THIS SONG WAS WAY HARDER THAN I'D HOPED IT WOULD BE. Free tab at Danieljamesguitar.com, if you dare. I'd like to dedicate this attempt of a cover to "The Coneheads".
Actually, practicing this wasn't so bad. However, when the camera is rolling, and the audio recording, that's when you notice things more literally. Every note which is even the slightest bit sour starts to stand out like a sore thumb. For that reason, recording this drove me more insane than the usual fingerstyle cover, because there's so much opportunity for those sour notes- with the quick bass line playing over the vocal melody, that weird moment where it changes to G major suddenly, and the bounce slaps. I practically suffered a stroke at the 1:20 minute mark, you'll probably notice.
To be honest, I think I could've done take after take and gotten a cleaner version of this, but that might've taken the rest of the week, and having to focus so much on avoiding every last error drives me insane after a while. I was going to include some of the others takes I made and failed, as sort of a blooper reel, but they actually weren't that comical. This song was surprisingly too brutal for me to remain even a little cheery. If I wasn't wearing a hat, I might've torn my hair out. It made me feel like sometimes, dare I say, I've got to, run away, I've got to, get away.

That's some slick balance between the voices. I used to love this song after watching Coneheads as a kid. "UNH UNH GET AWAY!" You weren't kidding though, that looks like a beast to play. Love it!

Hey there, thanks for your comment! So this song is a little tricky. I might do a tutorial on it, but in the meantime I can give you some tips to play it. I also have the tab for it online, just in case you didn't already notice that (danieljamesguitar.com/tabs). Everything revolves around basically just the 4 chords (E, G, C, A), so try to remember that if you find yourself having difficulties. To play the main riff, you have to bounce your right hand thumb off the string, as opposed to just slapping it. You do this, in order to create the slap sound while also creating the note sound.

Every time I think I'm making progress with fingerstyle I meet a piece like this looks deceptively simple on a TAB sheet. I keep watching the video, nodding to myself, and thinking "I'm sure I can do that!" But my hands don't seem to be convinced I have any chance at all! :-)
Still, I've needed decent motivation to work on my percussive technique and this might be it. Thanks for the great inspiration.
Edit: ok, my percussive technique needs a lot of work, but once I stopped trying to play like you and just play something I can do, this came together nicely. Not a song I ever aspired to play (having not really been a Soft Cell fan when I was young) until I heard your version, but it's really satisfying to play. Thanks again.
