    : : : CNC cutting - The Neck : : :
    Finally, a recognizable, tangible outline of the Red Special! And I can pick it up and hold it! This has been a long time coming.
    While there will, no doubt, be people who feel the only way to build this guitar is by hand... I suggest that my journey; hunting down materials, constructing blockboard, practicing some woodworking stills whilst also taming the unruly beast of a machine that is CNC, is no less perilous, rewarding, or fulfilling.
    Big thanks to Doug Short for our seemingly unending collaboration on this build. Check out his build and lots more info here: dsgb.net

    The original neck was from an old fireplace

    Do you still have the plans for the neck and body? I’m trying to prepare for a project in my wood tech class and build one for myself.

    Are you going to sell these guitar parts as kits?

    Nice work ! Bottom line is if Brian had this technology available to him when he wanted to make his guitar he would have utilised it. "Hand built" really means no power tools at all anyway. A CNC system is just an extension of traditional power tools using jigs. (I used to feel uneasy about CNC machines, but I've done a 180 degree turn around now) Your CNC machine looks huge. What's the cutting area ? Also why don't people do a single pass instead of deep cuts then the fine ones ?

      I agree with you about hand built vs CNC. I'm actually renting time on a community 5ft x 10ft Shopbot. As for pass depths, it has to do with the material you're cutting, the diameter of the cutter, and the machine, I suppose. I'm still learning what is best/most efficient, but there are system defaults, which you can modify, but there are conventions like never cutting deeper than twice the diameter of the cutter, etc.

    How long did it take you to do it man?

    • @Lukeyourself

      Well, VERY off and on, it took me 2 years. Most of that time I wasn't working on it, or I was hunting for parts, but it is one hell of a project!

    Looking forward to seeing this completed. I built a guitar inspired by the RS last year, and hope you enjoy your end product as much as I do mine: ruclips.net/video/abKjgeqmW08/видео.html Plays like a dream! Guessing the vibrato system is next for you?

      @@Lukeyourself I'm amazed really by your job! Are you selling the step/cad files?

    • @Lukeyourself
      @Lukeyourself  4 года назад +1

      @@molkojam Thank you! I'm not personally selling anything, but there are plans available on the Red Special Library forum. My guitar deviates from them a bit, but mostly just to fit the hardware I used... as there are lots of variances in hardware.

      @Guitar Guy I did not create them myself. There are a couple versions out there, but I found I still need to modify them to fit the parts I used. I made my own bridge and hodgepodged a number of parts together, and I found one size plans does not fit all. So if you have experience modifying plans, or have the still to work around them, I think you could do the same as me.

      @Guitar Guy There are decent machines out there for not a ton of money. I'm not the most knowledgeable about this, but you can check out places like OpenBuildsPartsStore or CNC4Newbie. As for the plans, I modified a set made by a friend of mine, but there are a few available online. Red Special Library has a good set, but be prepared to need to either modify them to fit your chosen hardware, or buy all their parts to fit.

    It bothers me ; all these uber-positive images the NTA try to at attach to their "teachers. It's funny because when we were young, high spirited students at University, we used to laugh at the Education Faculty and justifiably so - easiest degree on campus and all that. The truth turns out to be more horrible than our games and humour. I have put two children through the system that the NTA touts as noble and honourable because of their teachers. New Parents - " for God's sake take care; know your Child's teacher:.. if they don't measure up, or your stomach doesn't feel right, a benevolent force is telling you what to do; i.e. - Get your child away from that teacher. I can't go into detail here - Just an experienced Loving Father trying to help other Parents
