sth, also whats the outro song?

Even a good B450 board will handle an overclocked 3950x. So, if you are not going to upgrade your cpu again any time soon, save your money and get the Tomahawk. $115usd
Well, it's not entirely untrue that a B450 tomahawk can handle a more demanding CPU relatively fine and availability here seems to be ok. Still, looking to the future, I'd rather have gen4 support from the chipset, better VRM overall, more SATA ports, support for higher frequency RAM etc. Plus, not knowing the power figures for zen3 a B450 seems to be kind of an iffy choice. So an X570 does seem to be the best choice, all things considered.

The Features of the Asrock B550 Taichi are great and it looks great too, but the price is a catastrophe, or as we in Germany say a moonprice, it´s just too expensive! A good mainboard shouldn´t cost much moore than 200 US-Dollars or 200 Euros in general!

Not sure if I did the right thing but whatever. Paid 210$CDN+tx for my TUF Gaming X570-Plus, when the average B550 is between 180-200$... Hmm... Other than maybe one or two B550 at 140$CDN, they are ALL at LEAST 180$CDN, compared to B450 which is between 100$CDN to ~140$CDN for the average board.

@@SISSYPUSS You are saying that I am wrong by putting up your own rumors that these fans will last for years although there is not a single fan that ran for years (as the boards are not that old yet). unlike Intel which is all classes of chipset release at the same time when new Generation CPU release, such as 10 Gen core CPU, u have Z490, H470, B460 & H410 AMD maybe due to their manufacture ability, their chipset release class by class X570 with Ryzen 3rd Gen > B550,1 year delayed >A520 when around Ryzen 4000 release in 2020 Q3/Q4.
I think the delay will mean there'll be no B650 when X670 comes out it'll be the same as X570 and B450 were then skip to B750 or whatever they do for Zen 4/AM5
Conza x670 most likely b650 for OEM manufacturers. (Same as. 550 but tiny tweaks). X670 ill take those things that Are better in b550 and implement those with old x570 features.
Cheers mate, first review I've seen of this board. Features and hardware wise, it's my favorite AMD board right now, everything I need but without a chipset fan. I want to use this board for the next 5 years. One thing you didn't mention is that the internal gen 2 header on the X570 was in a really bad place, it's been fixed now with the B550. The only thing that could prevent me getting this motherboard is bios or hardware bugs that might show up after people start using them. Little things like random BSODs, wierd bootup/POST issues or coming in and out of sleep properly in Windows, or other quirks that I don't want to have to put up with. I've been using Intel for 10 years and my current OC'd Intel system is 6 years old and hasn't had a BSOD all year. Not one. This kind of experience seems rare with AMD. A lot of AMD users seem to think BSOD are normal. They shouldn't be. Anyways, this is the highest end board on B550 platform, it even has a backplate, and it's the only board with 8 SATA ports. It's also the only board that doesn't disable a PCIE slot, if you use the second M.2 slot.
@@christopherjames9843 I'm not saying I've never had BSOD. On this same Intel system I've had them, early on it was the Corsair RAM I was using (at stock XMP). I would have 10 BSOD a year (completely random). It could run Prime95 for days in a row.. but out of the blue, during idle.. it would just blue screen. After a few years, I upgraded to better Corsair RAM and most of them went away. My CPU degraded a little over time, so I backed off on the clocks a little. But 6 years since buying it.. in 2020.. no BSOD in 6 months. PC systems are complicated, it's hard to generalize. It's not necessarily an Intel vs AMD thing, but on this specific system it's as close to perfect as I've ever had. And I do see a lot of talk on AMD reddit.. where people talk about BSOD a lot. It could simply be.. these are gamers with budget hardware that are pushing their systems too hard. There's so many things that can cause them, from the software side, graphics drivers, USB drivers.. it can be anything. I even saw some comments in the last 24 hours that Windows updates do it too. Generally though, I think people push their memory controller or memory frequency too hard. My main point is.. once you get used to never having them, it's hard to go backwards.
Very informative! Thanks!

