    I got the Geopress when it was on Kickstarter. Got a bunch of filters with it as well. Still haven't used it since my walks are still dayhikes and I can just carry water from home with me. I hope to one day use it for at least the desert portion of the PCT because I've heard horror stories about water sources having dead rodents or manure. Would be heavy, but I'm loosing weight off my stomach now so I can carry more on my back when the time comes if necesary.

    I will allow myself to disagree on cross contamination. You're filling the container, your hands are wet in dirty water, you touch the lid, the cap, you touch everything, then you put cap back.
    Thus you inevitably contaminating clean side. Unless you're washing your hands and outer body before unscrewing the cap, which I seriously doubt anyone does, as you need clean water for this.

      I have both the ultralight and new ultrapress and I can tell you they are the exact same bottle. The only differences are the colors and the design of the lid. You can buy an ultrapress lid separately and put it on the ultralight bottle. The filters are also the same.

    How many galllons will one filter?

    • @FT4Freedom
      @FT4Freedom 2 года назад +1

      Not good for me. About 8-15 gallons. It has great benefits but costly. 15 gallons max on clear water. A wet filter between trips causes much faster deterioration.

    • @robertphillips93
      @robertphillips93 2 года назад +1

      Actually, Grayl says this size is good for about 40 gal per filter cartridge. For me, that's enough to justify the extreme convenience and robustness of these units for the cost. So much depends on your operating conditions and the quality of the anticipated water sources. If there's no way to remove high turbidity by pre-filtering, then the inability to back flush these might be a significant issue. But their ability to survive inadvertent freezing could be important for some people. Like any filter, the clock starts ticking when it's first used -- trapped contaminants and minerals eventually impair useable lifespan.

    • @FT4Freedom
      @FT4Freedom 2 года назад +1

      @@robertphillips93 I use it too. Definitely has benefits. But doesn't quite fit the hype.

    • @robertphillips93
      @robertphillips93 2 года назад

      @@FT4Freedom Totally agree -- the filter medium is nothing revolutionary, like lifestraw was back in the day, but it does appear to be a best in class carbon filter. That would be depending on whether the published virus and metal reducing claims are legit, of course . . .
