- A second instalment of handheld cine camera shots from the 1980’s. This selection was all filmed in 1982 with the exception of the opening shot of 4498 ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’ setting fire to Giggleswick Bank which was filmed in November 1981. Also seen in this video are the following;

34092 'City of Wells' - Horton in Ribblesdale
5690 'Leander' - Giggleswick Bank
46229 'Duchess of Hamilton' - Selside and Garsdale
5000 and 4930 'Hagley Hall' - Abergavenny
777 'Sir Lamiel' and 5407 - Appleby
13809 - Giggleswick Bank
46229 'Duchess of Hamilton' - Kettlesbeck Bridge and Giggleswick Bank
5690 'Leander' - Bell Busk
92220 ' Evening Star' - Craven Arms and then at Hereford
34092 'City of Wells' - Helwith Bridge and Kettlesbeck Bridge
5407 and 5690 'Leander' - Horton in Ribblesdale and Garsdale’
I absolutely adore these old clips of mainline running. This really was the golden age of rail tours where you had unique double headers and unusual engines in foreign territories. Nothing of this calibre today, not since a 7F and Evening Star left the main line scene. Superb footage, so honoured to be able to watch this. Also of note - Steam engines seemed to have a lot to shout about back then, especially Sir Nigel Gresley and Sir Lamiel.
Thanks very much. I agree with you about the mix of locos we enjoyed back then and I've always thought that loco performances were, shall we say, a bit more lively!
Thank you Austin. Very nice second part. These films now have a real historical value!
Philippe
Again thanks for this lovely bit of nostalgie. I hope we live to see 46229 in steam again!
This is priceless material Austin, that projector is giving excellent results, and without a doubt the best Cine footage I've seen on RUclips....Thanks for putting in so much effort to share this amazing footage with us...10/10 without a doubt!....Bob
Many thanks Bob, glad you're enjoying the films and to get a positive response makes the time spent copying the films worthwhile
Another superb instalment Austin - I could watch these all day - and it's a real treat to see cine with the original sound, rather than over-dubs. Great to see Wennington Box again, and the flame throwing antics in the first shot would put 5972 to shame!
Thanks again David, that evening with 4498 still sticks in the memory. I think it was a next to last run before an overhaul and the crew seemed keen to put on a show as they so often did in those days. Stand by for Leander and the Midland Compound!
Another wonderful set of nostalgic clips. The opening shot of the sparks flying out of 4498s chimney and the subsequent fires was astonishing. Great video. Cheers, Dave.
Thanks Dave, that run of 4498 is one I'll never forget, quite appropriate that it took place in November too!
What a feast - and you went to all of them! Lucky dog!! Glad you did, though as we can still enjoy them.
Thanks very much Alan, I certainly count myself fortunate to have witnessed these fine runs and they bring back so many memories of great days out with my late parents
Thanks once more for sharing your work.
My pleasure Tom, many thanks for watching
Amazing rail movie! Awesome old images with Steam Locomotives and passenger trains! Lovely sonds and great landscapes! Great stuff! Thank you for share! Thumbs Up
Best Regards from Romania
Andrew
Thanks Andrew, glad you enjoyed this nostalgic journey
Lost for words on this one Austin , brilliant footage that shows how dedicated you are !
Thanks Steve, not sure about dedicated, just a hobby that's provided a lot of happy memories and good days out. I think that's what it's all about
Fantastic footage in both parts. What a display by 4498. Quite alarming results compared to what occurs on the ML today. Awesome power from 92220 on a photo run past. Thanks for posting the two videos. I hope there is more to come!
Thank you very much, that run of 4498 still lives on in my mind, unforgettable and certainly not one that would go down too well today. Couple more episodes still to come
Another superb collection of clips Austin. Great footage to watch C&A
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed watching
Absolutely fantastic footage Austin... Had to smile in the first clip of 4498 setting fire to the bank....Should have re-named the Loco..'The Fire Starter ' lol... This is a second chance to look at your amazing collection of Rail Clips...very fascinating. Gives us an insight to the many Years you have been a Railway enthusiast...Well done....Steve.
Thanks Steve, indeed I've been doing this for a long time now and it's always been fun. Glad you're enjoying these golden oldies
Thank you for your comment
Some incredible footage from both uploads. Not a diesel banker or pilot in sight. Thanks for sharing regards Andy
Thanks Andy, carefree days they were and great fun when the crews seemed to enjoy themselves a lot more than they do now
great video with a steam locomotive
Thank you for watching, glad you enjoyed it
supers vidéo, merci!!
Merci beaucoup Denis
Wonderful collection of clips from 1981 Austin! As Bob says, these are priceless timepieces which really deserve to be kept for posterity and as a reminder of the locos in regular use at that time. I was very impressed with the start up of, firstly 5000 & 777, and later of Evening Star at a location I don't recognise. The locos concerned really let it rip blasting past you; where was it? The drivers all seemed more generous with the whistles than they do nowadays. Great work again and thanks for your hard work in putting them on line. Best wishes. Ken
Many thanks Ken, glad you're enjoying this archive footage. 5000 and 777 were seen in a runpast at Appleby then later at Ais Gill. Evening Star o a runpast at Craven Arms and then at Hereford where locos exchanged on the Welsh Marches Express. I should really have added location details originally but I'll go back and add them now and make sure further instalments have a bit more detail. Crews did seem more enthusiastic then and of course linesiders weren't considered the pariahs of the railway scene then
What can I say Austin other than I hope there is more to come from this series (and thank you to Ebay for providing you with the new projector)? Chris
Thanks Chris, the projector was a really good buy as previously it was touch and go when the old one would chew up another bit of precious film.
I do wish that evening star would run again. Matt
Wouldn't it be great Matt? Sadly I can't see it ever happening but stranger things have happened
Crikey, that's a heck of an opening shot. I hope you've sent a link to this to Network Rail at York, it'd really wind them up.
Some of those drivers were very whistle happy, weren't they.
Much more whistle about then than now I feel. Steam wasn't instantly banned after 4498 set fire to Giggleswick Bank! Thanks for watching
run out of welsh coal and had to use fireworks i think. Great set of films - thanks
Thank you, certainly created a few fireworks that night!
A good bit of nostalgia. You can see why they cancel rail tours to stop fires given the SNG shot.
Thanks, I think spark arrestors were introduced quite soon after that run!
Amazing pyrotechnics (or is it pyromania?) in the first sequence. We don't make coal like that any more!
Noel
Thanks Noel, that performance from 4498 is one I'll never forget. If I remember rightly it was a last but one run before overhaul and the crew were obviously out to enjoy themselves
