I love Lou and was very sad when he died, but I will say The Velvet Underground was vastly better than his solo career overall. I'm struggling to think of a more influential band than VU, maybe Joy Division, The Beatles, Chuck Berry, etc. But Lou was just one component to that band, and the others all brought their own unique sensibilities which made it special. There were still high points in Lou's solo stuff here and there, of course, like Transformer and Berlin, but basically after the 70s, he just stopped bothering to really sing, which ruined a lot of his later work. Can totally understand why a lot of people don't like him.
