Let's explore the particular and unique Salinas tower, which takes its name from the pond of the same name and is part of the historic coastal defense system.
The fortification has a square plan that develops over three floors and is tapered towards the top.
It was built around 1650 to defend the Saline del Colostrai, property of the "Curatoria dell’Incontrada del Sarrabus", and to warn the populations of the dangers that came from the sea through a visual connection with the Torre dei Dieci Cavalli and Capo Ferrato. It was restored in 2003.
BACKGROUND
Inhabited since ancient times, Muravera has developed on the open space of the plain, free from natural obstacles. It has been part of the Giudicato of Gallura since the end of the 13th century, then it underwent Pisan domination until 1324, the year of the Aragonese invasion and the imposition of the feudal regime.
It then passed to the Marquisate of Quirra until 1839, when the feuds were abolished and the territory was divided into municipal domains.
In this period Muravera becomes the capital of Sarrabus and is inserted in the province of Lanusei first and later in that of Cagliari.
The area has always been subject to Moorish invasions, following which the populations moved from the coasts to the interior and for whose defense the Saline, Dieci Cavalli, Capo Ferrato and Cala Towers were built in 1600. Pyre.
Torre Salinas beach is 8.7 km long. The back beach is characterized by the presence of a sandy cordon and modest dune fields partly colonized by shrub and arboreal vegetation only partly autochthonous that separate the beach from the vast wetland of the San Giovanni lagoon.
The area is bordered to the north by the promontory of Porto Corallo and to the south by the granite promontory of Torre Salinas determines a more visual than dynamic separation with the Colostrai beach.
The entire coastal system is currently in a situation of imbalance - the result of the negative influence of artificial reservoirs, of the quarrying activities in the riverbed, of the reclamation and control works of the Flumendosa which previously contributed significantly to the natural nourishment of the beach.
The shore line is currently receding, although not high.
The Colostrai beach, almost 2 km long and bordered by the homonymous pond and salt flats, is surrounded by Mediterranean scrub and protected by dunes.
The beach is characterized by sediments of an extremely variable nature, the sand has a characteristic grayish color as a consequence of the important presence of fragments of rocks of a metamorphic nature.
The backshore of the coastal system of Colostrai is characterized by the presence of extensive dune fields largely stabilized by pine reforestation that are inserted within interesting juniper and mastic plant coverings.
The Colostrai lagoon, used for production purposes, with large openings to the sea protected by artificial piers, is present in the area behind the dunes. The presence of artifacts and buildings, together with the excessive summer tourist load, affects the dynamics of the sandy bodies and stabilized dune fields that show signs of decay.
Currently the beach appears to be in erosion probably following the deepening of the terminal stretch of the Picocca and an interaction with the lack of detrital contributions by the Flumendosa.
