I have (what I believe to be) a ton of these in my yard. I must've planted them many years ago, back when I knew absolutely nothing about plants and just wanted some coverage. These are variegated, bloom yellow and white flowers, and are huge...taller than me. They are taking over an entire side of my house, along with some various alocasia, colocasia, Mexican petunia, and some sort of iris. I've never fertilized or watered like I should've been, but they pop back up every spring with a vengeance. Had no idea they could be used for shampoo! That's so awesome.
Same with me. I bought a house couple years ago. I have these all over the yard. Hacked through them with the machete. 😂 Still have them coming back but think I let a bunch more stay. They are pretty and now I know a use I'll try it out.
So excited to get these planted! live in Chicago now (Florida native) and going to keep these indoors and make sure they stay healthy considering the environment. Thank you for shipping these out and taking care of me, considering their sizes. Great video and I'm so excited!!
Thanks for the video! Can’t wait to get mine in the mail. Your tomato live stream helped me, all 10 of my heirloom germinated and they’re looking good so far!
Yes they grow great in Florida. If your ground freezes, will have to grow in a pot and bring in doors for winter. But I don't think it freezes on the panhandle right?
I live in a cold state so i would have to grow this inside but i do want to get them in the future! I want to start growing plants that you wouldn't see in my area
Yes you would have to grow in a pot or dig up the rhizomes before your first frost. I just restocked rhizomes on my website today. I will have plants in a few weeks too.
Hey, do you know if these shampoo ginger plants can thrive in a greenhouse or Earthship? (An Earthship is a greenhouse-like house with natural energy and aquaponics-so cool!) This plant is so cool! Thanks 🌺💦🧴😁
So I was also wondering if you can make body soap & add that to it. Thank you so much for all this info & I would definitely use this in my hair! Love it!
Its ok. The shampoo ginger liquid is an ingredient in many skin and hair products. I personally don't have a recipe. I just make a hair mask or add some into my existing conditioner.
I have to be bring it indoors during winter but my shampoo ginger isn't growing so fatr until now but I clearly need to change their situation. Mine came from Etsy but with no instructions. Im going to purchase new pots and soil and see if they do better in the shade. Thank you.
I am in zone 9b texas gulf coast area. I planted 7 rhizomes in a large pot. It is now the end of June. The plants are over 1 ft tall and i believe they need to be transplanted in the ground. When can i transplant in to the garden? And will they survive winter if i do so? Appreciate your advice. TYIA
Hi, I live in California and I planted several of these, they grew and went dormant during the winter season, not all went dormant though, I was wondering how soon am I gonna see the flowers or inflorescence come out? Right now I have new ones coming out and I’m so excited to see them sprout and hopefully some shampoo ginger soon.
Question, i'm in florida and these are growing wild in our yard, how do I go about increasing how many are growing? I dont want to damage them. do I just dig up one or two separate and replant them where they are?
I wish I knew about your shop earlier. I live in Apopka, Florida. And I have five of these shampoo gingers. It's my first time trying this. How long doesn't it take? I bought rhizomes around July this year.
It will sprout and start flowering once the rhizome network under ground has grown big enough. Keep them warm over the winter and start fertilizing in spring when you see new sprouts.
Great video!!! Just received mine in the mail and ready to plant. Quick question when planting... should the whole bulb be buried or should I leave some poking out?
Looks like they're in the shade, does it need some sun or just plant in shady area. I'm in Houston Tx I think it's zone 9 also. Also can you just cover in winter with winter blankets?
They grow best in a spot with bright morning sun and afternoon shade. If they constantly get full sun, the leaves turn yellow and burn. If your ground freezes, or its snows, it can kill the rhizome. I'm not familiar with putting blankets down, so not sure if that will be enough to protect the rhizomes in the ground.
@Jerra I wanted to ask a question. I got a ginger root several months ago and it was broken. I buried both parts. Now it appears I have 5 or 6 different plants. How do I split them up?
I just received my rhizome from you today. It wasn’t wrapped in a damp paper towel inside the bag, will it be okay? It looked fine but want to be sure. Also, I planted it in full shade, will it survive and thrive with no sun? My memory told me full shade. I’m in zone 10A.
I am currently out of stock and growing a new batch. It is going to be a few weeks before they are ready. If you want to be the first to know, please add your email to my email group here: mailchi.mp/f696838283c9/untitled-page
Mine are in the green stage. I don’t know if they’ll turn red before it gets cold or not. I’m going to bring it inside if I can lift it. It’s 6’ tall & in a huge pot. I’m in TN. It has 7 cones I can squeeze & liquid comes out.
I’m in zone 8b - right at the Florida line - the ones i put in the ground can I pull them up during winter and pot them at that time? I planted them earlier this week and didn’t want to disturb it but i guess i should since i want to see it flower eventually
I am sold out but will have more in a few weeks. I alert everyone in my email group first so please join if you want to get a restock alert: mailchi.mp/f696838283c9/untitled-page
I am monitoring temperatures and if its expected to be below 40F, I add a heat pack. Or wait to place an order in spring. I will have a lot more in spring.
Hello from the Florida panhandle, zone 8b/9a! I planted this for the first time this year in a shady spot next to my house. The plant itself has grown huge and lush but no sign of flowers or pine ones yet. I’m wondering if the spot is too shaded. Do you have any advice for this? I planted it in a pot early in the spring and once it sprouted I transplanted it around May. We had a pretty cold spring up here this year.
I have an area with poor drainage during heavy rains but will eventually drain. It's in the shade of a huge oak tree. During the summer this area does dry . I'm in zone 9 in Texas. Would this area be ok to transplant my shampoo ginger?
Potentially. They like a period of dryness when they are dormant for the winter, followed by a period of lots of rain which occurs for me during the summer here in Florida. They are in their active growing stage during the summer so the extra water helps. My patch does get afternoon shade.
I live in Central Florida. I planted my plant in a pot because the seller never sent me instructions. It's in partial sun but still seems like it wants more shade. So far it's grown nothing but leaves and this is the first year. Do you think if I put it in the ground in a more shady spot that it will do better?
If it looks kind of yellow, then it needs more shade. Mine are in a spot with bright morning sun and full afternoon shade. Since you are in FL, you can safely plant it in the ground. I'm in Orlando FL, mine flourish in our regular native sandy soil.
I get asked this question every day LOL I am currently out of stock and am growing out a new batch. It is winter time and the plants are dormant so growing very slowly. I estimate I will have more in stock in about 2-3 months. Please add your email to my email group if you want to get a restock notice. They will sell out as soon as I send that email. I just ordered some off of Amazon, found out they were coming from China 🙄 . I asked for my money back. I just heard you're in zone 9! Me too! I'm in the central valley California. I don't do ebay. Anyway to do Paypal?
I sell shampoo ginger on my website www.jerrasgarden.com However, I am sold out right now. I'm currently growing a new batch but they wont be ready for a few months.
I would not put it in the shower, or at least where it will get wet all the time. Its best to let the soil dry out in between watering. Its ready to be transplanted once the root system takes over the whole pot.

