Thanks, WivoRN! I used to love "Team Cuteness" (back in the day fan name for Rafa and Marc). This tournament gave Marc the doubles points he needed to sign up for tournaments on his own and make a doubles career for himself after failing to quite make the grade as an ATP level singles player. I think Rafa was more aware of the situation then Marc was! At their post match presser Marc said only one thing: "I don't play at this level." I'd checked the rankings and I just throught, yeah, Marc, you do now! He was already 30 in 2010. At first he played with pick up partners, always Spanish speakers, but eventually Corretja, the year he was Davis Cup captain asked Marc to play doubles for DC. Marc said no, no I am a practice partner. Corretja said he wanted him to team up with another team mate and they'd be the doubles players. They made a very successful team, and even won year end championship! Later Marc paired with Feli Lopez and they won Roland Garros in 2016! That was an Olympics year and since both Rafa's and Marc's planned partners chose not to play, they played together and won Olympic gold in doubles!
People forget Rafa has *great hands*, on top of being a great ball-striker, as well as tactician. Side note: Zimonjic has a beautiful service motion, especially that flat first serve (look at those thumpers he put down in his first game).
2016 was the year Rafa and Marc won the doubles Olympic gold. This match was from a few years before that. I still remember the presser afterwards. All a stunned looking Marc found to say was "I don't play at this level."
