Instead of 2 small pieces of tape on either side, you could take one longer piece of tape & put a hole in it for the presta valve. Helpful info on how to adapt a presta tube to use in a rim with schrader hole. Thanks. I can't get this adapter anywhere. I'm sure other hacks might work, such as cutting a hole of rubber out of a used tire or other source, to make a sort of 'disk' at the base of the presta... maybe stack a few of them... or wrap the base of the presta with duct tape.... or search the hardware stores for odds/ ends to devise a solution.

was struggling to keep the adapter from sliding back into the rim, came here to see you explain putting it under the tape. very helpful

Your recommendation is actually relevant for some presta rims too! Some rims drilled for presta, have a larger schrader sized hole on the tire side. Why they do that, I don't know, but I use one of these valve adapters on such a rim (Mavic Open Sport) to better support the valve. I did have to cut the adapter shorter to fit, but haven't had a flat at the base of the valve since.
My other thought is that Continental inner tubes come with a shouldered valve retaining nut. One face of the nut is flat which you use against a presta rim, while the other has a ridge which recesses perfectly into a schrader hole. I suggest using one of these nuts if using a double-wall schrader rim.
The only downside with using these adapters is I find it's a little fussier getting the valve through the adapter: the sharp edge of the hole tends to snag threads on the valve when getting started. It's a minor nuisance, but I choose it over tearing valves off of tubes. Michelin tubes have unthreaded valve stems, and I suppose they'd be one way to address this, but it's not enough of an issue that I've bothered to try them.

Thanks Luns! I haven't come across a presta specific rim that had a large valve hole like you mentioned. Great to know.

Very helpful but learned the hard way on my own but I thought I check what's out there and found your video telling the viewers about it. I installed Presta in Schrader rim without the rim whole size reduction insert.. Upon a week worth of riding and I decided to put some extra air with pump and noticed whole tire flattened...I tried to force, it wouldn't take any. Later inspection of taking wheel off and checking inner tube, I noticed the rubber around the Presta valve was was halfway cut. The cut was caused due to loose Presta valve in the schrader valve rim hole causing the inner tube to wobble in and around the extra rim opening. All in all, this insert adapter is needed or otherwise the inner tube would rip around the valve. Again, thanks for the video and I'll run to buy a pair for the conversion.🙂

why on earth would you mount a presta on a schrader rim? you have the perfect valve system and you choose to use the one valve that needs an adapter and special pump head while the schrader can be used any gastation/bikestation on this planet...

My other bikes are all presta, the rear is presta for the trike and my mini pump is presta. If I get a flat I don't want to have to switch pumps depending on the tire that's flat. But you're right, Schrader can be perfectly acceptable.

Thanks for the vid. I wish they would offer those adapters with threads on the inside so I could screw it to my presta valve before
I install the tube. That might help prevent loss. I just checked amazon and those are $7 for two of them now. Wow.

Hell what I do is just cut the tip off an old presta valve cap (i have plenty to spare) and screw it down upside down.

I use sticky cloth rim tape... It appears that they have a presta sized hole. Even if used on a Schrader rim, the tape supports the presta valve. Haven't had a problem with valve tears on the tube

Is it okay to use a longer adapter designed for a double walled rim on my non-double walled or single walled rim. I was in a pinch and had to do it that way. It works so far but maybe not a good idea in the long term? Thanks for your great teaching. You make a good teacher as you explain things so clearly and not all teachers have that talent. I liked and subscribed.

Yes I think a longer adapter should be okay. Just remember it's not for tubeless tires. Thanks for subscribing.

Even with the tape pieces, I find that the adapter falls out of place sometimes. What's wrong with putting the adapter on the outside?
    Thanks

    • @pedalpowercycling
      @pedalpowercycling  Год назад

I don't think it fits from the outside of the rim inwards properly. It won't do its intended purpose and protect the tube. If you want it permanently installed you can try to superglue it in.

The rear wheel on the trike is presta only 700c so if i get a flat tire, my spare pump can easily work with front or rear presta tubes.

I would not try tubeless with this. It doesn't have rubber to seal the valve hole.

I know this is an old comment but there are Schrader tubeless valves out there. Stans sells them and so do some other companies. Honestly, for tubeless I would prefer all my big wheel bikes to be schrader. Presta sucks in a lot of ways for tubeless on a lot of bikes. If the hole is already schrader sized just go with that option.
