  • Lego Anamorphic Clock Kinetic Sculpture
    An example of anamorphosis is where a distorted image is drawn on paper and looks 3D when viewed from a certain angle. More generally, anamorphic art requires the viewer to use a specific vantage point to reconstitute and properly view an image or sculpture. A kinetic sculpture relies on movement to achieve a desired visual effect. I’ve combined both of these ideas to create a mechanical timepiece using Lego.
    Uses a minimalistic frame and 147 gears driven from a single motor.
    Every two seconds, 6 hands are used to represent time on an analogue clock face. 2 hands for hours (the shortest hands when viewed correctly), 2 hands for minutes (longer grey tipped hands) and 2 hands for seconds (longest red tipped hands). They pause for a brief moment in the correct spot to indicate the current time, then scramble and pause again 2 seconds later in the correct position to show the updated time.
    An abridged version of how it works is explained in the video, but in more detail, to achieve this visual effect:
    Every 2 seconds, the clockwise second hand has to travel 1 + 1/30th of a turn to pause in the next correct spot around the clock face
    The anticlockwise second hand must travel 29/30ths of a turn to pause in that same spot
    In one minute, the time is shown 30 times
    Do the math and the clockwise hand turns at 31rpm (1 1/30 x 30) and the anticlockwise hand turns at 29rpm (29/30 x 30)
    Both differential casings that the hands revolve around turn once clockwise to ensure the hands extend and pause in the correct spot
    We can apply similar math to calculate the rotation of the minute hands
    The minute hand on a normal clock takes one hour to do one rotation of the clock face
    This machine will represent the time 1800 times in one hour
    Therefore the minute hands will need to turn at 1801 turns per hour clockwise and 1799 turns per hour anticlockwise (1 1/1800th turns clockwise and 1799/1800ths of a turn anticlockwise every two seconds)
    The differential casings that cause the hands to peak in a certain spot will turn once per hour clockwise (1/1800th of a turn every two seconds)
    Similar math applies to the hour hand - 21601 turns clockwise and 21599 turns anticlockwise per 12 hours (1 1/21600th turns clockwise and 21599/21600ths of a turn anticlockwise every two seconds)
    The differential casings that cause the hands to peak in a certain spot will turn once per 12 hours clockwise (1/21600ths of a turn every two seconds)
    On paper, with a motor speed of 120rpm, that means we need the following gear ratios to achieve this effect:
    120:31, 120:29, 120:1, 7200:1801, 7200:1799, 7200:1, 86400:21601, 86400:21599, 86400:1
    But put more simply, all main hands are reduced 4:1 from the main input, then one turn is added or subtracted from the relevant hands over the relevant time period by use of differentials
    All gear ratios are accurately represented in the machine and ignoring wear and tear issues, noise and impracticality concerns, would indefinitely keep accurate time.
    The time can also be set as shown in the video. The minute adjustment will change the part of the rotation that the minute and hour hands peak. (The hour hand position needs to reflect the minute hand position.) It also adjusts the amount that these hands are through the current rotation to keep the timing of the hands pausing in sync with each other. The hour hand adjustment will adjust the hour hands only in a similar fashion.

      TECHNICally Possible I still get teased for trying to invent with Lego, by people who spend hours doing a jigsaw puzzle. At a restaurant they will ask my wife if I still have my Lego and roll their eyes. Thanks for giving me confidence and inspiration!:,,)

      +Block Leader This was an evolution of ideas over a really long time and has been redesigned from scratch more times than I care to think. Early versions looked absolutely nothing like this. I learned a lot about Lego and what can and can't be done from playing around with this...

