    Hi guys! I'm a recent fan from Brazil. You do an AWESOME job! It has been a pleasure watching earlier videos from your channel - which I discovered only two weeks ago! I love Joseph's hillarious summaries, Nick's very rich observations, and both of you guys' sincerity in your reviews. They are a breath of fresh air!
    I would also like to thank you for giving movie spoilers. Some times they are actually quite important if a person wants to decide to watch a movie or not. And such was the case here. I had high hopes for this movies because I have been a great fan of Agagtha Christie's novels ("Death on the Nile" being one of my favorites). Seeing your review was very important because I realized Kenneth Branagh changed the plot COMPLETELY. This is not a joke. Based on what you've said, he basically changed all the main suspect characters and their backgrounds, which are actually superb in the book. All the possible motives make sense in the original story, and some of the comments the book makes about prejudice and even politics are very contemporary. Just as a comparisson, Branagh was somewhat faithful in "Murder on the Orient Express", maintaining most of the original charcters and their motivation. If it wasn't for you guys I would have watched the movie in theatres and gotten very frustrated. Perhaps I will watch one day, on streaming. That said, I highly recommend the original 1970s movie, with Peter Ustinov, and even the special episode of the Poirot series. They are both much more faithful to the original material and (specially the Ustinov version) very good movies.
    And please, keep making your videos! They are wonderful reviews, but you also make fantastic recommendations (I chacked Janelle Monae's "Antebellum" because of you guys!). I hope your channel gets thousands more of subscribers! All the best!

  • @thelookuplookdown

    The 1978 version (with Peter Ustinov as Poirot) was brilliant where (spoiler alert) the 2 "killers" were cast and portrayed far more sympathetically and likeable so once the 'reveal' comes it was a genuine surprise and the double death/suicide at the end a tragic (almost Shakespearean) footnote. Peter Ustinov did a few more Poirot's after this, but this was probably his best (though David Suchet will forever remained unequaled in the part). Thank you for the honest review which also highlights what not to do when adapting a Christie novel from page to the screen. Michael - South Africa.

    • @christopherhuang9501
      @christopherhuang9501 2 года назад

      One thing I didn't like about the Ustinov version was that it went all out to give absolutely everybody a motive, which rather strained my suspension of disbelief. Sounds like this version is trying the same thing. The book, and the Suchet version, didn't do this, and were much better for it.

    • @thelookuplookdown
      @thelookuplookdown 2 года назад

      @@christopherhuang9501 Agree - but then 78's "Nile" was a follow up to the highly successful 1974 "Murder on the Orient Express" where everyone (with good reason) was a suspect so in a way they wanted to keep the "formula". What I love about the 78 is the style, elegance, incomparable cast, magnificent costumes by Anthony Powell and brilliantly bravado score by Nino Rota. No one could ever equal Suchet so, for me, he is in a league of his own...

(Armie didn’t need to kill Gal that early, so his motive is just psycho). And #2) don’t kill the murderers in the end. It ruins the pay of off.
    Plus all the awesome points you guys made.

    Considering the Orient Express was terrible, I'm not surprised that this one's also bad. Branagh took a tense, claustrophobic story and made it weirdly grandiose with all the mountain shots and the dramatic "last supper" scene in the train tunnel... It just didn't fit and it seems like he did the same thing here. It's such a shame 'cause Agatha Christie's whodunnits are really fun and well crafted while these movies just suck the life out of them.

    Unless the killers are completely stupid, this is an idiotic plan. When Simon and Jackie found out the greatest detective in the world was going to be one the boat, they should have canceled the plan because they would have loads of time to come up with a different plan when a detective isn’t around. Second, after Jackie fakes shooting Simon, what happens in one of the other two people picked up the gun? Their whole plan would be screwed and Simon would have no explanation for why he faked getting shot. Third, since Simon was hold the handkerchief with the red paint with his bare hand, that red paint could have so easily been transferred onto the couch or anything else he touched including the door handle of his wife’s room.

    The only thing about redoing Christie book movies is Peter Ustinov; who played Perot in movie adaptations in the 1980’s. He was WONDERFUL in the role. This seems like a big studio movie that could have been made in about 1948 but not in a good way! A lot of the scenic backgrounds are obviously computer generated, it has some interesting stuff but I give it a C+ . Again it seems like an attempt to recapture old school style filmmaking while adding some slight bits of social commentary and checking the needed casting boxes…it’s just not that well done. Not terrible but not a great movie by any means.

    The movie looks great if a little too clean if that makes sense. Kenneth Brannagh has absolutely ruined Poirot as far as i am concerned. I am not a Christie purist but turning Poirot into some sort of selfdoubting, lovelorn, emo-esque semi action hero is so far from the Poirot from the novels that it is just too jarring for me.i dont mind them changing Salomé Otterbourne from a writer to a singer, that's fine. Another thing that was just too forced was the lesbian "twist". It doesnt need it, it adds nothing really.

    I'm a HUGE fan of the David Suchet version of Poirot, and there will never be a better portrayal. Period.
    I do think Branagh's Christie remakes are good, but not worth rewatching. His Poirot character is probably more true to the book, but his portrayal lacks the depth that Suchet has cultivated over many years of playing him.
    I have watched every Poirot movie (with Suchet) multiple times. They grow more dear each time.
    The movie, Murder On The Orient Express, with Suchet, is ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT! I rewatch it regularly. The last scene, where Poirot walks away from the train with tears in his eyes, is sooooo powerful.
    You owe it to yourselves to watch this one! (WITH SUCHET!)

    The people on the boat are not part of a wedding party, not in the Christie novel nor in the previous film versions; they are simply people taking a cruise, except for a lawyer who has been swindling the heiress and has come on board the cruise in order to get her to sign some documents. The main premise in the novel is that wherever the new couple will go, his former girl-friend will suddenly pop up to spoil things for them, and to scare the Gal Gadot character. She shoots her former lover in the leg in order to give him an alibi in his wife's murder...he could not walk so he could not have sneaked all over the boat to get to her and kill her but that too is explained by Poirot later. The best version, as in Murder on the Orient Express, was the first version.

    Why keep telling us you do not know who the director is? Look him up! He has done so many great films. Do your research!

    Why are we listening to a movie review from a guy who knows nothing about movies?
    He’s never even heard of many well known movies?

    Review is too scattered and inconsistent.