Though..at the moment B550 Taichi costs more than it's X570 counterpart around here..
I'm waiting for the 4000 series to launch before I buy this motherboard.
12:05 had the same problem yesterday one of the motherboard backplate hole failed and my stock cooler was uneven i was getting 93 degrees
I have been watching this channel for a while now. Like the content! thanks so much!
Watching this in 2024!! It is still a very good review
Yeah, clear CMOS button would have been icing on the cake for the Extreme4. ASRock finally released a nice Extreme4 line board after long time.
The are images and rumours of the A 520 budget motherboards to be released.
Its official, I think its september. It's on AMD's own website.
Did they ever update the bios to have the missing features, Polychrome RGB and web based updating?
Rocking with 3700x with 570 taichi
Thank you for testing the audio circuitry. I care way more about audio than VRMs
Just bought this board! Waiting for it! Wooo
2:10 Wait, I thought B550 had PCIe 4.0 lanes from the CPU? I'm confused, or is this chart only talking about PCH lanes?
he's talking about chipset lanes (PCH) 16 CPU lanes go to the the top 16x slot, 4 CPU lanes go to the chipset which are then divided into the 4 3.0 lans and 8 2.0 lanes.
@@kognak6640 good spotting. 😋👍.
Merry cheers for AMD, products😋🎉. Selling off like Hawt cakes 🎂🎉till the end of this year. 😚❤️
B550 is finally here
The long wait is over
RYZEN 3 3300X FTW
You ever get that 3300X?
Awesome Vid! Love the thoroughness. Hopefully more b550 motherboards can be tested/reviewed like so. This is Priceless pre-purchase information.
Ps. Huge thanks also for mentioning prices in AUD currency and not Just USD like some other channel does.
Now that's what I call a motherboard review!
I had my heart set on an MSI B550m Mortar rather than the Tomahawk (I don't have the room for a full ATX) but according to one of the first reviews out there by PC Gamer when stressed out with an 3950X:
"We did witness alarming power draw on this board though, and performance
during testing was erratic, to say the least. Cinebench performance
dropped considerably towards the end of the initial sweep of testing"
Would be nice to know if this was a one-off with their sample as I've now got doubts.
That was awesome. Can you make a video about rx580 vs gtx 1660 with 4th Gen i5 cpus?
i wana know which one is compatible with old cpu.
Finally someone admitting all the weirdness around B550
Hello Mind helping me reach 600 subs?
Great video as usual but will you be doing a review of the 6 heatpipe 2 fan variant of the Snowman? Also comparing it to the 4 heatpipe single vs dual fan variant would be a good comparison. Keep up the great work!
When do the b550 Mainboards release
Question of the Day... You follow the yes man and you still ask which cooler he'd recommend? Snowman should sponsor the show or atleast give some kickback.
air cooler should compete too like intel vs amd so i can buy 1$ air cooler
I bought this one, it's also pretty cheap.
Arctic Freezer 7 X
There is actually SLI support for some B550 motherboard like the Asus strix B550-E.
at a penalty as those lanes are through the chipset and not direct to the cpu
Some of the asus boards are more expensive than the x570 boards in the uk .
I'm waiting for cheap b550 comparisons because that would be interesting
For some reason it seems bios updates through the internet has been removed from the bios for most, if not all motherboard brands unfortunately. Not sure why considering how useful it was at least with my usage.
Do you remove the sticky plastic on the back of the cpu mounting bracket? First time AMD builder here.
Bryant Allen because it is bigger Number and bigger Number sells even if it does not have any relevantti to real usage!
You got me confused in the first minute, the chart says B550 gives 4 PCIE 3.0 lanes and 8 PCIE 2.0 lanes. How does that contribute to PCIE 4.0 lanes as the manufacturers advertising it right now

In Australia, the B550 Taichi costs as much as the X570 Taichi.
I saw that too! At both Scorptec and Mwave they are both listed for $569?
Honestly stupid if you ask me...
In Europe B550 Taichi costs more then the x570 Taichi.
In the US ITS THE SAME. This board is better.
They are almost identical in thermals. Hardware Unboxed.(not very good)
Wow this is an excellent review, very comprehensive, instant sub/bell
This is why AMD tried to pull out the 4000 from the older chipset, the motherboard manufacturers started to feel the heat, from loosing Intel's cosmic overpricing advantage...
They should give alternatives, at any price point, if not, it's easy, don't buy anything.
I've notice the much higher prices on many of the B550 boards. I'm assuming some of this is still due to production and shipping problems related to the pandemic. The other is that there are some really beefier components + VRM on many boards.
Also, B550 technically replaces X470 chipset while you still have B450 for budget option
I think manufacturers want to replace entry-level x570 with these B550
On r/AMD reddit, Gigabyte may have outed a new "X590" chipset from AMD in their newest BIOS release for some boards. There might be some truth to this.

Would be nice for a steampunk build

I'm looking for a new mobo but I'm not too keen on changing out my 2600 until zen3 comes along, so B550 is a no-go. X570 seems to be the best option.

You can come back to me in 5 years and then find out who was right. Right now you are just claiming something you cannot prove. I am only saying that something that does not exist (a fan on the b550 board) cannot break and that statement is valid right now and not "maybe in 5 years true".
Long live X58
B550 Taichi costs in Europe the same or more then X570 Taichi. Asrock is insane. I was expecting max. 250€ and not current 340€ which is more then x570 version.
unlike Intel which is all classes of chipset release at the same time when new Generation CPU release, such as 10 Gen core CPU, u have Z490, H470, B460 & H410
AMD maybe due to their manufacture ability, their chipset release class by class X570 with Ryzen 3rd Gen > B550,1 year delayed >A520 when around Ryzen 4000 release in 2020 Q3/Q4.
I have to disagree on BSOD's. To say Intel has less BSOD than AMD is anectdotal and hasn't been my experience.
My main point is.. once you get used to never having them, it's hard to go backwards.
taichi系列供电一直都很好的,我的9700k 1.37v 5.0GHZ fpu烤鸡,温度85,主板是z390 taichi
Hello Mind helping me reach 600 subs?
如果预算不够上旗舰主板,taichi和aorus elite这两个系列的供电配置也是不错的,都是次旗舰的供电
0:40 False. B550's general purpose lanes are PCIe 3.
please do a video on the best settings overall for warzone !
Tobias Myklebust - Larsen my 2070 on high 1080 runs about 120 frames in warzone, and up to 160 in some multiplayer maps
Alright bro the steampunk look is sick..
Anyone know if it’s a good idea to buy pc parts off amazon that are coming from the US?
Would my 3300x run on this board?
Ofcourse
Uh this video is wrong or I'm dumb. My b550m has pcie 4.0 x 16, pice 3.0 x 16 so why do you say b550 doesn't have pcie 4? I have 16 lanes on my board.