To hear you can add it to your skin answered my question I earlier had before watching this video I meant to add.

They might come out this year but most likely it will be next year before they start
I’m in Arkansas and plan on potting mine, when would be a good time to order?
You can order now, plant in a pot, and make sure you bring it inside once temps get below 60F.

I have these growing on our property. We are in zone 8b.

I actually think the pinecones that are more on the greener side, have more liquid and stronger scent than the full red ones. Give them a squeeze :)
How old was the plant when it began growing cones and how big is your pot?

Does it like more neutral ph for the soil?

Hi. I live in the UK zone 9b with a winter temp between -1.1c --3.9c. Will that plant live here?
If your ground freezes or you get snow, then no it will not survive if planted outside.

Hello Jerras garden.
I want to grow these in the Netherlands. Is that possible?
Can you propagate from a cutting, not a rhizome?
No it has to be from a root piece
I live in Central Florida. I planted my plant in a pot because the seller never sent me instructions. It's in partial sun but still seems like it wants more shade. So far it's grown nothing but leaves and this is the first year. Do you think if I put it in the ground in a more shady spot that it will do better?

How do you germinate the seeds?
Shampoo Ginger doesn't propagate by seeds, it propagates by rhizome cuttings just like culinary type of ginger.

How long does the "shampoo" last in a container? If I harvest a bunch of it can I leave it in the shower for months and it not spoil.
I would not put it in the shower, or at least where it will get wet all the time. Its best to let the soil dry out in between watering. Its ready to be transplanted once the root system takes over the whole pot.
