I was there back in '75. The Wiz was every bit as much a part of that Broadway renaissance that happened with shows like A Chorus Line and Chicago, yet nobody ever includes The Wiz in that discussion. It was magical but its magic was purely theatrical; not the Hollywood stuff they use today. Also I was so disappointed when I bought the OBC recording and found that the overture wasn't included. So happy to hear it again! Thanks for posting.

One of Broadway's most dynamic and executed arrangements by the great Harold Wheeler. When I first heard it on the final Sunday matinee prior to the opening, I became mesmerized. What a joyful composition combining instruments of strings, reeds, synthesizers, percussion, and pit vocals. Hearing this, not the best quality, but it still brings me Joy!

Too old school and a fan-performer of the original 1975 score. Not a movie WIZ fan either
But know ye This: I witnessed them all and kudos to all the WIZ kids from 1975 to present who eased on down every production!

I don't know if I'm the only one who appreciates this enough to comment, but thank you so much for uploading all these wonderful, clearly original videos. I'm 17 and I live in Houston Texas, no chance I could've seen my favorite musical back when it first came out. But this is what got me interested in musicals to begin with. Now I've done seven shows with my high school all thanks to the wiz. I could go on and on but all in all thank you soo much and if you have anything else from the original show, even a two second clip, please post it for fanatics like me lol

The Wiz was the 1st Broadway musical I saw in 1978. I can't tell you how thrilled I am to be able to hear that overture after all these years, since it was not, alas, included on the cast album. I still wonder why as it is a gloriously beautiful arrangement of music. And yes, by the incomparable Harold Wheeler! Thank you!

Rian G. They do a little intro on the cast album but it's not much. Wow... please tell me... what was it like seeing it live ? Mable King ? Stephanie Mills ? Dee Dee Bridgewater ? What were there performances like ?

The Wiz Fan Being that it was the first show I saw on that scale, and that I was only 10, it was quite spectacular. Most of the original cast had left by 1978, from the names I remember, with a little help from ibdb.com, Gayle Lorene Turner was Dorothy, Gregg Burge was the Scarecrow, Tiger Haynes was still on as the Tinman, not sure if I saw L. Michael Gray or Michael Leslie as the Lion, Carl Hall was The Wiz, Deborah Burrell was Glinda (who I would later see in the nat'l tour of Dreamgirls in San Francisco on a night she went on as Deena Jones, she was the understudy), Ella Mitchell was Evillene. Hard to believe that was nearly 40 years ago!

Disappointing that a successful revival has not yet occurred and toured nationally. Was lucky to see the National Tour in San Francisco in the 70's. I wonder - does it need to be an all-black cast nowadays? I just want to see it again on stage.
