The Urgent Political Grime Punk of BOB VYLAN

- Let's talk about the UK musical duo Bob Vylan and why I love their unapologetically militant album The Price of Life. Sometimes, politics is a matter of life and death, with all the unsubtlety that implies.

lol, lmao even: somehow in editing, I clipped out a bit of my sentence at the 11:14 mark. You can probably figure it out from context but my original sentence is preserved in the closed caption. I've been making videos for years now, you'd think I'd stop making silly mistakes
The British are always a step ahead with the punk sounds, I think we'll see this kind of sound blow up everywhere and hopefully originators like Bob Vylan will get the respect they deserve. Grime Punk is a great combination.
It's a surreal experience watching someone explain the meaning behind lyrics that are so inescapably obvious to anyone who understands the first thing about what's going on in the world. Not because it's a pointless thing to do, but precisely because most people actually do need it explained to understand it.
The fundaments of leftism are so simple as to be obvious when you think about nearly any issue, but most people have been conditioned out of understanding them with thought terminating cliches like the ones TDD often describes from his time as a cop. The same ones I heard and believed for much of my life, lest anyone get the impression I think I'm above it.
They are every bit as good live as you'd imagine :) Instead of pissing about with obligatory encores he jumped of the stage to have the crack with the crowd, shake hands, take selfies. Legends. That was the Belfast gig and when they said they spent the day doing the black taxi Troubles tours with the support band to see the history of the place first hand I could well believe them.
WE FUCKING LIVE HEEEEEEERRRRRRE. Bob is absolutely elite
Also highly recommend the Work of Souls Glo if you resonated with this album
Soul Glo whippppps
@@ThatDangDad Definitely check out Chat Pile. Their song on homelessness is so crushingly honest. Love the content amigo🖤
Bob is an important voice for the UK. I don't can't exactly relate to the "black struggle" being a poor white dude, but boy does Bob capture the poor anger of modern Britain. I love the rawness and directness of the lyrics, and I wholeheartedly agree with his opinions on Boris...
I'm sorry, I had to stop your video halfway through to go listen to the album myself. You did a great job promoting them. This really is outstanding music. I promise to finish the video after the album!
they don't call me The Tastemaker for nothin'!
i finished the video, then went and listened to them.
@@GillamtheGreatest I clicked on this channel after having subbed a year or so ago and was pleasantly surprised to find he'd done this review of an album by one of my favourite bands!

You know, as an old hardcore and punk kid who only recently got more into rap music (aside from the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy, etc.) this is probably the perfect kind of music for me. Musically, lyrically and the flow.
The only good cop is an ex cop

That Elvis line is from a Public Enemy song, FYI.
ha, really? Well, they used that reference to great effect on me then lol
@@ThatDangDad It plays out in a slightly altered way after the first few words, but it's a call back to a bar in Fight the Power that is prettttty effective. Saw them supporting Amyl. Blunt and rousing

Thank fuck someone with some kind of a platform is talking about Bob Vylan, the most fresh, interesting and powerful punk music coming out of the UK alternative scene right now. Price of Life is in my opinion the greatest album released this year, deserves all the attention in the world.
SUNDAY!!! Florida REALLY needs the Bobs...❤
They were so fucking good 👍 the chats or bob Vylans show probably had my favorite energy
@@bigboichoi0073 Facts.. Both bands are really the reason I attended this year...
Fantastic video and I’ll now be checking this group out because of you! Gotta support my fellow East Londoners! Thank you for the shout out at the end 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Love Bob Vylan and it's great to see them get the love they deserve.
We first became aware of Bob from a Facebook advert for, We Live Here, we saw the Crass t-shirt, clicked on and everyone went mad for it, clever DIY marketing, if you get a chance, see them in a small venue, intense gigs ☠
I really think this was a very good and different look at Bob vylan and the price of life album and there is way to much for me to unpack about what I like about this video and how it does an incredible job of highlighting the lyrics and the meaning of the album. I was lucky enough to see Bobby on the street on my way to the venue that they would play and he was kind enough to allow me to say hello and was really very nice and after they played one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to bobby and Bobbie gave people the opportunity to quickly say hi and get a photo or just ask a few things this is what makes these guys special. They have everything you could want. Good music created by talented musicians, powerful, punchy and witty lyrics, mixed with an incredible stage show which exudes charisma. To anyone who reads this if you get a chance to see bob vylan live expect an incredible show with incredible energy that you won’t forget in a hurry it was worth every single penny to see live. So thanks to them and thanks to that dang dad for the video. 1 thumbs up from me.
