Why would organising a team event make you better than someone else? It has zero to do with your job. Unless, of course, your job is to organise events.

recognition is the name of the game but that is why i feel the challenging or "stubborn" mentality to improving performance and the "politics"start to enter and you have to be willing to be more patient and pick your battles with the hierarchy especially if you do it in a transparent, no hidden agenda but stern and solid manner. this is what i noticed is the difference between junior manager and directing manager and chief executives.
I've been a freelancer for a couple of years and started thinking about doing consulting and going to business school as a change of pace...But then this video reminded me of the annoying office politics...and why I chose to be a freelancer in the first place. lol. oh man..

Very good tips, I’m sure that the youngest suscriptors/viewers will really find them valuable as the sooner you understand this, the better for your career! I also was quite naïf at my junior years, hoping that like at school/university if you work hard you get the reward, but this doesn’t apply at the office, and sometimes you even see people promoting despite having lower performances than you!

Very good point dear Heinrich. You focused on "hard facts". Meaning to increase visibility by means of what you have actually achieved. In my point of view (yours probably too and I understand that you have to focus on one subject) visibility starts with "soft facts". Meaning the mere fact that you exist = networking. Probably the most simple step but still overlooked by many: get to know your colleges. I know it can be a hustle but start with the people you think you might like. That kind of gives me an upstream and keeps me motivated to get to know other colleges as well.

My colleague who left told others that i worked a lot and pasted an A4 paper with his writings to tell me to take a break once in awhile ~ ppl actually looked at my table where the paper is pasted and question me hahah
And one of them automatically helped me to request to reduce my workload to my boss.
My another colleague who worked way more than me , she complains her workload and people do not like it becuz most ppl dont like her
I am lucky to currently great colleagues compared to my previous job. And yeaa gotta let them know what we have been doing but not really show it on their face kind of method :D

I have been looking for advice like this for YEARS! never understanding how seemingly vulgar, manipulative & even toxic show offs would advance while it was obvious for me they were horrible choices. Just stumbled over this channel randomly and find it very interesting.
Nevertheless, at least for this specific video and even though it has been uploaded quite a while ago already, from 20 years of professional experience I can tell, that such things may sound reasonable in theory, but will often be pretty useless and of no help to young people in practice.
In reality, your boss for example often will not have many incentives to reward outstanding results, but quite the contrary only has incentives (for example: budget constraints) to keep things as they are. Maybe this is different for companies like McKinsey, where you are expected to grow into a position where you may be promoted in some way, but in most big corporations, because of such things, your direct boss mostly won‘t be of much (or even any) help to get promoted, no matter how well you communicate your achievements to him.
So as long as this video is not only directed to those working at McKinsey & Co., I would say it is an example of something, that sounds good in theory, but in most cases won‘t work in reality.

My current position on this is: write procedures and templates for yourself. Your Tip1 should be part of a self marketing process (collection of testimanials and case studies) When you deliver with consistency like a franchise, people will notice. This is not just about doing the work but documenting it in parrallel. Easy to say, hard to do on a daily basis

As I still make the videos with my smartphone, this is probably due to the distance between camera and display in which I see myself. Found you can't get anywhere being nice all the time and it takes new starts a while to build some backbone which you need for progression.

Hi, thanks for your question. Sure thing, and this is indeed what will happen most of the time. Though this is exactly where visibility can have a major impact. During designation season, the senior manager will reach out to the middle manager to collect feedback on the individual candidates. Most often, the feedback he receives is literally the only thing he knows about the candidate. If you manage to become more "visible" than your colleagues in a way that the senior manager already has some knowledge about you, e.g., from office events that you organize, this will be usually be quite an advantage for you.
