  • First Phase Cut-Offs for Odisha Plus-3 Admissions Released; Ravenshaw University Sets Highest Bar.The Higher Education Department of Odisha has released the first cut-off list for undergraduate (Plus-3) admissions across 1,051 degree colleges in the state. Ravenshaw University continues to dominate with the highest cut-off rates across all four streams.Out of the 2,37,795 applicants, 1,78,976 students have been selected for the first phase of admissions, including 72,556 male, 1,06,414 female, and six transgender students.The break-down of selected students is as follows: 45,614 for Science, 1,09,854 for Arts, 17,156 for Commerce, 3,574 for Shastri, 2,626 for self-financing courses, and 152 for Law. The total sanctioned seat strength for this academic year is 2,74,331.
    Odisha Govt Plans Phase-Wise Liquor Ban.In a politically charged atmosphere, the newly-elected BJP government in Odisha is reportedly planning a phased approach to make the state liquor-free. This follows recent clarifications from the Information & Public Relations (I&PR) department, which refuted claims of a liquor ban from August 15.However, Nityananda Gond, the Minister of Social Security & Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, confirmed the government’s intentions to ban liquor in the state. Speaking on the International Day Against Drug Abuse, Gond said, “We cannot continue to encourage liquor sales out of fear of revenue loss. Society is suffering due to liquor addiction.”
    The School and Mass Education Department has issued a notification to recruit 4580 guest teachers to overcome the vacancies of teachers till permanent appointments are made to the post.
    During the 2024-25 academic session, retired teachers will manage the teaching in schools where there are vacancies of teachers. As per reports, these guest teachers will be appointed till March 2025. The recruitment will be conducted by DEOs with the approval of Collectors.
    After the recruitment of the Trained Graduate Teachers (TGTs), the guest teachers will be used in other schools having shortage of teachers.