Seeing this video in my sub box is so cool. I'm actually friends with one of the guys family member so I'm ALWAYS shouting out Bob Vylan to my friends
hell yeah
As a Brit living in a 'sink' estate, it's interesting hearing your take on this band's music and the politics and history surrounding it - you're not too far off, to be fair! Right on.
Thank you for doing this piece on Bob Vylan. May I also recommend H09909 here in the states for more punk/hip hop goodness
You're a lovely thinker and talker, the world needs more folk like you. Subscribed!
the first time I heard them was when they opened a show for amyl and the sniffers shit goes hard I immediately knew I had to listen more, best possible introduction to such good art
and they played the day after the queen died, you can imagine the crowd
haha yesssss
Left at the first sample to go listen to then buy both their albums, then a bunch of live performances. I'm in love. This is exactly what i needed right now. It's funny, i was into punk as a teenager, and i saw plenty of the issues with US society and foreign policy at the time, in the Bush era. I had enough awareness to scratch the surface of all the reasons i had to be angry, but mostly i was just angry at all the things teenagers get angry at. I was so damn blissfully ignorant, in retrospect.
I drifted away from much punk over the years. But now my Scottish indie rock and stuff can't speak to what i'm feeling most of the time. The helpless anger; the hopeless, blinding rage. So i've been getting back into punk and into metal, which was never much my thing, and more of the angrier hip hop. These two albums speak to me so perfectly. More even than the Death Grips or Zeal & Ardor or Red Fang i've been listening to.
So i just had to come back and finish the video and say thanks and do a engagement for that.
I didn't go straight to tring to find the band until after the video essay. For that Pandora rewarded me with "lynch your leaders". A track that is so extremely anti-hierarchy Pandora wouldn't put up the lyrics. Thank I needed this band in my life right now
heh enjoy!! :)
You touched on a sentiment I don't think I realized has affected my thoughts on some media. I'm tired of too much subtlety given the state of the world right now. Definitely will check out, thanks for this!
Proactivity and prevention are un-American. We "treat" symptoms and blame victims, here.
"We live in unsubtle times" YEAH. such a good point. and so many works that are so clearly anti capitalism like squid game STLL get misinterpreted.
I loved We Live Here and didn't even know this one existed! Great analysis.
If you enjoyed listening these 2 albums you HAVE to go see them live. Bobby's speeches between songs match the messages of the songs. Their biggest show to date was Burn Britannia last year which saw the venue decorated with union flags with slogans graffitied on to them
Really looking forward to seeing them play at my local festival here on the UK. Big stage and thousands in the audience. However i really hope they also play in the much smaller punk venue we have on the fringe of the festival. That would/will be fun.
DANG Daddy!!! Holy!!! Wow! I should have known Daddy was a Child of the Korn!
(I shouldn't comment when I've been drinking, but Nephew Foreign said it was okay!) Speaking of which, there was something I wanted to say, but it's gone. You know I love your work. I've heard of this duo, but not their work. Thanks for this rabbit hole! Might say more when I'm sober. Heart Emoji!
Love the vibes of these tracks, definitely checking them out💖
The "Elvis was a hero to most" line hit even harder when it came out. Elvis and John Wayne were still very much in the public discourse, and the "Elvis is still alive" conspiracies were very popular. ruclips.net/video/ovrkVvlZWdE/видео.html
just finished The Price of Life and holy shit what an atom bomb of a record. thank you for recommending these fellas TDD, this shit rules
Loved the video, and definitely checking out Bob Vylan!
Thank you for introducing me to them!
I love these guys, they're so underrated
Ooooo! I’m excited to check these guys out!
Daaaayum, that MLK line… jeebus… no lies tho. Fuuuuuuu
just stumbled on your channel and enjoying a late night binge when i see you’ve reviewed one of my fave duos!!! i was introduced to bob vylan when they opened for amyl and the sniffers in 2022. they bring the pure energy and talent to the stage in real life just as they show it through the album. it was fun, engaging and different as they started the set with a metal meditation. they encouraged everyone in the crowd to stretch and breathe before we all dance/mosh. nyc was much more receptive to this intro than boston. boston bros are so annoying like come on dude just get into it. i’m from boston🙄 also?! happened to see them the week the queen died and man that was a treat. loved their commentary.
I am way behind on content from my faves on RUclips, so I will get to this eventually, but I think it's great you're doing a piece on them.
Had a great time seeing them open up Amyl And The Sniffers a month ago. Their left leaning ideals come through in their music and their personality on stage, really awesome stuff.
