    I have a 2009 Joey, with Shimano Nexus 8 speed enclosed hub gear, front disc brake, rear rack and Ortlieb quick detach panniers, sks mudguards, shimano spd pedals, Brookes Flyer (sprung saddle). It works well as an alternative to my Brompton, and the Brookes sprung saddle has made the bike much more comfortable, with less jarring ride. Tyres are Schwalbe Kojak 1.50x24, pumped up to max 85psi, which roll well, are much lighter than standard, and add to the ride comfort and speed. Another option is the Moulton,(my 11 speed Alfine hub gear SST) which breaks in two, and goes in its sleeves (or dedicated transport backpack) .... its the Jag xj6 of bikes, in its various forms, and the Joey is the old Volvo 244; Brompton is old Fiat 500. Horses for courses, but all can be made to work to various levels, over various distances I think. Much more useful these days than my bespoke older racing cycles.

    Nice bit of Jethro Tull! As for the bike. I wasn't sold on it to be honest. It looks a hell of a lot of faff to strip it down and fold it and then it looks very cumbersome compared to a Brompton. Not that I'm in the market for a folding bike but its always interesting to see how these things work.

      Thanks. They are not for everyone I admit. One thing I should have made clearer, is that the demo was for the 'First Fold', The 'Second Fold)- more spanner work- gets it smaller still. I can actually get it into a Brompton soft flight bag but it takes 1/2hr disassembly - ok for flying but not worth doing for a train ride.
      I do have a Brompton (see other videos!) that I use for touring, but the ride is not anywhere near as good.

      I took two of these to Cuba for 4 weeks of touring. They were great as it allowed us to easily take a bus when the going got too tough or the path to our next destination would have been boring riding. They rode great. Having both I can say that Airnimals and Bromptons serve different purposes. Get the Brompton if your trips are relatively short and you need to fold it regularly, say once or more a day. If you're riding longer distances and don't need to fold regularly, the Airnimal is the much better option. We folded them to get to and from Cuba and then twice during our stay. The larger wheels, better performance, greater luggage capabilities and more comfortable geometry was more than worth the additional effort required to fold them those few times.

    Hi, what is the folded size of the bicycle at 2:50 of the video? Is it easy to roll the bike on the rear rack? It seems to be excellent for touring and bikepacking instead of just short commutes to the train, supermarket etc cause of the hassle of folding/packing.

    That’s was very helpful as I’m in planning stage for a train/bike tour. I don’t think my train service would except a “bag” bike though but I will inquire. I would add bubble wrap as additional protection just in case. 3:29

      I would do more if flying, but on a train you can keep a better eye on it whilst in transit.

      They are a UK company. The fold is fiddly but it is like riding a regular bike. Glad you liked the vid.

    At first, I thought "what a faff"! But I definitely see the benefits of the Joey. Perfect for the not bike friendly uk trains.

      @krull57  2 года назад +2

      You are right, it is a faff. However, I get quite stressed taking a bike on a train, whether the booking process or the actual train bit, when there are other (non-booked) bikes that have taken the bike slots. This way means do not have to book at all. Also it allows you to chop and change your plans.
      I can just chance it, knowing I can pack it up as luggage if required.
      I have a foreign trip coming up in summer. I will pack it down even further and get it in a suitcase for that.

    Hi. Nice bike! I just got one myself! What do you think of it so far? What mudguards and storage bag do you use?

    • @krull57
      @krull57  2 года назад

      Hi, I find they ride very well but the fold is a bit fiddly compared tonsay a Brompton. For me the main advantage is not having to book for train travel, which can be difficult to book.
      Hope you enjoy yours.
      The bag is by Carradice, I bought it from Airnimal with the bike.

    I have a 11 speed Joey(mountain bike gearing 20 gear inch low), a Jones H bar, Topeak MDX rear rack, dyno hub front wheel. I have loaded 25 kg total weight with 4 panniers, handle bar bag/harness system. Not really fast but it is a sturdy bike and climbs well. Have even used Traveller bike/trailer case on a tour though prefer not to due to width of road I use.

      Hi. They are Wellgo pedals. I have both spd and rat trap type with a common mount, so I can easily swap them about.

    Thank you for sharing the video, it looks like an interesting ride. I'm interested in your views on the kickstand. If you think it performs well, could you tell me the make and where is the best place to order one from. Many thanks

      Hi, glad you enjoyed it.
      The kickstand is the Hebie AX24, for 24" wheels. It works well enough and does not damage the frame. It fixes on the rear wheel axle and is easily removable.

      @@krull57 Hi. Is the kickstand strong enough to hold Joey up with all the gear you have on it?

      @@ukrytykrytyk8477 Hi
      The stand is by Hebie, the fixes on to the rear axle and is easily removeable. Yes is does support the luggage ok.

    I have just bought a 15yo Joey. Good bit of kit and a useful adjunct to my 3 Bromptons. I would call it a bike that folds rather than a folding bike. When I need to fold on trains etc it will still be the Brommies as the Joey is a faff. Ok part fold for cars but hey.....I don't drive. My model has brake blocks so it looks like having to release those to get the front wheel off as I cannot just slip it out of a disc or am I missing something? Having said all that it is superbly designed and engineered.....here in England, is super light and has 24" wheels. The Sram hub is now discontinued so check eBay for spares whilst they are on offer.....

    Hello, nice video and cool set-up.. wonder if you would share your set-up .e.g. panniers, racks, mounts, bike bags used etc..etc.. I am about to drop some cash on a second-hand one and would like to kit it up like you have (+ drop bars)

    • @krull57
      @krull57  5 месяцев назад

      Hi . Thanks.
      Racks are all from Airnimal, specific to the bike.
      Panniers and bar bag are all Ortleib. Small rear panniers and small bar bag.
      TBH, I have now swapped the forks to suspension type and use Vaude bike packing kit so that it can used as a transportable gravel bike.

    Hi, thanks for sharing this video. I would like to hear your views about the back rack and if still easy to wheel the bike around with the rack.

    • @krull57
      @krull57  2 года назад

      Hi, Thanks for watching. The rack came with the bike from Airnimal. It works well enough and if removed, it will disassemble flat. TBH I have not had to wheel it about, so can't comment on that aspect - usually it goes straight in the bag. Next time I fold it up, will have a go and let you know.
