    Hello Mr. Jackson. I am an OLD guy singer. I have always struggled to sing, with any real quantity, quality, or consistency. I have a decent voice, but after just a few minutes (and sometimes LESS) of me "singing," I start to cough. I am NOT a smoker. I realize now, that this is almost certainly because I sing, about 100%, from my throat. I have heard for years, about using the diaphragm, but it just never seemed to work for me. After watching your videos, especially THIS video, I now feel like there is HOPE, for me. I DID get light-headed, doing the breathing exercises, but hey, you gotta start SOMEWHERE! Thank you for presenting things the way you do, so even an old FART like me, can learn from it...

      I wonder if it is a throat chakra issue. We all have restrictions in one chakra or another, often all of them lol. I think these breathing exercises help with balancing the energy flow in our bodies as well. Singing is literally a form of meditation when done right.

      @@davidhick4303well said man. I have many issues with my throat due to similar things and emotional trauma etc. I try to keep it physical based on here as much as I can though as people complain at me for even giving good clear instruction. If I start pulling the energy card out people will really start bitching haha. But, love it 😊

    Never really feel compelled to write comments on videos but I would like to give you a huge thank you. I am a drummer/lead singer in a cover band and was really struggling with losing my voice during shows and longer practices. I’ve binged and rewatched your videos over the past month and have made more progress over that time than I have in the past two years singing. It’s insane that this quality of content is free. You deserve all the success. I would take lessons if I could afford it. From one obsessive (on the spectrum) person to another, thank you again for all your help and openness to talk about and explain these techniques in a way that’s easy to understand.

    I recently learned to sing only because of this method. And once you understand how this really should be done, your voice opens and stays healthy. So If you can't sing a higher note for example, it's very important NOT to use strength but to relax. At first the note is quite silent but after weeks of practice it starts to sound louder etc. but only because you're relaxed and can control the note.

    I usually don't comment much on videos but this has been so impactful that I just cant help but thank you from the bottom of my heart. (And prolly patreon soon)
    I've worked with my voice for the longest time for a bunch of different reasons. Voice acting, singing, changing my everday voice.
    But especially while singing i was always extremely prone to straining/tensing up really hard when going even slightly out of my speaking range. Usually more extreme-ish techniques like belt left me coughing after 20 minutes of practice. (Somehow, I never got hoarse) And had a huge 4 note hole in my range where my bridge was.
    I didn't know for the longest time wtf was actually wrong till I stumbled on ur video about singing in mix/across your bridge. Where you show how beneficial it is to instead back off and stop struggling.
    Now adding proper breathing from this one, made me seemingly magically able to sing 3-4 notes higher, without even a hint of struggle.
    It feels almost weird singing without actually feeling some kind of muscles working constantly :O
    Thanks so much again, you're awesome!

    Great video. One warm up that ended up unlocking so much resonance for me was running scales on a vvvvv sound letting minimal air through. The added resistance and placement changed so much for me and now I go around telling everyone who mentions singing about it. It also helps keep those more intense moments dampened if you’re in an enclosed space but wanna go big.

    It's funny how only when I got into daily breathworks I really started learning how to sing. I've always wanted to internalise and make it a passive habit to breath with my belly. Now it's been a very successful year of progressive bettering of my breath, therefore vocal control. I suggest daily routines for breathworks (check out Breathe With Sandy) followed by meditation (where we analyse the breath and connect even deeper) to every aspiring vocalist, paired with daily vocal warmups found (here is a great place, and I also visit Jeff Rolka's channel) - but all this together is a set up for success, and you'll notice improvements almost after a week, plus the constant connection and sometimes intentional desire to track your breath from your diaphragm throughout the day, until eventually you'll opt out for it automatically cause of the practice you continue on carrying out. 🙏 Thank you for a phenomenal share brother 🙌❤

    • @SterlingRJackson
      @SterlingRJackson  6 дней назад +1

      Yeah man! It’s not easy to teach people to be aware and learn to breathe correctly even if it’s just for singing. I trained it so much that I breathe from the diaphragm all of the time now. There’s many ways to practice but it requires one to becoming consistently aware of what and how they’re doing it. I’m continuing to get into breath work now for other benefits too. 😊

      @@SterlingRJackson you're a warrior brother! Keep smashing it. It's fascinating 🙏 thank you once again Sterling

    Thanks for your teaching,I love your style. I am wanting to learn to sing properly using the proper breathing etc and this was a great video. Funny coincidence that I just noticed the other day that I could have better air flow while singing with my head down rather than up. I have also noticed for a while now that if I’m singing just sound rather than words I have a more natural sound and my voice seems to flow better. As soon as I try to sing words there tends to be more restriction and even drastically reduces my range. Do you have anything to mention regarding that?

    Thanks Sterling can I ask how much air you breathe in? Is it a quick gasp or do you feel full? Something I have noticed lately is that if I breathe out all my air then try to sing I immediately relieve all my tension. It's like the tiny amount of air that shoots in just before I phonate is more than enough to sing any phrase followed by short gasps to top up. I think all these lessons/videos showing you to take a deep belly breath give the wrong impression of how much Air to take in which actually causes immediate constriction

    • @SterlingRJackson
      @SterlingRJackson  9 дней назад +1

      The constriction your mentioning sounds like too much air or too much air still in the upper chest. You’re correct in that we don’t need that much air to sing. So, no, never taking in big amounts of air necessarily. Whatever is comfortable and making sure it’s comfortably into the diaphragm. Hope that helps a little. It’s all a learning process

      You don’t need that much air to sing and breathing from the diaphragm doesn’t really make a sound vs breathing in from the upper chest. Try it out and notice the difference. I big chest breath sounds intense, belly breaths do not.