Take That, the backing music is actually lifted from a well known electronic group called 808 State, the track is called Cubik. Its interesting to see people across the pond react to Bob and Bob and what's coming from the UK, as I think alot of stuff never makes it past our shores. 808 State were massive in the late 80's and 90's in the dance/rave scene in the UK, breaking out from the underground they actually appeared a few times on the well known main stream chart show Top of the Pops on the BBC. In a nutshell it shows the 2 Bobs influences are far beyond just the stereotypical Punk London scene.
great info! I know of 808 State but only because they were on the SPAWN soundtrack back in the day haha
@@ThatDangDad that's one of my all time favourite soundtracks...orbital, crystal method, filter, back when soundtracks were amazing.
I've been listening to Bob for a while!! I'm so hyped to hear more people are loving it!!! Hell ya!
Much love!❤
I was reminded of Public Enemy when he did the Elvis line. Since "'Elvis is a hero to most" a direct quote of Chuck D.
Hit with that MP-5 sound effect from Counter-strike right away.
Thank you, Phil.
Thank for this recommendation. Maybe you should do reviews of meaningful music from time to time.
Late to this, I love Bob Vylan. They're such a vital live band.
I think you'd like Kid Kapichi, they did a song with Bob Vylan called New England. They live in a similar space and I've been loving both their new album and Bob Vylan's.
pretty good. gonna listen to the album now. thanks :))
You should definitely get Here's What You Could Have Won by Kid Kapichi. It's their second album, it opens with a collab with Bob Vylan called New England that is NOT subtle in its criticisms of the British far right and their unwillingness to change. There's a track literally called Rob The Supermarket, another called 5 Days On (2 Days Off). There's a little acoustic number making fun of the UK governments glib attitude to Covid called Party At Number 10. Don't get excited, you're not invited! They are more poetic with the lyrics but they are not subtle with the themes and it's clear the direction. There's one called Cops & Robbers about the COP27s failures to deal with climate change. Smash The Gaff about the misery of the grind and submitting to capitalism. There's a beautiful homage to Ghost Town by The Specials on there as well. Honestly, give it a listen and DEFINITELY do an analysis like this on it!
i've been listening to chinaka hodge and watsky and aching for work that's even more direct about exactly how horrifying the manner with which the US handles everything. this is it. thank you for sharing this with us! time to go listen
Ohh man, new subscriber here, the algorithm showed me your latest vid yesterday and I've been making my way through your content. love it, keep it up, its unreal. I can relate a lot to your situation too - while i'm not an ex cop, i grew up with my dad and grandfather in the force, a brother in law cop, and as such i was always surrounded by them. But with left leaning political ideas as a kid that only got stronger as i aged, I've had a lot of the same thoughts and conversations that you've shared on your channel - though far less eloquently!
went on a huge bender last night diving into Bob Vylan and absolutely love them, revitalised my inner punk in such a fresh way. Lots of references and nods to a lot of the hip hop music that formed my early political ideas too. Thanks for sharing!
I have to say too, the intro/outro track is fucking amazing too - did you whip that up yourself? If so, is it/can you make it available somewhere?! its such a vibe, such a good atmo.
Yeah most of my title and chapter break music is stuff I throw together in Ableton Live. The title music from this video I somehow never saved to my Ableton folder and now I can't find it on my new computer. I'll have to track it down.
Hyphenated_ is a dope channel who deserves more subs!
Great video as always Phil. I'm so happy that you exposed me to this band, in my humble opinion it is "hella fuckin balls-to-the-wall awesome".
Grime and Punk fusion? Iiiinteresting.
I went from punk to political rap like flobots and immortal technique rtj and mf doom
Love Bob vylan .
Omg Bob Vylan is such a great name
YES Bob Vylan is AMAZING, also check out Kid Kapichi. You may have heard the collab with Bob Vylan, it's called New England. Very very political and I'm very lucky to call them friends
*pauses video, listens to album*
"It's good, and it's super short, so it didn't take my whole morning to listen to. I think people forget the virtue of short. Albums that clock like 45 mins tops and are more like 20 can be a godsend cause you can get through them and sit with them while making breakfast.
Also, that bar about Churchill in the river, banger.
Interesting sounding album for sure
Dang, you buy albums? that's so retro, i love it
only on Bandcamp fridays lol
This was great. Their sound and unapologetic tone reminds me a lot of Atari Teenage Riot, a group of equally unapologetic German anarchists who first formed to explicitly attack the neo Nazis and fascist rhetoric swirling around parts of Berlin at that time. Anything that reminds me of them or their energy is already great in my book, so I'll definitely have to check these guys out. Thanks for the head's up!
I think I just might check 'em out.