    In May of 2009 I had an idea to make music with my LEGO Mindstorms NXT set. The idea was never fleshed out too far, and eventually I simply renamed the channel (NXTMusicianBassist) to its current name, my name (that's this channel), since I never uploaded any videos. I only went as far as arranging some music and programming a few musical phrases.
    I just came here to this video from checking out your channel after stumbling on your guitar video. I realized while watching the guitar video that you had made the ultimate form of what had come to my mind at the end of my 7th grade school year. While I had only thought of programming the set to sing with its own speakers, you have done so much more!
    To me, this is an inspiration. I've been planning to start creating content on RUclips soon (it'll be on a different channel than the one on which I'm now writing this comment, so this comment isn't an ad). Much of my content will be music related, and I've learned a lot more about music since those first ideas years ago, but I've gone in a direction away from robots doing the music. Still, seeing the idea come to life in your work is near and dear to me, and LEGO Technic is still a big interest of mine, being a mechanical engineering major, so you've earned a sub. I've already started on other RUclips projects with my girlfriend, and seeing such a familiar concept executed better than I was ever able to conceive is a huge morale boost.

      Thanks for the complements David, I'm glad I have helped inspire people's imagination - I myself got inspired to make this stuff after watching videos of Akiyuki's and seeing creations like the Cubestormer. I never really realised that there were so many possibilities with Lego nowadays. (I stopped playing with it when I was a kid). I got the idea for this particular project after I saw a video on the Lego Antikythera mechanism which made me realise that any gear ratios were possible with Lego through use of differentials. I am currently challenging myself with another mechanical project after a failed 9 month attempt at a better guitar bot. (Can't win 'em all... sorry subscribers). Anyway, good luck with your ventures in the new year too!

      I am working on something that I hope will come to fruition in the next couple of months (free time depending)... Don't want to say too much because the previous 2 projects I spent several months on before this one never worked out so I'm crossing my fingers for this third idea! (Which has also had some pretty major setbacks... I gotta start making easier stuff...)

      I'll get there one day! But first project was a more capable guitar bot which, the thing can be built from Lego, but the motors just don't have the power so I'd have to go with after market stepper motors and controllers which I don't really want to do. Second was a calculator which I still intend to finish one day but it's stupidly complex so I'll come back to that one. This current project was SUPPOSED TO BE my easier project that could be finished in a lot less time... HA!

      That is someting I have wanted to build for a pretty long time ^^ but first, I'd develop independently each key components : logic gates, binary to analogic converters & vice versa, encoding processes and all that sort of stuff ^^ That said, with all these components, It should'n be impossible to create a complete mechanical computer Yeah !
      If this clock was supposed to be your "Easy" project, I cannot imagine how complex your other could be XD
      Besides this, I realy enjoy conversing with you ^^ & can't wait to see your long gone calculator !

      Oh no, this clock wasn't meant to be the easy project! - I may have worded that poorly. This thing was years in the making (working on and off and starting over many times). The project I'm working on now is kinda a music video... (hard to explain) and was MEANT to be an easier in-between project... Taking forever too. One day I hope to finish the calculator... You might be waiting a while to see it though! - if it ever gets completed at all... I normally don't say much about what I'm working on because it normally takes forever to come to fruition (if it gets finished at all), but hey... I've designed a number of components, but trying to make them all work together... is a pretty big ask...

    What do you think about putting some different colors leds at the end of each pointer, and light up the numbers indicators with some light. Then when your turn the room's light off, it'll have a nice glowing look. Unfortunately we'll not be able to see the whole mechanics, but it we'll give us a preety nice looking without this large structure at the front view. :D

      +shadow222e Thanks shadow, it's not too bad to calibrate once it's built, you can align the hands at 12:00:00 without too much trouble. Huge amount of trial and error to get it made and running though... Let's just say, it took a really really long time :P

      +Myko Link I've got a bit of a description of the maths if you click 'show more' under the description. The gear ratios are all worked out mathematically, it's just making it all fit together and line up that's the hard part!

      +Uncannysn Unfortunately I pull apart all my models after I've built them so I can make something else - so I don't actually have it anymore to video. I do have some close up photos that I took for myself, but I might be able to look into a way of sharing them with people who want them. It's probably not the easiest thing to make, even with the photos though...
