Hey Ross, this is great! Would love a similar video about steps to take care of baby in-ground trees!
Cutting back the watering and fertilizing to speed up lignification is *EXACTLY* the tip I really needed right now. First time fig tree grower here (Chicago hardy) and I've been amazed at how vigorous the growth is, but just the other day I was worrying about the fact that the trunk/branches aren't nearly woody enough for the coming Michigan winter. I really appreciate you sharing your fig knowledge, thanks!
I've finally been able to grow figs on my tree.. the tree is 6 or 7 years old. I've watched many of your videos and early spring I cut back more than in past years , these 2 figs were the sweetest tasting figs I've ever had .. 5 new fig trees now growing from the cut backs.. pruning..Thanks again for all helpful advice.
Good to read that it took you that long Melinda. My fig tree ist 3 years old and did not produce any figs yet. I remain patient!😉

Yes, I'm in South Mississippi 8b, and my figs all get the rust and drop all their leaves in late Aug early Sept then they flush out again until December early Jan then they go dormant for a couple months
I lived in PA for15years, never seen people who has a fig tree before. I'm now in FL, fig trees are very common here. I just bought one called brown turkey, don't know how to take care of it. That's why I'm here to learn from you. Thanks for sharing the details, really helpful. 👍
I'm new to fig growing as well and am also growing a brown turkey here in central Texas. Now I'm noticing fig trees, whereas before, I never really noticed them. I recently saw one that was huge! I had no idea they could grow so big. Good luck for us! Our neighbors, as a kid, had a fig tree and although they didn't take great care of it, it still produced good figs. I can't wait.

About that rejuvenation cut . There is a similar instruction in a video I will link about cherry growing where the fruiting branch are grown off of a horizontal cordon. ( upright fruiting offshoots. UFO training ).
The first year of growing the vertical fruiting branches i let the offshoot grow unheaded then before the 2ed growing season im to prune the verticals almost down to the cordon.. that is eerily like your rejuvenation cut
As far as the instruction about the cherry growing I didn't realize the sufficient of the sever pruning to remove most of the vertical shoot. Your explanation of the rejuvenation cut has given me confidence to do what Greg Lang is saying about the removal of 99% of last years growth. You say that the rejuvenation cut will accelerate the upcoming seanon's growth on the fig and Gregg Lang says it will produce a better vertical offshoot for the upcoming growing season

Hi Ross You’ve taught me so much, I finally have figs on my trees which are in 5 gallon pots, the problem I’m having is that the figs get as big as a nickel and than dry up and stop growing or even stay that size turn purple and dry up. I need you expert advice Thanks! John

Hi, Ross! Thanks a lot for your many informative videos! You are really helpful! May I ask if we can cut the sucker that grow at the bottom of the fig and plant it separately? Thi is the common advice I hear about rasbery suckers. Will this new fig, a sucker before now planted separately, now bear fruit?
I have a caprifig in the ground near a water heater in something of a microclimate, and this beast does not go dormant nor does it look like it needs to. Probably one of my healthiest trees, but then again it is a male.
Ross, my name is Nick I live in Long Island I have been watching your amazing videos,I would appreciate your advice, I have three fig varieties a Black Jack an large Italian variety I don’t know it is name but it is delicious and a Petite Negra, I grow most of the trees in pots I wold like to add a Violet de Bordeaux to my collection but I hear so much controversy,some people say Petite Negra and Violet de Bordeaux are the same fig , I trust your advice,thank you Nick
Assuming your source is legit, they are the same variety.
My fig tree is basically an 8' vertical stick. How do I encourage branches, especially lower on the trunk?
How old are some of your potted pla ts ? Can you keep a Chicago hardy in a 10 gallon pot for say 5 to 10 years? Thanks

I'm in zone 7 b I have a brown turkey fig ...how cold can that handle? I've been putting in the garage but now its getting too big
You can't overwinter potted figs outside in 7B. Gotta keep the roots above 15F. Ideally above 20F.
I have 2 bensonhurst purple figs that are about 10 years old. They are very hardy, too hardy. I took your advice on one of your videos and pruned last February. They seemed to have doubled in size. I get many fruits and have grafted several trees from them. One must got bores when I grafted last year on some branches so I'm afraid to prune now. I'm in NJ near Philadelphia. How do I get them under control. They are very large, at least 8 to 10 feet high.
This is hardy Chicago.. I have one. Rey vigorous grower .. if you restrict their roots they should slowdown their growth and keep them smaller in size.

here in Abu Dhabi UAE, the summer is so hot we get up to 50C so we shade the trees up to 70% shade so they will not burn out from the Sun.
Do that coz fig tree to not make new figs?

Dyna Grow Protekt is just in addition to your normal fertilizer regimen right? I’m in the south and just ordered it but I see it as 0-0-3. Will it work for rust if just used in soil and not as a foliar spray?
Ross can correct me if I'm wrong, but it works best as a foliar spray. The silica needs to be consistently resupplied to the foliage because its easily absorbed and used by the plant. Its not a one and done sort of thing.
I can work at the soil level, but I recommend it as a foliar spray. Try both ways. See what happens.

I have 2 sucker branches. How and when should I remove those branches? One is coming out of the ground. The other branch is really close to the ground. I'm in zone 8a and my fig is in a container. Should I wait until the tree is dormant or can I do it now? It's August 8, 2020. Does anyone know? It's a Chicago hardy
You can take them out now. It won't hurt the plant. If you keep letting them grow they will take away energy from the main trunk.
@@josephjude1290 Thank you so much for your help! So what's the best way to remove them? I just went to look again and there are actually 3 branches underground and one small branch growing at the base on the main trunk above ground.