How do you always introduce me to new, fantastic music?
I don't know, I'm 39 so it's hard to figure out how ANYTHING i like is cool anymore
Well, now I have more music to check out.
Seriously, the unsubtlety is important and difficult, when we are living in a situation where right wingers can escalate without repercussions and we can't even poke them back without getting hell rained upon us, it is important that we don't lose sight of the full range of tactics which have been heavily involved in every successful change of system in history.
Great video! Also on the note of hard hitting, politically charged music (no pun intended), I would highly recommend checking out Denzel curry’s cover/rendition of bulls on parade; it’s the perfect cross between your interest RATM and hip hop!
that cover is on my workout mix :)
Just discovered them after they called out Seaford Mods. Then discovered you 🤘
the circle of life
I think maybe every video I've seen from you probably had at least a passing mention of something regarding mental health or some other issue regarding disability rights. I don't know if I can say the same about any other abled Leftist RUclipsr. You just might be the most anti-ableist abled (or at least, abled-presenting) Leftist on RUclips. I really appreciate that you use your privileged voice to amplify more marginalized voices like that. Please keep up the good work!
Well, I was really moved awhile back by Mel Baggs' essay on how you can locate a strain of Ableism in basically every other axis of oppression. It's like being Neo from the Matrix: once you take the pill, you can't help but see the underlying code infusing everything around you so even if I don't set out to make something About Disability™ it just kind of sneaks in a lot!
@@ThatDangDad It's been awhile since I've heard that name; I had to look them up, I had forgotten about them.
Um. Regarding Baggs, specifically, you may want to look into the controversy around them. There's a lot about their story that really doesn't add up, so you should treat anything they say with a grain of salt.
That said, a lot of the things they said do still hold up, and this is one of those things. Ableism is absolutely a part of every other system of oppression. You're right, it is a little like seeing the Matrix, and most people are too nervous and afraid to go down that rabbit hole.
Other very political UK acts you might like; Kid Kapichi (actually collaborated with BV on Fool Britannia), Akala, and if you want some more tuneful R&B, Lowkey (although his older stuff is still pretty hard).
Sad I miss their performance at riot fest
"Dankthany Dadtano here" But I see no melon
perhaps the Melon was inside all of us all along
Also, unsubtle is about right. Punk us part of their sound and it's never been very subtle
When a group of people are treated like cogs in the machine, its not a matter of if they will revolt but when and how often it takes to make the right changes. It’s an ongoing process.
This album beats meat
The first quote of lyrics is Public Enemy btw. I noticed their logo is a copy of PE, too. I just found this band and really caught my ear, i was a big PE fan late 80's early 90's., saw them twice, and i was one of 5 white Canadian dudes there. These guys are coming to Toronto soon, and i might have to go. We need some angry political fuck you music.
if you haven't heard Ashenspire yet, you really should.
It's metal. And explicitly political. You'll love it (if you like metal)
I COULD DO THIS ALL DAY LONG
SING A SONG, A PRETTY LITTLE SONG
BLAH BLAH, RAH RAH RAH
THAT'S ALRIGHT BUT I'D RATHER FIGHT
Reminds me of Dead Prez
As a Brit it's been pretty depressing spending 12 years watching the social murder of hundreds of thousands of people around me, but hey we got our own Rage, every cloud, or something?
"Hey Bob Vylan, what do you think we should do?"
Bob Vylan: *interrupted by an ad for hair dye because that's more important apparently.*
Thanks youtube.
it's a devil's bargain with RUclips because if I don't enable ads, they don't promote my video but when I do enable them, RUclips ruins all my punchlines.
Public enemy was trash talking Elvis in the 80"s. In fact the first line of Vylans song WAS from a public enemy song.
....'Fight the power', to be exact!
You know a brothers gotta eat right? You know a brothers gotta eat yea a brothers gotta EAT
Bobs Vylan
Sorry to burst your bubble but the "Elvis was a hero to most..." lyrics are not Bob Vylan original. They're lifted from Public Enemy's Fight The Power.
Don't get me wrong - I'm only watching this video because I fucking LOVE Bob Vylan and I'm certainly not accusing them of ripping anybody off but credit where credit's due. Surely I'm not the only person to have noticed this? Can't see anybody else pointing it out, though.
Yup. I'm old enough to remember When Chuck said that.
So a UK version of Body Count with the politics of Naplam Death?
Melon is uncharacteristically hairy today 🤔

Been into BV since We Live Here. Bought Price of Life the day it came out and was blown the fuck away. An absurdly good record.
And now I know what I’m buying next BandCamp Friday!
