- After 10 events, it’s finally here. This is what everything has been building towards all season. The World Title will be decided in a one-day, winner-take-all event. The top five men and top five women enter, and after 12 must-see heats, one male and female surfer will rise from the proving ground at Lower Trestles as this year’s undisputed World Champions.

I just looked at this and realized I never watched it live or in replays. Watched for a couple minutes. Now I see why I skipped it. I´m gonna click around and watch some more of the Backdoor Shootout heats, even though I may have seen them all. Ending the season at Trestles is a joke.

I'm not a fan of this format . Whoever came up with this idea should be fired.
There should be an overall World Champion. A person can win every ct event all year and lose to someone who is fifth. It doesn't add any validity other than hype. You should not get to win a world title for being the 5th best surfer all year .This could be The world Championships and these elites get to compete in their own event. But Carissa's Legacy gets robbed for not getting the credit in history like the others who did the same before her.

This format to decide world champ has to go. The world champ should be the most consistent surfer across all types of waves all year not the best surfer on one day on a beach break.
You are exactly right, they just had pumping J-Bay in REAL waves, no flicks and tricks on show there just pure surfing. I think the WSL needs a total reboot.
100% correct WSL is getting to commercial and too political. This format sucks, why work your ass off all year to be points leader when someone can squeak in the final five and win it in one day.

That’s not how it works in any sport, and the athletes like it, Steph said of all 8 titles, this one was the most memorable and fun.
If they continue this playoff format it would need another approach. Like a day between the brackets and the actual final. Go with a two week waiting period like the rest of the stops. And go to a real world class break please. There's plenty besides this little peak with little waves
GREAT EVENT and format , Steph showed any one in top 5 can win. Only negative was Kelly and Mick calling girls final and Rosie calling mens final.
Winning a world title by winning one contest is RIDICULOUS

Fail by wsl, fun novelty last year but I hope they learn this year. Why must surfing suffer for the sake of ratings & making women feel better about themselves.
This format sucks Carissa has more points overall but Steph who squeaked into the final five and had a good day, so now she’s world champ. This is nonsense, WSL I’m extremely disappointed. 👎🏻 Bring back the old format not this crap.
Great video stoked for Toledo. I like Conner and also Kelly in the booth but Conner is a natural for sure on the mic.

I like the format but the venue. Conditions did not help. We would all prefer to see it in better surf. Maybe push forward and surf in the Ment's?

Steph should be embarrassed to take the title she doesn’t deserve it. It’s not right. Work your ass off all year to be points leader and someone not even close can scoop the title is stupidity at its finest. Over 11k points difference.

The scoring is awful
Wouldn't you want to hold it in really good waves? Ethan , Kansas, and Jack never got waves. Trestles is magic. But you need waves.

Fierce and entertaining but the format is simply lame.
We need a new format where everyone line up and surf for hours two times a day.
Awarding surfers for different catergories:
best and biggest drop, barrel, performance ride, (OG and layback) snaps, (roundhouse and semi) cutbacks, (FS and BS) ollies, reverses, 540s, floaters, most waves caught, longest wave, etc...and lastly the overall winner.
More interesting and less overlooking the spectrum aspects of surfing.
Sorry but this idea is actually worse than what the WSL has done, didn’t think that was possible

WSL should adapt couple of ideas of the ATP (the Association of Tennis Professionals)
you have 4 Grand Slams in a year, which are the most prestigious tournouments, and they provide the most ranking points and proze money (2000 pts for winner).
Then you have 9 Masters, that offers 1000 pts to the winner, and then the 500 & 250 tournaments.
This system makes a winner of a tournament be a BIG thing,
and ofcourse, winnig more prestigious tournament is a bigger thing.
on top are the GranSlam.
then you have 2 additional things:
1) the Year End number 1 player- the one that achives the most ranking points in a calendaric year.
deserves a throphy to state his achivment! it means he earns more than anyone at the same year !!
2) the ATP Finals - which only the top 8 players participate. every game deseve its winner with ranking points, and the winner can earn 1500 pts.
which means only the top 8 can earn poits through this event.
In tennis, the points are neceassary to be qualify to enter an event, depends on how many ranking points you have.
These ideas will make us honor every surfer that wins an event.
Winning the Big events will have much more weight than winning the WSL finals ,
and winning the finals, in my opinion , not should be named "the world champion",
because every WSL event out of the big 9 is a "world champion" itself.
While watching "make or brake" by AppleTV I felt the surfers pain,
Thinking that all matters by them is the WSL Finals makes all of them but one (the winner) to dealt with difficult thoughts and feelings.
If the WSL will set a MULTIPLE GOALS for the surfers to achive,
more surfers will achive them in a calendaric year,
less will dealt with depression and so on...
and everyone will benefit:
- surfers
- fans
- WSL and sponsors (more branding, champions, bussiness stuff..)
A pro surfer that on the tour for 10 years, that wins tournaments, shouldn't feel BAD if he didn't win the WSL Finals,
because it didn't reflect on how great surfer he is.
I hope WSL will reconsider adapting a new ideas.
